I have a second hand Mk3 from 1992 (from Spain) the air conditioner does not work (and I sure will do a good use of it), also I'm not an expert in car stuff by no means, I took it to have the gas reload it but it's not working still.
I checked the fuse and relays box and a lot of relays are missing, one being the air condition relay, here are some pictures:

Can some one tell me which one is the one for the air con, and which type of relay I have to get?
And also the other relays missing, can someone tell me which ones (and what are there for) are missing and the kind of relays I have to get.
One last thing: since there are missing do I have to be careful once I restore the relays?...maybe the took them out for a reason?
Thanks in advance.

Heres the link to boneybradleys electrical page, shows you which relays should be where.

Looks like you're just missing the air con and "headlights on buzzer" relay

Thanks!!!!
More quick questions:
1. Where can I buy the relays missing.
2. For some relays they seems to be more than an option to pick...wich one I sould get?
3. I seem to be missing the cruise control relay...Does my car have cruise control? How do I tell looking inside the car.
4. Once I have the relays do I have to be careful to see nothing overheats or something? I wouldn't like to have an electrical fire or something.
Please forgive me if my question are dumb simple.
Thanks in advance again.

Call your local VW dealer, I would only use genuine VW relays.

Only the TDI was available with cruise control.
Talk to VW, they will tell you which relay you should have, and as Mk3 Menace said, I'd buy them from VW too. Don't know how many dealers there are in spain.
My basic air con knowledge suggests to me that the relay may have been removed as the clutch on the compressor was firing at all times rather than just on the switch and therefore draining the battery.
It could have just been half inched for another car

How do u test a relay to see if its knackered? When I turn my ac on I don't hear the clutch engaging but the revs go up. Took the rely out and gave it a few taps and when I put it back in, it kept on ticking, so I took it out and tapped it a few mire times and replaced it. Now the ticking has stopped.

Stick 12v across the pins that control the switch. If it clicks it works

Hi,
From experience,I think the ac switch which is located near the receiver drier may be faulty. Its a four wite switch for the MK3 and 3 wire for the MK4 and MK5.
Replace that first, I believe with a charged system, all will work correctly.Cheers....

Hello guys,
Thanks for all the replies. I'll try your advice.
Ramjet, if you read this, please, you wrote: "ac switch which is located near the receiver drier may be faulty. Its a four wite switch for the MK3" I don't quite understand (English is not my mother tounge), I guess you aren't talking about the relay panel but the switch (the botton) that turns it on??? You mean I should dismantle it and see behind the plastic channel?, I don't get the "near the receiver drier"...if you can clearify or even better post some pictures.
Thanks again.

Have you checked any local car breakers, or online (ebay) etc. Obviously wont be a new relay, but may well get to the bottom of your problem and then you can decide to get new in your own time.
