Title: New tyres for my GTD
Post by: The Doc on 13 June 2011, 17:32
Just bought a full set of Goodyear F1 asymmetric 2's for my GTD - I'll review them once they have scrubbed in ;-)

And yes Asker they have massive rim protection - so much so that they look like 4x4 tyres

Pics to follow once it's been cleaned tomorrow

I figured they have got to be good for 22K. My old mk5 140 GT TDI used to waste the Bridgestones in 12,000.  So I am surprised at these.  I have been doing some long motorway trips mind.

11500 miles though yours is chipped and you probably drive it hard and brake hard?

18k is pretty good ajmoir36, I've read that Golf user usually get 15k out of front tyres.

For many years I've always used http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ though I do fit and balance them at work. They advertise them fitted but that will put the cost up. If you want to compare prices do a search on there?

Negative to be honest there Keith, Like I said 90% of the time I drive like a nun- my MPG should be a big clue there

I do like to drive at a constant speed as much as possible though which in turn tests the handling a lot which in turn requires little braking if any and lots and lots of momentum.

See Eco driving has its merits, fast corners (racing line is an efficient one), lowered cars and a slippy aero package.  Really not sure about bicycle tyres though!  When I want to stop I WANT TO STOP!

Saw a black 5 door GTD today with the 17"Seattle Shadows. Wow, I love those wheels and they appear as if they were 18" in size. I far prefer them to the 18" Charleston Shadows.

Regarding my unhealthy fascination with Rim Protection, my plastic Bridgestones came good again today and protected my Monza Shadows from kerbing.
Bridgestones have 5.5 mm rim protection, Continentals 5 mm rim protection and Goodyears 4.5 mm rim protection. The Russians say so!

Good bits:

Much quieter

Steering feel is better

Grip is better

Handling feels much better

Wet weather much better

In short better, faster, quieter and they don't scrabble for grip from standstill under full throttle anymore. The best part is the feeling if confidence they give you.

Bad bit:

They look like big fat tractor tyres, which kinda fits

I've got some new rims and tyres  for my disco bus too, I'll fit them next week and glue some pics up

Thanks for that but its hard to see the rimmage from those photos.  Needs a side profile, looking along the tyre/wheel.  I do like the Bridgestones rimmage as they have save my Vancouvers twice.

And yes Asker they have massive rim protection - so much so that they look like 4x4 tyres

Pics to follow once it's been cleaned tomorrow

Just ordered a full set of those for my GTI as well. They will be fitted mon/tue next week. I'm having the new tyres fitted on my Monza's shadows which are going back on the car
