Essentially looked at a mk4 round the corner today. It was absoloutely immaculate, gleaming and mint inside.
Decided to buy it and didn;t put a deposit down on it (luckily)
Got home and HPI'ed it and flashed up it was a CAT C, but been through a VIC check and back on the road for over a year.
The guy selling is doing on the behalf of a family friend and didn't know it had been written off and is trying to find out why it was.
In the meantime is there a way I can find out myself?
Really keen on the car as it is immaculate, lowish mileage, has full vw service history and is nearby as a pose to trudging the country to find one, but depending on the reason to the write off depends on whether going for it.

hi when was the last keeper change? Had a few cat c and d as trade in's where the customer had an accident and then bought the car back and carried on useing them hence still has the full history with it. If the last keeper change was before the date of the cat c claim it might have been something silly. However alwas wary of some one selling a car on behalf of a "friend" Always prefer to deal with the owner.

Guys come back to me and said the reason for the write off is due to someone damaging it in a carpark / coming back to find the damage.
Apparently it needed grill, bumper and bonnet replacing, but surely this would be a cat D then not a cat C?
Will ring Vosa and see what they say

He bought it, it's just leaked oil all over my road.
Luckily it's just a small crack on the sump and 5 mins with some silicon sealant seems to have stopped the worst of the flow.

Oooops

A small hic-up, it's a really nice tidy car.

vosa wont tell you much more about the car you do'nt already know, they wont have a clue what work has been done as the VIC check does not check the repair work done on the car they just check the car is what it says it is and that it's not a ringger.

I've just repaired my mk4 as it was a CAT C. My wife was in a small bump at a round about that damaged the front bumper, and drivers side wing and head light. Insurance wrote the car off!!
I bought it back, got it repaired and just carried on using it. Apparently, according to someone in the 'know' insurance companies have a target to hit with vehicles over 5yrs old to get them off the road!!

Oooops
it's just the way of the mk4 :lipsrsealed:

it won't take much to write off a mk4 now, when you look at how approved repaires manage to wind the costs up so damb effectivly a bumper can end up costing £1400 to be repaired ( god knows how they get away with it )
some cat c and cat d cars are nothing to be worried about but as a general rule of thum the younger it was and the less miles it had done when written off the less you want it

Repairs have just been authorised on mine, parts & labour come to around £1300. Even that was touch & go as to whether or not it would be written off.

Missed what happens to yours man, hope alls ok.
Swapping the sump tomorrow. Oh well. Also found the reason for no reversing lights possibly. Underneath the starter motor, connected to the gearbox is a smashed connector block.

I bought a van that was cat c, the only reason that it was cat c and not d was because you couldnt open the back boot door after a minor shunt. Very odd system seen as another cat c could have had the entire front end ripped off.

No idea why but vans are far more likely to be written off then cars. We get loads of them in and written off.
Come to think if it, could be something like the hire costs for a rental van? Or possibly the fact that van parts are very expensive!
