Title: Went to view an Aldi.... Test drove said Aldi...: THE VERDICT!
Post by: the_stink on 22 July 2011, 16:38
It was a Diesel a 140 S-Line 2.0 TDI

Tidy car, body work great next to no stone chips etc , full leather interior, 60k, 3 owners, full aldi SH

Was a very nice place to be i must say, went up there to generally check it out and see what they would offer me

My heads in a right pickle!

Cheaper to insure?  Really?  That much?

We can do something about the fuel economy.  It starts with the letter A and ends in F.

Remember an A3 will include thousands of pounds of free depreciation.

Joe, don't do it! Knowing you this comes with a pricey finance package attached to it. In 6 months you'll regret it as you'll be making those big loan payments again. If you really do have to get something cheaper to run get something older. It might be cheaper to run than the MKII but what about those monthly payments you'll be coughing up?

The MKII just needs some fettling, I thought you were nearly there with it?

Nick

Post by: the_stink on 24 July 2011, 10:27
With the finance 'if' I were to go ahead it would be against £5995 which i looked at 3 and 4 yrs prices

which at the moment I can afford to pay

I miss the comfort of a newer car and well its been one of those battles with my head for the last 6 months where i hate the car then love the car hate the car love the car and its just worn me out in all honestly, as said the other wk finish work at 8pm get to my car and then it doesnt start and once the rac etc have been out i dont get home till 9.45.

I really am not cut out for mk2 ownership (prop any car ownership tbh!) as something always happens

Again this particular A3 is in the bracket of cars that had problems with thier cylinder heads and ive spent most of yesterday reading through thread after thread of common faults etc which has put doubt in my mind and is prob a good thing as it has made me very cautious.

If only i hadnt sold my 1.8t in the bloody first place!

Post by: the_stink on 24 July 2011, 11:54
After some futher research its cheaper for me to get a loan through work which reduces the overall payment by about a 1k!! so again 'If' I were to go ahead it would be a bank loan and not finance as this works out cheaper in the long run and would be 3 yrs instead of 4

And the other thing being I would own the car

I know, I think what will most likely happen is i go and test drive it and then ive got a bench mark set. as mentioned need to spk to work as getting a loan through them for any amount works out a hell of a lot cheaper and yes 6k is alot of money!

And might have someone who wants my mk2 as well so overall I think im going to be looking around and see what is the best solution overall for me :)

im in the same posision joe! hate the golf then love the golf! i really dont know what to do. aldi a3 tdi or mk2 :| its only a weekend car! i priced up a new polo gti and it come to £20k. i can afford but dont wana be strapped with that much finance  around 6k is what id idealy spend, i have the mk4 which is paid for, probbaly sell for £2000 :\ so just deciding, i got a 5 door as fear as if i got the mrs preggers we wouldnt need to sell my pride and joy, but i really fancy a 3 door, or only a 5 door if its audi a4 etc :|

and my insurance would be cheap! i would get a little 1.4 or something, but for me its a weekend car! i do 1k+ miles a week in a transit connect, restricted to 65mph so i need some poke for the weekend

Post by: the_stink on 24 July 2011, 14:12
well looking around I have found a few other examples which are a couple of grand cheaper and of a similar spec as the one im test driving on monday

If I can get a loan sorted from work, which works out a hell of a lot cheaper than any finance deal!

Title: Test drive of the A3 done and. . . . .
Post by: the_stink on 25 July 2011, 18:44
TBH i think this one is a bit of a lemon!

It was a great drive, and a awesome place to be, had a good bit of poke to it did take it down a stretch of ring-road nothing extreme but it pulled very well!

Bad points . . .There are a few!

Got to the garage and its always inspires confidence when they have to jump start the car!

But ive been doing my homework and im aware of various problems that come with these engines and one being the cylinder head and a few ive chatted to have said a tale tale sign of this is white smoke on start up . . . .Que white smoke . . . ahh there it is!  :lipsrsealed:

so matey boy goes to fetch the can of diesel to fill it up a bit, checking the tyres and its like a bag of bloody all-sorts! and the rear passenger side was on the limit.

another problem ive been made aware of is the air con fans staying on after the car has stopped leading to a drain battery (mmm ring anybells?) we go into the office look  at the service history and the vosa sight etc told him my concerns to which he tells me they will change the water pump as they didn't do it when they did the cambelt and would also give a yrs guarantee i said id think it over check a few things blah blah

as i leave to walk to my car (in the office for at least 10-15mins) go past the A3 and whats that i hear? the fans still going like the clappers!

So needless to say im not going to go any further with this particular one but going to have a good look around

Dunno what it is with Audi's.  I viewed one the other day that looked fantastic on paper, great price too.  Took it out and it just didn't have the power I'd expect from a 1.9TDI 130.  Full service history, yet I still think the turbo was on it's way out.

Think it was an '02 plate.  1st and 2nd gear were awesome, 3rd upwards though there was no power there at all, felt like rocking forward and back would make it accelerate faster.

Why not go have a look at some Seat Leons as an alternative?  My parent's 140 is a good little tool and I suspect the 170bhp TDI will be a proper thumper.

But if you prefer the Dark Pump...

........The car has been mapped but it's a safe map to 188bhp. This is not strenuous on the clutch or turbo. The car was running 174bhp as standard (YES that's right, 174!) so I only improved the power a little but the feel of the car now through th revs is awesome. Pulls like a train in every gear at almost any RPM. MPG is incredible with me achieving 58mpg on my average commute to and fro from work which involves streets, A roads and motorway for a short period.

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=323671

£4,600.

Nice.

The MK5 GT TDI 140 I had was a great car.

Easily remapped to 180.

Get's my vote.

have to disagree with you there. I would argue that the A3 has a shocking ride quality compared to the mk5. Not only that but for its age the MK5 has a relatively nice interior...

where as the A3 has... well the same regurgitated interior every audi has. In fact it even has some of the cheaper bits and bobs from its better looking cousin.... yes the MK5!!

The MK5 interior is worse than the MK4 interior in terms of quality.  The A3 interior is a much nicer place to be

Equally IMO the A3 is the better looking car; it has body coloured bumpers for starters, most come with 18's and half leather interior depending on the trim leve.  The ride quality is excellent and no worse than a MK5.  It shouldn't be either seeing as its built on the same floor pan and shares the majority of its components with the MK5

Given the choice between the two, for me it was the easiest decision I've ever made

Title: Re: Test drive of the A3 done and. . . . .
Post by: R32UK on 25 July 2011, 20:55
I find the audi has a much more crashier ride than the mk5. Agreed that the audi has the better quality interior... but I am so sick of the same old audi interior across the range. they need to change that shizzel asap imo.

Looks are subjective of course... the A3 has been out for what appears to be a decade!!

As for choice... im not saying that audi isnt better, just not worth the premium when the mk5 holds its value much better  than other rivals anyway and more commonly can be found in 5dr form.

... and just to add, everyone that owns a MK6* thinks audi a3 are the biggest pile of sh!t going (not me of course )

* most of them are to$$ers anyway so I wouldnt worry about it

Well the 140 I drove today was full leather, and it was such a nice place to be and I didn't find the ride bad at all but mind you the mk2 is lowered 40mm and you feel every bump in the road. I would prefer a audi and esp after today actually driving one it was awesome.

Mpg is important and I'd say the max I'd be prepared to pay is 7k but ideally anything less than that! But ill continue my search and see what I come across.

The only decent bit of the MK6 is the interior. Its the rest of the car that is pants!!

Plus looks wise 5 door A3s look as though they are stretched...MK5 golfs actually look as good in 5 door as they do in 3 format IMO.

And as for the trim quality...okay, bits n pieces in the 5 are worse but all this rubber door grabs is shocking...they all peel and scuff real easy. The one thing the tougher door card and dash on the 5 is better for is resisting scuffs which is useful when you have kids.

Do it mate I love my 140.. It's not exactly fast but I didn't expect it to be and after a remap will be a lot better and even with coilovers fully wound down it's still pretty comfy and it's only got teething problems at 133k.. And the dsg box is so comfy for driving in traffic and such..

With regards to the cylinder head problem I know a lot seemed to have suffered but mines been fine and no history of having it changed from Audi and mines on a 04 plate..

Good luck with the choice

Yeah have no idea how it happened but it has and well put doubt in my mind straight away, similar to the first one showing lots of bad signs which the garage were unaware / didnt care about as such, but that one has now sold!

Must admit i was looking at alternatives as im finding as nice as Audis are and having had a good drive in a couple normal roads and ring roads, it is ALOT of money to try and get the one you want in my case about 1 >>3k over the budget I have set.

A few facelift Skoda Octava VRS have caught my eye the 170 TDi, have been looking at Seat's as well and a few MKV GT's but again these diesels hold thier value!

108k down to 97.1k is not a 13k loss.

Anyway, at least you've caught the rubbish before it's too late.

Have to admit I was tempted by a Octavia VRS 170 Diesel I saw recently, it was an estate too, so ultra practical family wagon, economical and fun.

I often watch my trip/avg mpg display while driving. With the price of petrol these days, and not being a boy racer anymore, I'm usually trying to keep my mpg up.
I particularly do this on the few occassions I drive to work rather than take the train to see whether it was actually cheaper than the stupid inflated train fare.

I love spending money on petrol, but I'd rather spend it on petrol when I can enjoy it, like on track, rather than pointlessly in every day driving.

I would rather spend more and be happy with a petrol than get a diesel and log my mpg every time i drive it

I'd rather spank the backside off my diesel and find it's still returned +35MPG. Last time I spanked a Golf6 GTI it returned 16MPG.  Spend double on fuel when I'm happy with the performance of my diesel?  I'd be mental.

DH how the he'll do you return 35mpg and spank it?? What? My old diesel belongs to the missus now and although it was chipped if pushing a proper drive that'd get the Gti into the low -20s I'd still get -30mpg from the diesel. You not driving the diesel hard enough cos of the narrow power banding  :lipsrsealed:
