Title: which panel filter?
Post by: andynorfolk on 09 June 2011, 17:53
i need a new air box as mine was butchered when i got it and the muppet actually drilled holes in the top of the airbox as well as the bottom :S

so im gonna upgrade the filter too... i have used pipercross panel filters in the past and have always been good, anyone else got any suggestions? i've always though k&n was just a name to sell cheap rubbish under...

i had a k&n induction kit on my bravo 1.6 and it just did nothing... so then i ran a pipercross filter in the standard airbox and it seemed to run infinitely better

Just put a standard one from VWS in there. Fiver. Job done.

As above. If 16v, drilled front corner, snorkel removed, wing blanking trim removed,  £5 vws filter. In winter I run no snorkel at all jus a great big hole out front, in summer I run some convoluted cable duct attached to front of snorkel as cold air duct, but the snorkel itself is chopped off inside so I still get the noise with only a few less db's.

i want the airbox kept completely standard, but the standard paper filters are let's be honest fairly crappy and you need to keep replacing them...

reckon i might just go with a pipercross panel filter

K & N is a good choice.

It's an air filter FFS.  Save your money and get a standard one.

KnN or pipercross will be fine.. and lets face it they have a lifetime guarantee which standard ones dont.. even if it makes no difference i prefer them... my mk2 when finished im gona run a custom induction kit..

Get a standard one and change regularly.

Better filtration and probably higher flow than a wash and re-use one.

Especially after the K&N/Pipercross unit's  been washed a few time.

If you have a 16v airbox, you can have my k an n panel filter for a 5er and what ever postage is on top.

haha stick it on ebay, I'm after one also - you may get a tenner

I tend to stick with k&n's on bikes and cars just because I'm used to giving them a clean at service time.
Get the big recharge kit and it lasts for years. Been using them for over 20 years now never had any probs.

Paper filters are good and flow well, but only when new. The flow rates quickly drop.

got a pipercross one, along with a new unbutchered air box :D

cause apparently when drlling the airbox they thought it'd be good to drill the top too so unfiltered air was being drawn straight into the throttle body...

GENIUS!

A friend of mine took the plastic cone part out of my airbox and now at cruising speed i have a very annoying droaning noise a bit like.. warb warb warb warb... i'm sure its because of what he has done.. he threw the bits away  anyone else experienced this?

Anyone got a airbox for a g60 or golf if they are the same?? i dont like the noise

got a trumpet for a digi 8v box, if it'll fit its yours.

Post by: andynorfolk on 23 June 2011, 19:40
oops... i just cut the cone out in the new one i got as it looks like all it's doing is restricting the air flow... was that a stupid thing to do?  :undecided:
Title: Re: which panel filter?

the cone/trumpet should pull out without breaking (so can be replaced if you prefer it), depending how you go about it!  It is there to reduce noise primarily, and will have an effect on restricting flow.

Let me know if you get a bloody annoying droaning noise when cruising.. tunes have to be turned up to cancel it out, actually gives me a headache!

I know a 16v with trumpet removed and a few added holes doesn't drone, if you have head under the bonnet on tick over you can hear a humm from it, but other than that when you give it some it sounds great. So much so the tunes get turned down...

if you open up the airbox it has a trumpet inside it that the air travels in through, you'll know what we all mean if you open it up and remove the filter
