Title: MK3 Rear Quarter - Advice On Cutting
Post by: MK4D4VE on 02 August 2011, 22:09
Hi all

Sorry for the rubbish thread title, but couldnt think of anything else.

Anyway, basically i am after some advice on the rear quarters/wings on a MK3 Golf. I have rolled my lip on arch and do not have too much problem with the Borbet alloys i have fitted but want to go a bit lower, but if i do it rubs alot! The easiest way i feel to do this rather then pulling the arch would be to cut the lip back flush and then use rust preventer but the only thing that concerns me is it being double skinned and the two skins being welded together. Can anyone advise me if cutting the lip will affect the skins and welds, or will it be ok?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Regards

David

I not would remove the lip, even rolled it adds a lot of strength.

Why not just get them flared a bit?

I was considering this but i am going to do the bodywork myself, including the spraying of the rear quarters but i dont really know how to go about flaring the arches, if i knew how to do it i think i would give it a go.

If it is just the inside lip then you can bend that up and under.

He has already done that with having it rolled.

Yeah its all been rolled already, the most annoying thing is that it is only rubbing slightly on the inside of the lip at the top and at the front of the arch at the height i want it. How thick is the lip? Rather then cut it off is there a possibility it can just be trimmed so it is less thick then it is currently?

It is not that thick so you will struggle to trim anything off.

Looks like i might have to flare the arch then as suggested. Do you have any suggestions on how to do this at all? I am going to spray my arches next week anyway so not too worried about the paint.

Look for a arch rolling company in your area, they can pull the arches as required.
