Title: Mk2 8v tappets noisy
Post by: Bigdunc on 11 June 2011, 11:23
I have a mk2 8v gti pb engine, it's don't 140k

Just recently the top end has started to get noisy ticking quite loud.

I had the tappers changed about 6k ago,

Car never had head off that I can see in the paperwork,

Is there a way of making engine quiet again?

Car has had regular oil changes aswell

Thanks

i used engine flush adative on last oil change :(

its not all the tappets i dont think it sounds like just 1 or 2, ive added hydrolic tappet adative to try quiet them down but not seamed to have worked.

One of the galleries must be quite blocked then, or the new tappets were defective?

Could be a blocked oil pump? Have you looked at the oil pressure?

oil pick up pipe might be slightly blocked? take the sump off and inspect everything, mines doing the same thing but on and off so im thinking it a pump/pickup pipe issue

Pump was one of my thoughts,

Years ago I had a noisy mk2 16v and the garage used a full engine flush solution where u drain the oil and leve filter in then fill up engine with a 5l of flushing oil and leave running for 15-30 mins then drain and do oil change like normal, that worked well for that car but u can't seam to buy it anymore only the flush adatives.

Might be worth doing oil pump change anyway to be safe

I would drop the sump and check the oil pick up pipe.

will get in on ramps next weekend when i can get access to some as dont fancy taking sump off on the drive, for the price of a new oil pump and having to take the sump off anyway its prob worth putting in a new pump while sump is off anyway im guessing

I had to flush mine twice. It worked, 145k on the clock.

As already said, check oil pressure.

Could be a noisy injector or two. Put a screwdriver to your ear and the other end on each injector.

What engine flush is everyone using? Are u using the adative u add to oil or the 5l flush u drain oil and put flush in and run engine for 10 mins??

I'm getting my oil pressure checked in few days when mate bk from holiday

Yeh the injectors on these are pretty loud after a good few miles. Deffo worth checking too. Mine are too loud, might get some new ones.

Is there a way of testing my tappets with rocket cover off and cam still in place? Will the noisy one not have as much play as the others??

Will do the injector test tonight after work if weather nice :)

Done a oil change today with a better quality oil so gonna see how that goes, doing screwdriver on injectors they sound quite loud but not knowing what they should sound like I don't know if that's normal,

Had a problem with car starting today and found my dizzy cap centre pin is burned out could that be a prob with noisy engin??
