My other MK3 GTI 8v had an advisory for both rear wheel bearings.
The MOT tester said they needed tightening up as there is to much play in them. Soooo! How do I tighten the rear wheel bearings? She is a 1997 2.0 8v Golf GTI......Not my VR6!
Thanks in advance

remove wheel, remove centre bearing cap, remove split pin, tighten nut(not to tight, just over hand tight)...job done! better to replace them
-
same question from me but about the fronts  diy job?

Press needed for the fronts.
For the rears DO NOT overtighten the nut, hand tight only.
-
to be honest i would not take the gamble and tighten them! replace them its not a bad job to do on rear...
-
fronts you can diy if you know what you are doing, done many bearings without a press

It is possible with a large vice, but much much easier with a press.
What method did you use?
-
I use the good old hammer and socket method, done Volvo's, ford's, fiat's and vw's all this way, not one issue yet and the Volvo has just done 35k since I done them both

can you do a little how to for me, gonna give it a bash
-
I've seen several bearings that have needed several tonnes of pressure to release, there was no way a hammer and socket would of done it.
Its a bad idea generally when fitting new ones, as damage can occur.
Take the hub off, and take it to a garage if you haven't go a press or a large vice.

How much would a garage charge to do the fronts...Or how much is a press!
-
Depends how friendly you are with the garage, if you take the hub in it shouldn't be too much.
You can get a budget press off ebay for 100 quid, i've got one, and it hasn't failed me yet.
-
Coolio :)
for the price at a garage might aswell ebay it then!
That way I'll be sorted when mine go!

I'm gonna buy one of them right away. The bolt through wife's neck has seized again and it's a bugger to get it out with a Dremel.
