I've never tried rewiring stereos before, how do i fix this as I'm sick of hearing the same start of an album every morning lol!
-
Common problem Mate.....remove the Stereo and swap over the Red and Yellow wires. I.E. join Red wire from Stereo to Yellow wire in loom and Yellow wire from Stereo to Red wire from loom.
-
Cheers man! I'll get straight on it!
-
It would appear its not as simple as that! I have no yellow wires to swap and the stereo plugs straight into the original connectors  any other ideas? It's a jvc head unit if that's any help.
-
grab the yellow wire and the red wire, it theres no point to disconnect them at, then just cut them, swap them, twist and tape em up.

Guessing you've got an early mk2, basically they didn't have a switched live at the radio red was 12v+ constant and brown was earth but their was no switched. You'll have to either tap into the rear window heater switch which usually has a black or yellow wire (ignition feed) or take the black or yellow wire from the ignition switch harness.
A lot easier than it sounds ...

It's a mk3.
-
I'm guessing you meant and early MK3? which it is, 1992 lol  cheers for the help, I'll let you know as I go!
-
How would I go about 'tapping' into the wires? and where about's on the plugs (link is above) do I need to attach the wire? Cheers again!
-
Looking at your pic Mate you need to get a multimeter. In the brown connector on your stereo you will find one of the wires is permanent live and one is ignition live. you will need to cut these and swap them over and use connector blocks to rejoin when swapped.
-
Sorry for reasons unbeknown to me I thought you had a mk2 for a while there. Best thing to do it grab a voltmeter which allows you to identify whether the wire currently exists if not then look at making a new connection. You need to identify you constant and switched. Constant will be identified by looking for a 10v or higher voltage whilst the car is off. The switched will be identified by the same process but with the ignition on keep in mind the fact that constant will also be on at this point so be mindful.

plus this should help narrow it down http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/VW-Wiring.pdf

Thanks for all the help guys! Hopefully I'll get it sorted tomorrow

Cheers again guys

You don't need to start cutting wires mate. Just get something like this

Cheers bud! If I can find one for mine it would make my life so much easier! To be honest It did cross my mind that I could get one from Halfords but I really didn't want to part with £15 lol!

Cheers again guys
Put the red lead off your tester onto the wires in the Brown connector and the Black lead onto a good earthing point like the door hinge. When the needle moves up to the 10/12 volt mark then you have found your permanent live. Do the same again with the ignition on and a different wire should turn to 12 volt on the meter and this is the ignition live. You need both of these to keep a memory.
