Looking at a Mk1 cabriolet...
Has anyone de-arched and de-bumpered the big bumper models?
If so, what's involved?
I'd like to put the chrome style small bumpers on and leave the arches off.

IIRC it's a case of unbolting the old and replacing with new, same mounting points bumper iron etc. de-arching is just a case of unscrewing the kit and praying that the arches are in good condition.. I have rolled without the trim before.
Wheres this mk1 talk coming from anyway!?
-
is it a 'proper' clipper?
-
is it a 'proper' clipper?
If it's a full Clipper the only problem I can see is that there will be holes in the sills where the skirts are fitted, bumpers won't be a problem.
-
It's a Karmann?
I had a Mk1 tin top before, always wanted another... but a cabby is more affordable, plus I have something in mind.

 I think the same applies if it's got skirts, no biggy though

is it in sh!te condition then? not sure why you'd want to do this to a proper clipper really... i can understand the desire to go skinny bumpers but not on something like a clipper?
-
Is this bad? :undecided:
It's not in the best condition, I just thought it'd look a bit tidier...
Are the Karmann's quite sought after then?

all the cabrio's were karmann iirc
whats the date/spec of the car in question?

It's a 1993 1.8 manual with a cloth interior.

They are all Karmann as that's who made them. Fact of the day, Karmann coachworks in Osnabrück were the largest independent motor vehicle manufacturing company in Germany until a couple of years ago and were recently in the poop. ( I think VW have been helping them out being their longest standing customer) They have been going since 1901 and have produced all sorts from their own cars like the ghia, nissan micra convertables, Land Rover Defenders in Brazil to motorhomes!

year would indicate that this is a late run out model... so its either clipper, sportline or rivage
have you go access to the V5 details so you can check what it says on there?
http://www.mk1vw.info/modules.php?name=Info&op=viewtut&id=118 (http://www.mk1vw.info/modules.php?name=Info&op=viewtut&id=118)
figures for mk1 cabrios in 1993 were as follows..
GTi Cabriolet 0
Clipper 217
Sportline 143
Rivage GTi 126
Rivage Leather 25
If its a sportline or rivage i'd leave well alone, clipper wouldn't be such a disaster as its total production was 6,196 - however my personal preference would be to keep the kit on and keep it standard.. but then again I am all for keeping the later mk1's standard/only minor mods.. and i think older ones are best being retro
however, that said, this is/will be your car, you can do what you like to it!
-
I'll have to have a look when I go for a proper viewing.
I don't want to play my part in reducing the amount of dwindling standard cabby's on the road if it's a desirable model.
I may look out for one that's already adordned in small bumpers.

^^ good stuff,
Jack, got any more info on the car, link, pics? Also what is it you're looking for in a cabby as small bumper ones are about for good prices. Are fussed about age, engine type and spec?

It's in the local freeads, I'll try and scan the ad when I get back.
I'm not fussed about age or engine, so long as it's manual.
Would prefer a cloth interior and no mould though.

Cool, well keep us posted.

check carpets for dampness.. especially in the footwells and in the boot, also check scuttle panel for water build up due to blocked drainage plugs

Reason for saying that, is I went to view one that had been 'dry stored' for 6 years last week and the glass had gone green and the once black leather was white and fluffy.
I'll give whatever I get a good poking though as I'm not handy with a welder.

happens with storage.. its just bateria from bits that have been in contact with hoomans.. steering wheel and seatbelts are main culprits for nasty mould... comes off in about 2 seconds flat though with a bit of APC
green glass can become clean glass with a pressure washer and a good glass polish ;)

But it's smelly!
As long as it's not an indicator of a damp issue I don't mind a removable crust/layer of mould.

Check out the links I just posted.... I'm sure if there is some crud to clean up, Guy can give some advise on the matter.

if you'd sat in a barn for 6 years you'd smell too!

Cheers, brilliant stuff!
I may put it into a checklist when I go out to take a look.

Spot on VW made a significant cash investment to keep Karmann going.
Worth a read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karmann interesting how many cars they have built or had input in.

Yeah I don't think a lot of people realise how many vehicles they have been responsible for... I first properly looked them up many moons ago when I had my 81 cabby that just had the Karmann badge on it. Just clicked your wiki link and spotted they made Escort cossies!
Would be interested to see a complete list since 1901!

Escort Cosworth's were all hand made due to the work needed to convert from fwd to 4wd including a new floorpan, the only panels they shared with a std Escort was the roof, boot and doors from memory.
