Title: GolfGTI Championship
Post by: tech1889 on 02 May 2011, 13:35
Well i went BTCC yesterday and really got the urge to wana go on a track.. Just read the golfgti championship site.. and the rules seem simple enough.. 90% standard 8v or 16v.. extinguisher.. 6 point roll cage.. harness etc etc.. all which can be done relatively cheaply from what i gather..

I love the mk2 and want another to just chuck around on a track.. but realisticly how much is this likely to cost to get a car to this spec ??

Any info much appreciated...

Buy something that's close on the spec and then sort it so it conforms.

This will be a lot cheaper than building something ground-up.

Is the Golf3 cup still on?  Might be the better one to enter - more cars about to choose from these days.

Yer will look at stuff thats close to conform and try and get a second hand roll cage or a custom one..

Yer the mk3 cup still running i beliebe but i not a big fan of mk3's lol

It'd be the one I'd go for, purely on the basis of accessibility.  Factor in that the engine development tricks in Golf2 series might not be quite as fully developed as in the Golf3 series.  You're more likely to build a competitive car, rather than being a tail-end Charlie.

Well I will have a look and weigh up costs of both etc..

Only when there's the likely posibility of the glorious destruction of the Golf3 in question.

Good point. Well put.

DH what did you mean about engine tricks in golf2 series ?? do you mean they can have a modded camshaft ??

No.  IIRC there's a control camshaft.

Let's just say from what I hear there are some engines created a lot more equal than others.

rules on modifying engines don't stop them being modifyed.  they just make it more expensive.

if your not allowed to remove metal from pistons to balance them you just collect LOTS of pistons ane weigh them the find an optimal combonation,  same goes for con rods.

tricks can be done to the metering heads to make them more optimal.

cylinder heads may have there ports sand blasted to clean them up

valve guides may have a littel trimming done before there fitted.

hell people may even bother to decode the prossessor in the ecu to adjust things like spark advance and rev limiter

yer sorry thats what i mean the control camshaft not a modded one  :nerd:

Danny that all seems a bit OTT for in essence not a lot of gain in my eyes is it worth going to them extremes of doing all that to the processor etc ??

Surely the golf3 series will just end up exactly the same people pushing the limits of what your allowed to do.. they already have control Dampers.. exhaust.. rollcage.. tyres.. 8v allowed 4 branch manifold and uprated control camshaft..

Identical cars, competing in a pack.  Who's going to win?  How much advantage do you need?

Surely the golf3 series will just end up exactly the same people pushing the limits of what your allowed to do..

Of course, but they've had far fewer seasons of 'honing'.

There's 2 MKII champs this year, can't remember the name of the other series but I went to watch a round at Castle Combe. It was set up as the original series was getting to intense for some. Was a small grid of 10ish cars at Combe but they're expecting 20+ at the next round.

Sounds about right - it did sound like budgets were starting to escalate.

Just seen this - shows how competitive and close the racing is.

what the actual f**k was the white car doing, there never was a gap open there. pure impatience ending in a very avoidable accident.

Known as a 'racing incident' I believe.

The black car shut down on him quite hard.  The experienced racers I've seen discussing it have said 50:50 blame and stupid idiots for knackering their cars.
