Title: Alloy Centre Cap Removal
Post by: Jimmymature on 19 May 2011, 20:44

My centre caps are crap and need replacing, I've found somewhere to buy them but not sure how to get them off.  Can anyone anyone advise how to do it please?

Cheers,

Jim

I think it's what people call white worm.  They have white marks that look like they are under the plastic coating.

Wheels off and push them out from behind.

Really? That's weird as someone said they had theirs nicked the other day and there's no way that someone would have taken his wheels off.

Thanks mate,

Jim

As there only plastic....... Drill a wee hole in the centre of the cap then hook them out with a screw driver.

Like that idea, i assume with the new ones i can just pop the new ones on without having to take the wheels off.

Actually I'd though of that in bed last night. If they are going in the bin that would be easier than taking the wheels off.

I changed one on one of my Vancouvers by driving a screw driver into it and pulling it out. And yes, the new ones do just pop in. If you are been really anal, make sure the VW is the right way up when the tyre valve is at the bottom. :nerd:

Yes the new will pop in easily. Quite a satisfying small job when you fit shinny new vw caps!

If the cars under warranty get the stealer to do it
Had all 4 done at various times on my Mark 5 . 2 down 2 to go on the Scirocco

I reckon it would be cheaper to buy them over the phone and get them to post them to you (or use TPS) than it would spend your own time and fuel going to the dealers for them to do it even if they were covered by warranty.

Yeah it's not worth my time arguing with them, I've seen them on eBay being sold by a VW guy at a really low price.

I'll order some tonight I think.

Definately would be doing a warranty claim myself.

Anyway, those are the correct ones BUT email him first as there are a newer type that are supposedly whiteworm resistant - make sure you get the right ones!

Cheers,

No idea! The ones that are white worm resistant will have a clear plastic type covering over the chromed bits. The ones you would get from a dealer if you did a warranty exchange would be the later 'better' type!

Right, after nearly an hour pissing about on ebay (I knew I'd seen them on there somewhere!)

I still reckon you should do a warranty claim, just to make sure VW get hammered every time they fit substandard parts to overpriced cars!

Edit, it must be the last three letters that signify the newer part: XRW

Pretty sure the centre caps go this way when the wheels have been cleaned with rubbish products, like if it's had a handjob on the local forecourt, the stuff they use is VERY acidic and with prolonged use will completely fook the paintwork!

No Jimble, no matter how you look after them they seem to get the white worm sooner or later. I've got a milky set sat in my garage that have only done a very low mileage, bought brand new a few years ago and spent most of the time on a shelf in my garage. When they were on a car they were only washed with decent-ish stuff and never had alloy wheel cleaners near them.

Spoke to the dealer and they will change them under warranty, they have them in stock and told me to turn up whenever I like!
