Title: Do you enjoy your job?
Post by: mellow yellow on 12 July 2011, 14:54
i seem to go round in circles with my job. I dont really enjoy it as such, i've just done it for so long that i seem to coast through it on a daily basis and dont really have any ambitions to go any further. Just wondering if its more important to you to enjoy what you do or just to pick up a paycheck every month?

tbh there is not a lot else i could do instead which would cover my monthly bills.

i'm an insurance broker btw....

*disclaimer - i know i'm lucky to have a job*

I like my job.
I work offshore for 2 weeks and get 3 weeks off afterwards, I like the work (boring sometimes, but usually challenging), I like not having to do any commuting, I like the fact I can spend nothing for 2 weeks if I don't want to...and I love the time off.
The wages are pretty decent too.
All in all, I'm happy doing what I do.

i enjoy the job even though the wage is rubbish, and hardly any hours, and my boss is an arsehole...

I don't enjoy my job anymore. But I am starting at a competitor on the role above mine in 2 weeks time. Just slogging through my notice atm - not interested to be here anymore.

My problem is I don't enjoy working!

I have a good job but have been with the same company for 10 years now... recently bought a house with the fiancée, getting married next year, not even going to contemplate a change for now despite being bored. (talking about the job still not the missus)

When I get pee'd off I remind myself to be thankful that I have a job, a woman, a house, two cars etc....

If you really are bored and the risk is low or you have litle responsibilities, get out there and do something else, a change is as good as a rest.

I really enjoy my job....which has just under 10 months before ending! I always knew the credit crunch was going to get me at some point!  (the bank I work for apparantly started the doom if you listen to some!)

I have an interview elsewhere very soon and luckily it's the banco which scores really really bad with customer service, so I may fit well in?  :lipsrsealed:

I'm at the point where I wake up in the morning and have that sinking feeling cos I really dont want to go to work.
Always very challenging, and different but still when you work your bollox off for the last 3 years on one particular ship, volunteer to go onto other ships that are doing sea training and get chuck ups from them, pass senior rates command course when others have failed, your boss still takes all the credit even though have been covering for all his inadiquacies, and get left out for promotion as the blue eyed boy who follows you round everywhere as he knows feck all. Kind of gives you a bleak outlook on the whole thing so you think whats the point! Oh I did get a skippers commendation as another line manager knows the score and puts you in for it, and on the certificate your name is spelt wrong. Sums it all up really.

Oh I'm a leading weapons engineer in the Navy if you care!

Nope, but it pays alright and I'm shallow like that.

The problems is there are just so many other things I would rather be doing than being at work. Like down the pub, or on the beach, or at Selhurst Park, or down the pub.

I dont think there is a job the world short of being a F1 driver or the Brazilian womens beach volleyball oil boy that I would actually "enjoy".

BMS Engineer.

Well i'm a hgv driver and i get good days and bad days really, the things that get me down are attitude from other drivers and the constant pressure from clueless management, the wages are ok but to be honest if i could find a way out i would.

the banks that started the doom are mainly American, the likes of Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, Bank of America and Lehmans to mention just four. You could also include Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (yes they are real financial institutions).

I know this because I work for one of those banks that did start the doom.

Generally enjoy the work I do and where I work, lucky enough to work with one of my best mates and have a boss that looks after his employees. There are some dicks where I work that irritate you, by generally being lazy fatherless sons but you get them most places.

I'm working in a refinery at the moment with the E&I team, mostly fixing issues that pop up and doing ATEX certification and risk assessments. I like it but would prefer to work with control systems, DeltaV and SCADA and the like, as that was my favourite part of my college course. I finish up in September and am going back for another year of college, hopefully I can get into a control system job then

Work for HMCTS, load of balls as some police officers are c*nts & same with the public, but I do get along with the majority which is handy if police ever pull me

Job is boring as hell as 90% off the time I am doing nothing, it can get exciting with some incidents that kick off and the adrenalin kicks in with people doing silly things with knives. Since I'm sub contracted I end up getting a much worse wage the the real HMCTS staff and no pension.

Will be looking for a new job as soon as I settle in my new house as I've had a few offers already and I may be the only person that thinks this, but there's plenty off jobs out there and everyone I know that was determined has got a job or changed job in this recession.

I enjoy most jobs ive done tbh.If i don't like it i move on.I was a qualified mechanic(before all this technician balls )Which i enjoyed but then it got to the point where it got into a case of plug it in and change that part  Then became Lpga registered and started converting cars and vans to run on lpg,but again after i had tackled all the difficult jobs i got bored.

Ive been a mechanical engineer for 8 or so years now and love it.Ive travelled europe, met interesting people learned loads of useful things and still learning every day.
Every day is a challenge and nothing is ever the same.
I currently work in a Forge making aerospace parts with a 16,500ton Weingarten screw press.Im working the weekend shift(have since oct last year) 7am-11pm sat and 3pm-7am sun/mon. Maintaining and improving the machinery whilst the crew run it.Im the only engineer working at the weekend and i look after a massive site on my own which i love as im never bored and time passes quick.

I then get the rest of the week off to work on my car and make money fixing others and doing gas conversions.I also get paid a lot more money for doing the shift nobody else wants to do.

I work for one of the big supermarkets in the uk (the orange one!!) as a home delivery driver, delivering people's shopping throughout the day. Although everyday is different and u get to meet lots of different customers (some fit, some ok, some just fcuking greedy!!) it's an OK job. Pay is sh!t!! But enjoy driving around all day.

I just need more money, I take home just over a grand a month, also have a mortgage to pay and a house to maintain so don't get much cash at the end of the month. BUT my job is safe, EVERYONE needs food so don't think il be made redundant any time soon!

I love my job! I'm a supervisor lifeguard at the UK's biggest and oldest outdoor pool and everyday is awesome. Some days go a bit slower than others but I'm never bored. We always manage to find something to do, be it pi$$ing about or actually working, hell I even go to work on my days off! Both of my managers are awesome, I get on really well with them and the same goes to the whole lifeguarding team. Even though we only know each other since april we're already like a group of real good friends both in and out of work. Days with great weather are just pure awesome, what's not to like about covering yourself in some tanning oil and sitting in a vest on poolside for 5 or 6 hours a day?....

Sounds easy but it's actually pretty hard, you can't just wonder off into another dimension and sit back and enjoy the sun. You have to concentrate hard the whole time and see everything that's going on. Easy in a small pool but when you've got 113m x 47 it's pretty difficult.

Im in the same situation here. I like the trade I'm in, I have a ok paid job for what I'm doing. It's easy, we have a good variety of work an I have no commuting expenses.

Yet there is something in my head which wants something different. Maybe the grass isn't greener on the other side?

I think we all want something different from time to time. It's finding the balance between happiness and salary. The grass isn't always greener, it depends what you're running away from. On the other hand, other taking the plunge can reveal a pleasant surprise.

Yep almost got caught out last month when I got offered another job. They looked very good on paper and it seemed like I'd earn good money but after some research and a bit of luck I realised they were cocks. :)

I've only had one job where I was content and I got made redundant.

I'm a sound engineer, making radio programmes (mostly live) for a certain British broadcaster.
Some days it's great, others not so good.
Management aren't fantastic, bureaucracy is ridiculous and I have to work weekends, bank holidays, Christmas, New Year, nightshifts and stuff.
But the pay is good (for the amount of work) and I get paid extra for nightshifts and there's plenty of overtime going if you need more.
Besides I get to spend all my spare time at work (quite a lot) on here.

work for british gas as a meter engineer, i really enjoy the work as always at a different house and my area altho quite big, is fairly easy to  get about, i get a fully tooled up van and fuel paid for, i dont pay parking tickets so park wherever i like within reason, pay is not that great but atm its enough, and after 5months in the field i have just gained a bit of promotion and a bit more money. all in all im pretty chuffed doing my job, however as with alot of the posts in this thread management just dont seem to have a clue, i really do  wonder sometimes just how much of their brains they have cut out when they don that white collar and tie

Yea it's not bad, pretty varied from day to day, month to month. Get to work on things by myself sometimes, sometimes big projects as part of a team. Get the opportunity to lead on projects too which is great. Manage my own time, am out and about most of the time doing different things and meeting people which is great as I hate being stuck in the office all day. Best of all is the people I work with, they are absolute stars (with a few exceptions!)

About to have a huge restructure though, joining a new massive team and losing a lot of my friends to other teams so bit nervous/sad about that

Stop covering the fuel pumps with paint. That's a good way to do it. It's a right pain in the arse to check them out when you lot return them after they have been painted.

I've only just started working as a lifeguard in April, when the pool opened. However through hard work I've been promoted to supervisor which has opened my doors to the local leisure centre. Most of the pool's staff works there as gym instructors and lifeguards which is what I'm chasing up. I've applied for the supervisor position there starting in september when the pool closes and my assistant manager is best friends with one of the leisure centre's managers who is responsible for recruitment. I've met him already so that's a start. Hopefully for winter it'll be lifeguard/gym instructor

So technically speaking this is all your fault Bobo?

the company I work for, hell yes. for us the layoffs started at the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007. For the rest of the economy things started to go off the rails at 2008.

Most aspects of my job I enjoy. I work as a composite laminator and work with everything from pre preg to polyester, but my boss is a complete tool now and then and wants to be involved in everything everyone does which just annoys the hell out of me. He has been really good to work with the last few days on a big rush job though so it's not all bad. I only work 39 hours a week and have a half day Friday which is a bonus

Found a new job doing a wide variety of stuff and meanwhile Vestas shut meaning 400 people were out of work in an instant so every cloud and all that

I work for ABB, did an apprenticeship as an electrical distribution technician but then got made redundant. Was offered another job in a different department commissioning and overhauling generator circuit breakers in power stations which I took and am soon to move back over. Now got the experience and training of both departments and I love it.

I work in a job I enjoy and obviously get paid for it which is a bonus. I'd do it as a hobby (except the paperwork) if I could. Hours are sometimes a pain in the ar5e, but it pays fairly well.

Anyone else work in the HV electrical industry?

I worked for Tesco and hated it. Was about to become a Deputy Manager (£45k) but knew i would be stuck there the rest of my life! So left

Im now in IT, currently doing some migration work using windows 7 for a major investment bank. Money is the same is Tesco and i enjoy my job more and do less hours with superb prospects. Only took me a week to get anew job which was lucky as well!

If all goes well ill be on track for an RS3 so yes, i definitely enjoy my job!

I work for a major supermarket as a management trainee, I do enjoy it most of the time.

Although going up to Yorkshire for a meeting on Wednesday will be hard work, fortunately they're paying expenses!

Then 2 months of night work, not ideal at the moment but ALOT more money to spend which will be ideal!

Agreed it's moved over to pre preg rather than poly or epoxy hand laminating now which is why so many places have had to lay off. Vestas is a definite example of this, bastards

It's fine so long as you're not allergic to the various unpleasant chemicals in use on the job.

As far as I can make out from various friends who have worked in the industry, if you aren't allergic to the compounds in use then you probably will be before very long, after you've been sensitised to them...

Still i expect you do more? The hours were irrelevant, it just made the hourly rate seem higher to attract more people, was 40 when i first started
My good friend still loves it, he wants to keep moving up, just was not for me. I knew if i took the deputy role i would spend the rest of my life there and as im getting older im more interested in money vs happiness; happiness should always win! Im learning C++, C#, HTML, CSS etc to further my skills in IT and hoping my current role will boost my CV while i do it. Average pay for a C# contractor is £400 a day and up but will take a year or two before i can reach that, then i will truly say i love my job. At the moment im quite happy though, i couldnt sit and come on here while i worked at Tesco!!
