Title: Adjustable coilover springs .....help!
Post by: 67buggers on 13 September 2011, 19:54
I have just had a set of adjustable coilover springs fitted to my mk3 golf , they were advertised as being capable of lowering a golf up to 100mm, however......... My golf was already lowered 40mm......now with the adjusters set at there lowest setting my car is now higher than before, not by much though.......anybody got any ideas.

I called the company that supplied them and they said they have sold hundreds for golfs and the only complaint they had was that they were to low! Has any one out there ever fitted them that can send some pics of them on the car or point me in the right direction....... Before any one says ditch them and get proper coil overs or springs, I can't afford them!

Not sure if it makes a difference but they were advertised as being for a mk3 gti but I am told the struts are all the same length so should make no difference

shockers are all the same fitment etc (but gas on gti/vr models).. I hate to say but i can't see they would ever lower more than 50mm (and thats pushing it) as they compress the springs making the car lower but unless the springs are very soft at some point they won't compress anymore under the cars weight, plus your shockers will try and counteract some of the lowering   :undecided:

why didnt you buy coilovers?
so let me get this right. you keep your original springs in with them?
when i seen them on ebay i thought they replaced your coil springs.
or am i just being a douche and reading that wrong?

I didn't get coilovers cause I am skint and they would of cost me £150 plus fitting, these were 50 plus fitting. What I brought does replace the coil spring, they are smaller springs with adjusters at the bottom .

Oh right. You would have been better off saving for abit longer and getting coilys mate. I'm skint pretty much every week but I made my car buy saving.
Not having a pop at you mate as I no what its like but them things are sh!te mate.

Right....after a lot of phone calls I might be able to get my money back plus the money I spent on getting these fitted.....to do that I need to prove that my car is not 100 mm lower than a stock mk3 golf on 14" steel rims. Does any one out there have such a car they could maybe measure and send me a picture .....if no pics just the measurement is fine.

Thanks in advance!

I think you'll have trouble doing that, but the best of luck in getting it sorted :afro:

A phrase worth remembering is 'do it once, do it right'. I'm not sorting the suspension on my Mk4 until I can afford a decent set up, I know if I go down the cheap route again I'll regret it & end up swapping it for a better set up further down the line anyway

It's not so much a pic of the car, I could do with a pic of a tape measure against the arch showing the ride height. I have spoke to trading standards ant they're pretty confident I've been missold the springs. Basically unless I fit lower shocks it will never get lower.....this was never mentioned when I brought the springs, just "fit these and it'll lower your car 100mm"! .....yeah right!

I can't see that these are going to be sitting higher than a bog standard mk3 on balloon tyres. Those things have their own micro climate within their arch gaps.

Did you buy them off Ebay ?.If so you could start a not as described case and send them back but you would have to send them back by trackable means and you would only get your original purchase price back plus any original postage cost, not the return cost.

Has the seller said they would refund all your costs,if not,who did ?.

If it was an Ebay purchase i would be very surprised to hear that you get more than your original outlay.Even if you take someone to small claims and win it still does'nt mean you will get anything back.

They're wound down yeah? Not up?

yeah as bellend says you have wound them down havnt you?
had somebody before on here that was complaining about car being to high and they had wound the spring seat up not down.
is the adjustable spring seat thingy wound down to the bottom of the thread?

Post by: 67buggers on 15 September 2011, 07:23
Yes it's wound all the way down, I have tried it both ways to check, at one point it looked like a land rover!    Nice pics by the way.

Trading standards have said that the company who sold them are responsible for all costs incurred as they have missile me the item.....apparently it's covered by the sale of goods act 1970 summat! But yes brought off eBay. I'm gonna say all this to them and then try and do a deal with them today.

If you bought off Ebay you will be able to get your money back if you open a not as described case with Paypal but you will have to send them back at your own cost (as long as that is how you paid).

The seller may reimburse you for your p+p but i ca'nt see them paying anything else.If the one's you bought are from the seller mentioned earlier in this post i would take a look at their negs .

If negs do'nt bother them at all then what else can you do ?.

If you paid to have them fitted do you now have to pay again to get them removed ?.

Best advice i can give if seller does'nt play ball is get what you can back through Paypal and move on.

You could go down the small claims route but like i said earlier, even if you win there's no way you can force the seller to pay you.It is a relatively small amount and could end up costing you more in the long run than you stand to get back.

Trading standards will quote law etc all day long but putting it into practice is a very different matter.

My guess is that you will contact seller and they will ask you to return them for a refund. You would have to send them back by trackable method (signed for) at a cost of about £15-£20.Seller may or may not refund your return costs although a good seller would.

You never know, seller may refund your total costs but i would'nt hold your breath, their negs speak volumes. If the link on page 1 of this post is the exact seller you bought from then they do not have a legal returns policy on the actual listing so you may well be entitled to a full refund and they would have to arrange collection at their cost.Putting that into force is another thing entirely though !.

Guys thank you for all advice and pics ..... I think I'm gonna end up putting it down to experience and move on. Seems more hassle than it's worth. It'll cost me more to have them removed than the refund! Best start saving for the proper coil overs!

That's life i guess.I went through 3 complete sets of lowering springs and shocks of all denominations before i bought coilovers.

Fortunately i did'nt waste a packet as all 3 sets cost me under £80 (1 full set cost only £16 from 5 miles away.Seller put a silly title, poor description and "collect only",only 6 months old !!!).I sold them all on for a little more than i paid but i got to know my suspension pretty well

Very poor idea  cheaper coilovers are a better option.
