I was finally freed from my crash repaired Golf and decided on replacement. The contenders were – GTI, Golf R, S3, 135i, RS3. And the winner is....
Golf R
I tested one yesterday with ACC and 19†wheels. It was heavy but pleasant. Actually with ACC in comfort the ride was better than on my 18†GTI in Comfort. Steering was heavier than on GTI and in Sport almost too heavy – I would say track mode only. It had 4000 miles on the clock and not a single rattle in the cabin. DSG much the same as on GTI, except that in D it tries to get into a higher gears earlier. Overall very impressed.
I don’t expect any significant discounts and will be buying with cash so the only factor is the waiting time. I was told 4-6 months. Will check with other dealers but I guess that’s what is to be expected.
Meanwhile I’m on the hunt for a £300 runner:) Needs to work until December.

Very nice mate, if i were changing now i think the R would win it for me too.
Hopefully the wait won't be too long.

Congratulations Radek. Now you can whizz away on the accident spot in the wet!
I am seriously also considering selling my beloved GTI and getting a used R. Not because I am unhappy with it, far from it, but because it has been targeted twice in two months and has had the roof damaged.
If or when I do, I'll get a Shadow Blue R, i.e. if I can find one.

They're still £30k for a used one, which is far too much money imo (For me anyway)

So true! The one I drove yesterday was 37.500! A brand new will be that price... But it's a sort of "Buy now" and pay more or wait and pay less.
Shadow blue or rising blue? That is the key question

Yes agree there Jim , I could have bought one this week but at £36k in white lovely motor

I agree, look great in that colour.

These prices are just getting silly now. I know it's been said before, but £30-40k for a Golf?
Having said that, I would guess that a good few owners don't pay with real money and only consider the monthly payments, therefore the actual list price becomes irrelivant.

Agree, VW were pushing hard for PCP scheme with very low final value - £11k after 3 years for the R. That is 30% of the purchuse price after 3 years with normal mileage! Parker's estimate is 15-16k. But you can hand the car back after 3 years or get a new one and you pay £500-600 a month. Sounds ok to many.
Question nr 2 - 18" or 19"?
I only planned 18" but it actually drove ok on 19". Any thoughts?
-
I'd get 19's on the R.
Out of 'interest' how much are the monthly payments? Deposit etc?

So call it £550 a month. After 3 years, that's cost the best part of £20k to drive round in a nice car, but if it's handed back, they'll be nothing to show for it.

Deposit is max 30%. Don't know what the min is. In my case we were talking my GTI as p/x so that would be 11.5k and 7.5k cashback. The rest minus final value (11k) is at 7.9% APR. I think £460 a month for 36 months but I wasn't interested in any finance.

It will be targeted even more if you get an R. I know cos someone I know has one and it's been scratched 4 times and dented at least twice.
anyway it is nowhere nice as looking as the GTI.

WAS, Steve! WAS.
£35k+ of private school fees + the rest.
Have to watch the pennies or do more Private Work. Can't be arsed at present dealing with the Pomeranian doggy brigade. And unfortunately at my age, prostitution is not an option either.
-
Gizzy: Maybe if the car was not Red, it would not be so attractive. If I catch the fatherless son of a b!tch, I would not be able to control my Persian temper.
-
Asker, You could buy another colour golf, GTI/GTD/R whatever, remove the badges and fit bluemotion badges.
No other cars damaged just yours?

Only the black Golf Mk6 TDi that now has three large depressions on its roof.

Congrats on your new car choice ... you won't regret it
With regard to wheel choice have a read here from Reply #4 on, and remember about the inner headlight colour difference between 18"'s and 19"'s :-
http://www.rforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=1301.0
I have the 19"'s and the ride is'nt too bad at all, very similar to my MK V GTI and R32.

Good choice - and definitely go with the 19's

Sorry guys, it will be 18". The roads were I live are a challenge for 18" GTI. I didn't want to push my luck.
Apart from that it will be Rising Blue, DSG, 5 door, ACC, RNS510, Dynaudio, Winter pack, lux and storage, rear A/B, RVC+sensors. I'm not a fan of leather so cloth is fine.
Got a very good deal - a lot more than I exected. Still, it's sh@t load of money  16 weeks I was told. I wouldn't count on that - I recon 5-6 months is more likely but we'll see.
-
Did you manage to get it ordered with the Rear view camera?
-
What deal did you get Radek ? im considering a R buying 2nd hand or new, thanks.
-
Drove a silver M3 saloon yesterday. Very few around. Wow, what a car. Loved it. Maybe get that one and still keep Wolfgang. Hmmmm....
-
^ please don't get a cock car.
-
Snoops: I have a Crackberry so might as well get a cock car. It's going for a very attractive price as the owner's business has gone bust. This means, that for cash on the nail, I'd have a low mileage very fast car bargain.
Oh dear, just realised I'll have a parking problem. Decisions, decisions ....
-
I'd been debating what to get next and the Golf R was at the top of my list. I was then convinced by my wife to test drive the Polo GTI and I loved it.
300kg's lighter
absolutely no turbo lag due to the supercharger.
Still handled well
47mpg
£20k for a 5dr DSG Deep black pearl, with Xenons, climate, rear sensors, cruise and heated seats
I spend 90% of my time on town roads, so a lighter, smaller car fitted the bill well.
By the time I've finished "tinkering" it will probably lose another 100kg, so will weigh around 1100kg and have around 220bhp ( or 200bhp/ton, which would equate to the R having over 300bhp), which is plenty for a daily.
Just have to suffer the wait now!

I very nearly bought one a couple of months ago , only problem was couldn't get the pram in there  top car very nice

Hurdy: you can't be serious? The Polo just looks wrong.
If you are going for a cramped shoe box, there are better ones like the Renault Cleo Cup, The Citroen DS3 Racing, The Mini Cooper in JCW guise.
Please don't do a James Gould on us.
Get a Mk6, either a GTI, a GTD, an R or a GTI Ed35.
Failing that, get a Fiat 500 Ferrari. You might as well go super cramped.
-
Really?
I quite like it!

MKVI Golf GTI

Okay the boot is smaller, but I don't need a huge boot. The interior is big enough for me and I'm 6ft tall.
-
Listen: You simply can't tell people you drive a Polo. Are you a hairdresser?
Unless you can't afford a Golf.

If you saw my hair you wouldn't say that
I could afford a Ferrari IF I wanted one
There are a few reasonings behind the choice,
It will be 5dr and you can't get the little euroboxes in 5drs (elderly parents need to fit in) with decent power.
It is small enough for the SWMBO to drive - any bigger and she would never drive it. She didn't like the Lexus or the Golf as they were too big!!
Still VAG.
Plenty of parts out there for me to still be able to tinker with it
A Golf is like a Polo - just bigger and heavier, so if you need a heavier, bigger car get the lardy golf
-
What deal did you get Radek ? im considering a R buying 2nd hand or new, thanks.
Firstly, when I was buying the GTI 2 years ago I checked some good websites (drive the deal, broad... something and autoebid) and they gave me a range of discounts (about 2.5k). I showed that to the dealer and he lowered the price by 2.5k without a moan.
This time wherever I looked I didn't see any more than £500-700. That's what I expected. They probably have 1 allocation per branch, easy to fill. The waiting time was more important for me.
First the dealer said it would be 16 weeks which would be nice and then they would pay for ACC and rear A/B (about 1k). Plus supaguard for free (£300 but it's £20 on ebay + 3 hours of labour so not a big offer for me). I was very happy with that.
About the RVS - I asked him about that 5 times. He showed me a memo from the end of May saying that RVC was removed from order but only for CC, Sharan and something else. Not the Golf.
The order goes live on Mon so we'll see if it is accepted by VW.

Hurdy: How can I counteract your logic?
You'll probably make the Polo GTI so light that it will literally fly. Then you can name it Pogo!
Now go and buy that Ferrari. I would if I found a garage nearby to house it.

Nothing like a bit of deep penetration

I totally agree, but sadly these are fond mammaries.
Is it Red?
-
Polo GTIs are cool.
Much easier to park than a Ferarri too.
I think the only downside is the fact that they drink more oil than they do petrol.
Shame the supercharger doesn't give them a bit more low/mid range grunt like a Polo G40, or I'd have bought local dealer's demo car by now (nice white one with big spec).

No it will be Deep black pearl
Ah yes, mammaries are very fond (led)

I really wanted to like the polo GTI when we were looking for a second car but I don't understand the polo GTI standard spec theres some odd things missing that imo should be standard not options. When i spec'ed one up it worked out more expensive than my golf was for a similar spec and as the polo is not getting very good write ups from evo and such like i decided against it for the price.

^^^^^
The prices of new GTI's have rocketed now and the difference is larger. price wasn't a factor when I made the choice, size and doors was.
The criticisms levelled at the Polo were basically that the suspension isn't taut enough and that the steering is light , with not enough feedback ie. not GTI enough.
Curing the suspension won't cost me too much and that should help with the steering feel/feedback too. Once the car is remapped, believe me it will be a little belter.

I think our SWMBOs are related Hurdy. I had exactly the same comment about the Golf being too big and powerful with my wife, especially since the remap. So, I went shopping for a Polo and naturally started at the GTI. If you're putting elderly parents in the back, there isn't much space and it's not very comfortable on trips of any distance if you're in the back seat. This from someone who lives in the city and has had a Polo and has had that complaint. That said, they are fun cars and great for city driving.
@Asker - I'm sure you've seen the WRC Polo R that pushes out 300bhp. Now that's a hair dresser car!
-
@Alex: I would hate a blow job from that hairdresser. End up like a Polo or in this case a Pogo.
@Hurdy: Just pulling your plonker, sorry Polo, sorry Pogo.
-
@Asker: I keep telling people that it is okay to pull my plonker anytime if they are into that kind of thing
@AGB: The MIL is 5ft tall and the FIL is 5ft 2", so I could buy a shoebox and they would fit (with a little encouragement!)
-
Polo GTI is a good choice :afro: A more cohesive design than the inevitable compromise of a facelifted Mk5, lighter and with 220bhp would be a great car. Probably as close to a Mk2 as you can get these days.
Do they have torsion beam rear axle?
-
Yes they do.
-
Changing the subject a little bit - The dealer has confirmed RVC is not available. I'll leave it for a little DIY later this year as it seems it can be retrofitted

Absolutely it's too much money, it's got a 2.0 engine for god's sake! Unbelievable, the VW scene tax, it really is.
