Integral with the headlights.
Wired them up and they have no connection to the headlight wiring, straight to the original connector.
Problem I have is fast winking!
On emergency they work fine! Normal speed. But on their own they flash too fast.
Now I swapped the terminals around but to no effect!
Any ideas?
-
You have an indicator out somewhere, or not a sound connection. Check em all with hazards on mate.
-
Well they all work!
That's what is so confusing!
All 4 work on hazards
And all 4 work individually (6 actually if you include the side repeaters!)
Only thing I havent tried yet is the bulbs themselves. They are these small push in ones with a flat section and wires either side.
-
May be that the resistance is much higher on the new bulbs, therefore causing it to immitate a blown bulb. Have you tried it with the original bulb back in? :undecided:
-
i've just got some in-pro headlights and wired the indicators on these, i cut the proper indicator wiring and then used bullet connectors to the new lights, this is because i'm going to mod the original indicators to run as DLR's
-
I used terminal pins to fit into the existing plug connector and then taped around them.
What really confuses me is they work fine on hazards!
-
thats strange, i'll got and get a video of mine to show you how they work
-
Is there a different relay?
Indicator/Hazards?

Wont be able to view vid at work but can later at home so yes please.
-
None of them are LEDs are they?
-
The bulbs supplied with the headlights look like LED's but they are clear so cant use them as indicators.
I bought some orange bulbs from Halfords
-
The indicator wires were connected to the main headlight plug socket, so I cut them off that and wired them to the cars indicator wiring.
-
A couple of pics showing what you've done may be useful, I'm struggling to picture it in my head :undecided:
My guess would be the same as SeanL that the resistance is incorrect
-
the standard indicator wires, i cut them one at a time, then put connectors on, i didn't check what feed to the light was live or earth as they would still light up,
i tried to upload a video to youtube but it was failing, so now sending it to facebook, will link it soon

OK I will undo the 4 bolts holding the headlight and take some pics then!
later of course!
So do LED's have a higher resistance? (or lower)
-
im sure its lower as some LED's require resistors installed
-
Yes LED bulbs give a lower resistance fooling the car inti thinking you have a bulb gone and making your indicators flash rapid.
-
Bummer!
Anybody got any orange tint then?
-
I've got a couple of Orange indicators to come off the car soon
-
I've got the original orange indicators!
Need to paint these new LED bulbs by the look of things.
-
What bulbs are they Len? 12v 21W with offset pins? or are they the small 5w capless jobs?
-
Not got them here at work.
They are push in with offset - well you could say pins but its more like a wire on the outside that wedges into the socket.
They are clear with a circular cap.
The ones I bought in Halfords are like and orange tube.
-
Can you not just get some orange LED bulbs instead?
-
are you able to find an image online of the light you have

Surely eBay will what you're after, there's normally 1000's of various LED bulbs on there.
-
I have the same problem, i (kinda) fixed it, by wiring up the original indicators too, now i have two sets of indicators on the front.
I'll sort it out at some point...
-
Well I swapped the bulbs for the LED ones and they only work if round the right way!
But no change!
So then I swapped the wires.... still no change!
I really cannot see or think of what can be wrong!

Len sounds like those bulbs and led's your using are not drawing enough watts so you need to ad a resistor into the curcuit or ad a normal wattage bulb and tape it up and hide it.
-
Len, the trouble is, the front indicators use 21W bulbs. You've replaced them with orange capless 5W wedge bulbs from Halfords.
That's a 16W difference.
The hazards always flash the right speed, don't ask why, I don't know but they do.
You need 21W bulbs in the front. Have you put them in the sidelight holders?
They need to be bright enough to pass the MOT.
If you feel 5W is bright enough, look on eBay for LED (I know you aren't using LED with the capless Halford jobbies) but search for LED bulb resistor.
They go inline and put the resistance back up so they will flash correctly.
HTH. :)

Cheers Josho!
I understand now! Great info!
Yea I didnt realise they were supposed to be the side light! When I was searching for the headlights I assumed I was looking at all the same thing! Why it needs a sidelight as well with the angels I really dont know!
Will let ya know if I can get correct bulbs.

>The hazards always flash the right speed, don't ask why, I don't know but they do.
isn't that to do with the flasher unit...

Might not be like that in "modern" cars, but a similar electrical system I suspect.

relays specified by load...
Not enough watts = wrong flashing interval... (oooh, errr)

Those lights you gave the link to do'nt have indicators in them. They are daylight running lights, like a VOLVO !.

Yea I realise that now! Or at least I did when I saw the wiring!
But think I would have still bought them but would have been prepared for this problem.

May have found some from ECP!

May have found some from ECP!
I hope so, this thread is annoying!
Hope you get it sorted mate, i'm still in two minds about the lights but i trust your judgement

Really?
Quite like em on the car but cant really make a judgement myself until the bumper and grille back on.
-
when used as indicators they will alter their timing if the resistance changes
when being opeated by the hazard switch it uses a separate integral timer to control pulse length.
in short... hazards will always run at the same speed no matter what, where as indicators flash speed can be changed by altered circuit resistance
-
Update!
Ordered some bulbs on line hoping they would fit! NOPE!!!
Yesterday I was searching again and found some resistor things!
So got one today and fitted it and no blooming difference!
Have rang the company and now waiting for their Tech guy to ring back!
Maybe I have wired it in wrong! No instructions with it so the could be the problem!
-
Oh and Josho
Cant find any resistor bulbs!
-
Have you put the resistor in the right way round?
Also it depends on the quality of resistor, the end of it is marked Bronze, silver, or gold, and the charachteristics of each determine how accurate they are at that certain level ie; a 2kohm resistor with a bronze band will have a resistance of between 1.7 + 2.3 kohms, whereas a gold one will be very near 2kohm etc etc.... Not exact but you get the picture. Could be a determining factor though.
-
I put the resistor in right!
Ummmmm but I didnt have the wires in the correct pins of the car's terminal block! :embarassed:
So yes it does now work!
Ordered a second one today for the other side so that will all be sorted!
-
Glad u finally got it sorted!
-
Yea so am i!!!
If anybody needs bulbs I can highly recommend Consumabulbs

I find it hilarious when indicators go too fast. It's like LOOK OUT EVERYBODY I'M TURNING LEFT WHOOOOOAAAA HERE WE GOOOOO  :lipsrsealed:

That's my motor as it's got no front indicators now, but it is getting scrapped so who cares lol
