Title: Mini coupe
Post by: Mr_F on 21 June 2011, 12:57
Golf, Scirocco, Eos Beater?

http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/mini-coupe-revealed-2011-06-21

I think the design department drove a mini under the trailer of a red lorry myself.

Probably the best looking Bini yet. Needs lowering a bit more than 52mm if that image is anything to go by.

The front looks sick and so does the convertible version of the coupe. I still think that the back looks home made, like some guy built it in a shed.

Bini, Bini, Bini, Bini, Bini, Bini

I was establishing a difference between the so called New MINI's and the older Mini's, using the term Bini is more accurate than saying New MINI as they're a decade old now. The last of the old Mini's mk VII imo were very nice, the new Mini's don't really do it for me.

Besides... they're not mini, they're massi.

I've got one of the last classics and I love it.  I wold love a MINI at some point either a clubman or a countryman as the hatch isn't really big enough for everyday for me.  Our club has old and new and a trying to promote a united Mini/MINI scene one day we hope it will happen

Yeah they're bigger but with all the crash protection they have to be my 1999 classic has side impact bars and an air bag scary stuff really.

This is an argument on a lot of the Mini forums and one guy said well look at the golf te new golf is no bigger then the MK1 I think he must be blind.
Title: Re: Mini coupe
Post by: Jack3559 on 21 June 2011, 14:32
Can see what you mean about the new golf being bigger...

Even the polo is bigger than the Mk1 golf.

Difference being though, the golf is marketed as a golf, not a mini.

I love MINIs but they're barely related to a proper mini.

I love how quick folk are to jump on the bandwagon that the new MINI is owned by BMW, as if foreign input to the car makes it any less cool.

Cause after all, the original was British all the way to it's roots... Alec Issigonis from Greece.

As far as the topic goes. I like the idea but there are a two problems.

It's a 2 seater coupe yet is no lighter or faster than the regular JCW hatch. The reason being is that it actually works out heavier

The styling is a bit marmite. I love the styling of the hatch and the convertible model but that roof just doesn't look good in my opinion.

Title: Re: Mini coupe
Post by: Jimp on 21 June 2011, 14:40
It looks ok I guess. Looks like the Mini cabrio but with a lower roof line. Maybe if the rear end and roofline were more coupe-like it would be better. Meh  :undecided:

That's true, but equally so the new MINI has a good list of Brits involved.

I was just nit picking. TBH most of the MKI MINI was deigned by Rover before BMW put their oar in. It was originally going to run the K series.

Yep that normally shuts people up as does the fact the any classic mini built after 1994 is techincally a 'BMW' Mini as they owned rover.

To be honest I didn't like the new MINI at first but at then end of the day BMW have done a cracking job with it they have not only kept the name alive the have completly revied it lets face it how many new classic minis did you see on the road when they were still being built??.  How many british jobs has it helped secure?? I don't know but I feel sure if the MINI wasn't built in oxford then lots more companies would have closed.  Mini/MINI United Not Divided

The thing that really upsets me is the fact that my friends who have MINI'S have had their cars damaged at shows by low life idiots who think they shouldn't be at shows
Title: Re: Mini coupe
Post by: Jack3559 on 21 June 2011, 15:03
I don't see a problem with it not being British, in fact, I prefer German cars.

The hate isn't because it was a 'British' icon gone continental.

It's because it's a big car marketed as a teeny tiny car.

Engines built at Hams Hall, Assembled down the road, employs no end of jobs and creates money for the UK through massive exports, ok, so it says BMW somewhere else but the fact is were S&^% hot at engine technology and these big companies know it.

I like the mini after not liking it originally, just wish they had a more tactile controls package!

Bet they can build you a new one quicker than Wolf'y too.

Yep dammed if they do dammed if they don't if it hadn't of been for BMW in the mid 90's Rover would have killed the Mini off years ago.  I was lucky to be invited to the luanch of the WRC team by MINI which of course I accepted what an awesome car looking forward to them doing a full season.  If BMW didn't have the MINI name then to me the car could have the same appeal. I may be biased but I can see a resemablce to the classic Mini in the MINI with its cheecky looks and fantatic handling

How many hair dressers and personal trainers do we have in this country?

Original mini was based on a concept used by the Germans in WW2, so really it has just gone home........
Something about driving round in BL kit kat wrapper that the "new" mini does not have, chance of surviving a crash maybe? i liked them anyhoo.
New mini is like Ipods and Iphones, a branded must have for the metrosexual who does not care so long as it is in fashion.
Just happens to be a fairly good car, although most nail technicians would not know the difference.

the new mini is a class car to drive. i dont like all the variants they have created and they should have stopped at the cabrio. I would take a mini cooperS over any of the other superminis anyday.

as for the coupe... looks like some took a match box car and stood on it :undecided:

I'm foreign, so why would I care if the MINI was owned by a foreign company? I'm not jumping on any bandwagons other than the use of BINI, which I wasn't using it in a derogatory way and lots of people use it to make the distinction between the 'new MINI' and the pre-BMW Mini.

If they called it a BMW 1 or BMW hatch or something it'd be fine...

They have called it a mini ... it's not. They make "john cooper" models which he has nothing to do with, bit disrespectful

Nice cars, wrong name

His son does the upgrades.

o god what is he thinking!
at least it's money for him at the end of the day i suppose.
still, "my dad tuned mini's, i tune big heavy things mums buy called a mini" is a quote he most deffinately said

His dad started the company so his dad tuned the new MINI's also...

... but your quote... I like it. Also applies to GTI's I suppose. Or even any modern car compared to it's original version however many years ago.

It'd be fine if it wasn't a "john cooper" version, yes he designed it, but it's not as big as a step up, or as special as it used to be, all commercialized now.

John Cooper thought:
"I need a job. A way to make money. Something I'm good at. Hmmm..."
And then a bloke in BMW-Mini thought:
"I need something to sell Minis. To make more money. Something Mini owners will like. Hmmm..."
And everyone lived happily ever after except the hardcore Mini fans :afro:

Well said unless all the moaners have several billion £ to buy the brand and then invest the kind of money it takes to keep developing then MINI will be owned by BMW.  It amazes me that people don't seam to run down Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce etc for being iwned by German/Indianowners etc.  THe MINI brand is here to stay and I for one am glad
