Hi all,
in the near future im going to invest in a new toy... Golf GTI mk2. This will be my car i shall spend money on and a small project.
my question is, with it not being my day to day car (so fuel isnt a major problem) which enguine shall i go for? Which is more fun to drive and will i get best results with?
I may even think about turning it into a track car.
16v is quicker than the 8v but im not 100% sure on the stats of these. Wich would be best for me?
Dont really fancy the VR6 tbh
(if iv posted in wrong section im sorry, im new and just need a little help :D)
cheers in advance guys

Yup, it's the 2.0 16v engine found in a Mk3. As Wayne said it's 150bhp and isn't heavy enough to unbalance the car too much
-
think im gonna go for the 16v...
strip it, replace everything (full monty service) should do the trick.
il keep you all posted on status
cheers

I don't see the point in the 2.0 conversion. All you've gained is 11bhp.

It depends on the extent of the rust, as has been seen time and time again it can be much more terminal than it appears initially. Regardless of whether or not you can repair it i'd hold out for one with as little rust as possible
-
ye agreed.
heres another one for you all, 3door or 5? :D

A common problem is girls will break your heart.
Other than that, look for bubbling flaking paint which may be hiding rust, or any dull looking paintwork, as that could be a dodgy paintjob after a dodgy repair.
If you must, check history, they'll eventually need a gearbox rebuild, headgasket, common on an old car. The diff bearings tend to go too. The rest is a few quid here and there really.

lol its more like i break girls hearts  haha
which do you think looks better, 3 or 5 door?
i will be taking rear seats out etc

I used to have a Mk2 16v GTI. It was a great car, much more fun than the Mk3 16v I had.
Never had a problem with the Mk2's 1.8 16v engine (even after 155k miles), my only problem with it was rust in the floor which needed welding for the MOT. So as said, when looking at Mk2s check the condition of the shell, everything else can be replaced.
Swapping a 2.0 16v engine into a Mk2 from a Mk3 GTI is a common upgrade and relatively easy.
Even if you're not doing the engine swap, the 1.8 16v engine is decent and with brake and suspension upgrades can be a fun car on the track.
As for doors, I liked my 3 door Mk2, but I did miss having the back doors, but if it's only a toy and you don't need it to be practical, then 3doors is fine.

Drive one.
I'd go 3-door as if you're caging it (from the previous thread) then the pillars will line up with the cage IIRC. Easier to clamber in and out of buckets with wider doors, too.
Thing is (and this is something I've repeated before) if you're buying it to track and drive hard you will get far more bang for your buck with a Golf3 16V, stripped out.
Golf2s are too dear for what they are now for a toy, unless you can find one attached to a convenient and unwitting coffin-dodger.

With a Mk3 engine?
No thanks.

You are FAIL.
If you've been out in a well put together ABFed Golf2 you'll know why I am saying this.
The engine and gearbox are the only bits from the Golf3 worth having.

No, don't think so.

Think what you like.
You're wrong.
If you're not wrong then you'd better provide some strong reasoning.

I think you should.
I have to agree that the best bits from a late MK3 are the engines and boxes.
what other engines do you recommend then?
You love all valvers really.
