Title: Fancy a change
Post by: Neil gti on 29 April 2011, 18:14

Just putting feelers out to see if anybody interested, as you can't buy these anymore from Vwracing, also got 4 new Goodyear F1s

Neil, they are beauties. If I did not live in the UK and particularly in London, I'd go for them.
As it is, 18" cause me enough panic.

I think Gizzy might be very tempted.

Have you thought of the replacements? You'll have a hard job to beat those looks.

On a serious note, wheels + tyres should be worth upwards of £1500 ..... taking into account the rarity of the wheels.

Just realised, Ess_Three has 8 of them!

I'm still here..I've just been giving the Mk3 some love of late...which has now resulted in a broken engine!
Hmm...not good.

So, with GTI International rapidly approaching, time to spend a bit of time on the Mk6.
I machine polished it on Wednesday...so it's looking good.

These wheel whores go around and around in ever decreasing circles trying desperately to better the look of the 18" Monza Shadows and they fail miserably and beautifully. The Shadows are the best looking wheels by far. Nothing comes or will ever come close to their mind blowing looks as is evidence from the constant admiration they get. Rightly so.  :smug: :smug: :smug:

PS: I don't care about the weight of the wheel, only its look.

I didn't buy Neil's wheels, I replied to the mention of a different set of wheels

My car didn't come with Monza Shadows so I've got a perfectly good excuse for not having them and I like lots of different styles of wheels, so like to try them out for size. Women can do it with shoes, handbags and dresses - me, I dress like a tramp and like my wheels.....
A Golf on Monzas could be somene's company car but a Golf on different wheels is a statement that it's my car not a borrowed one.
Ive had loads of cars and have changed the wheels at least once on every one of them....

Seeing that you love wheels, when you have the time and the facility, it would be really interesting and helpful to compare the ride and handling between different sized wheels, especially the ride.
Your eloquent composition would be most appreciated.

I'll do it right now:

17s, look small, can't remember how they ride as only did a couple of hundred miles on them before they were hidden from the public gaze in case people thought I had a small thingy.

18s, look nice in a balanced way, ride okay, may put another set on the car one day...... :smug:

19s, make me look like I've got a massive labido, don't care how they ride as they look sooo sexy. No, they ride the same as 18s actually but feel a bit 'heavier'.

No dear it is not me, though I would love them.  I really am skint at present and as I seem to have a knack for curbing wheels at present I would live in fear of doing the same to those beauties.  I've got 3 gouges on my monzas at the mo but have no idea how they got on them.

Sunday:

Fished you in.

Hope they do a good job. Check everything very carefully. Bang the hatch down a couple of times and check its alighnment. Look closely at paint match. There should be no difference.

Have you got ACC? Ride could suffer with 19". But they look great. Now all you have to do is get Neil to get some new wheels ASAP, otherwise he'll have to give you a substantial discount. Don't let him get away with anything. He's been having a good time at our, especially my, expense.

Two weeks for a new bootlid? Thats rediculous!

It's not just the bootlid, there's two dents on the roof that you can't see on the picture plus you have to take into account the bank holidays.

The only thing ridiculous is the final price(£2560)!!

Bodyshops have become so expensive. They give one price for the Insurance Company and a cheaper price if you pay yourself. Part of the course. Quite shocking.

BTW: Are you going to sell the Monza Shadows?

Not sure yet, I going try and get them replaced under warranty first when I book it in for it's first service (starting to corrode around the centre caps)

That's shocking. My car was BW8/9. I had it delivered on 23rd March 2010. Mine are fine so far.

Seems there might be a challenger for number 1 wheel whore? :smug:

These wheel whores go around and around in ever decreasing circles trying desperately to better the look of the 18" Monza Shadows and they fail miserably and beautifully. The Shadows are the best looking wheels by far. Nothing comes or will ever come close to their mind blowing looks as is evidence from the constant admiration they get. Rightly so.  :smug: :smug: :smug:

PS: I don't care about the weight of the wheel, only its look.

The VWR alloys are like a one night stand that everyone wants rid of the next day but the diamond cut monzas are the ones you really love as they blind everyone in your local town in a summers day! Shame they weren't bigger!  size matters and we know it! :smug:

Yes but you live in the south  He lives in the north and the winter would have took its tole on them.

Hum Monza shadows.... :undecided:   :undecided:  :undecided:  :undecided:

(sundaydriver, if you do get them replaced, can you please let me know what sort of money you would be thinking for them if you decide to sell them, thanks Geoff.)

Snoops: If VW replace them under warranty, they'll keep the old wheels for checking by their technical bods. They did this with my rear bumper. I think most manufacturers operate in this way.

Snoops wants the replacements Asker, not the faulty ones.
The only reason I never bought a set of Shadows was the fact from previous mk5 experience I knew there would be issues with them. And as my car originally came with poverty spec 17s VW wouldn't honour the warranty if I tried to claim for substandard finished Monza Shadows at a later date once my second hand purchased wheels went the way they all do.
I'm sure what Geoff wants to do is get hold of a brand new 'second hand' set and treat them with all manner of potions he has to prevent them from going all milky in future. Then he can put his powder coated 17s back on in winter when it gets really grim oop North.

Edit: Looks like Geoff replied himself whilst I was typing!

To be honest the car only comes out at weekends and the wheels are always cleaned with bilberry wheel cleaner diluted 1:10 and then protected with a coat of RIMWAX so can't understand why they have corroded so quickly.

^ what he said.
I agree about the shadows as i had the same problems with the mk5 too. Its why i did not go for them But i keep looking at photos on an American site of cars like mine with them on and keep thinking...
http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16515
Its all down to if's, butts, maybe's, and price as i have watched prices since 2009 and somtimes regret not buying NeilGTIs when he sold his but other times i think mine are fine especially when you take corrosion and road conditions into account but other times  ..

Edit: I removed my post as yours made more sense.

I had a monza shadow repaced under warrenty a good year ago. VW kept the defective alloy. As summer is approaching and I need new tyres I just as well put the shadows back on the car. My shadows are pristine apart from the bloody marks Kwik-twitts put on them.

Sadly thats the way it is with this type of wheel finish. It is what happens when you try and get somthing to stick to a smooth surface. It lifts with time normally near the edges first. (same as if you paint something you need to key it first if not the paint lifts). The cold/heat cycle of winter/brake temp does not help due to expansion and contraction of different materials, or been stuck in water for weeks on end (snow)

Using your analargy, I am currently enjoying a threesome...with two sets of VWR wheels...and they are going nowhere until I'm finished!

You can keep your poorly finished, blinged up, soon to be rough as, OEM wheels.
