Title: uh oh, arl tappets
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 26 April 2011, 15:13
I whipped the rocker cover off today, and guess what? yep, scoring on cyl1 cam lobe  cyl 4 has a bit and 2+3 look ok, its hard to see the tappets but i can make out faint rings on no1.

I'm off to vw in a minute to get a quote on all the bits  :undecided: Any other suppliers i should be getting quotes from? The car runs fine at the moment but i have time off work at the moment so might as well get it done this week

Bits list i found-

Cam
Tappets
Bearing x10
Fitted bolt x8
Fitted Bolt x10
Tandem Seals x1

anything else? I have cambelt kit + water pump already

Steve, dont laugh!

sorry I had too :lipsrsealed:

I got my cam from this place (http://www.volksmaster.co.uk/) I also mentioned 'Tabs' of ukmivs sent me and they gave a nice discount. Think I paid £250 delivered. The cam comes from the smae factory as vw cam but not in a vw box.

Or you can get a kit from  AW Engineering (http://vwenginerecon.co.uk/) which supply you with a cam and followers for around £300

every thing you listed is what got changed on mine, guessing the tandem Seals is the cam seal? also want new oil and filter
parts wise your looking around £600 is you buy genuine and a cam from the link above and about £400 if you go with the AW Engineering kit.

it was my no1 and no4 exhaust followers which had pitting/scoring marks on them
this is what no4 looked like

and the cam lobe had worn alot

One good thing though is your doing it yourself and saving £400 in labour.
Good luck :afro:

whoa! yours went big time.

had an email back from aw engineering, £250 +vat for the kit. VW want £700ish  errr, no

the car feels and sounds fine at the moment but i think i'll change it all just for peace of mind.

Noticed the throttle body was full of crap as well, does a catch can help much?

Post by: Steve_PD on 26 April 2011, 18:51
vw charge over £400 for the cam alone!!
its £188 for the followers. cam seals £20 etc

yeah mine was pretty far gone :lipsrsealed:
I never fitted one. A catch can will stop oil going through the intercooler. But to stop the build up of crap in the egr you also need to remove it and fit an Allard delete pipe think you also need to get the egr mapped out to stop any fault codes

i blame you both 50-50 tbh

steve, are the uprated ones noticeably darker in colour than the old soft ones. Just want to know i'm putting the right ones in!

i can't be arsed with egr deletion, will just clean it now and then instead
Title: Re: uh oh, arl tappets
Post by: Steve_PD on 27 April 2011, 08:57
yeah the new ones should be black

wicked, just ordered the kit from awe. Regarding the 2 sets of stretch bolts, i'll get these from vw today as not included in the kit. I guess one set is for the cam caps, whats the other set for?  the pn's on the mk4 forum are out of date
Title: Re: uh oh, arl tappets
Post by: Steve_PD on 27 April 2011, 10:48
not sure if the awe kit is black as they make their own. nadlad on here used awe and was impressed with it.

are the other bolts for the injector rocker arms :undecided:
part numbers get changed all the time so most of the guides on here are out of date now

Awe use the same suppliers as vw apparently, and he says they are black, but we shall see! Think your right pn the bolts, theres 10 of one type and 8 of the other type is all i know.
Cheers steve

Post by: Steve_PD on 27 April 2011, 11:02
ah I thought they made their own. if they use vw suppliers they will be black.
the 8 will be for the rocker arms

sh!t the bed, vw want 4.50 each for the cam cap bolts and 6.00 for the rocker bolts! Quite tempted to use the old ones, thats what awe was saying he does when rebuilding. Bit dodgy but £100 on 18 bolts is a piss take!

1/2 way through the job report.

The first and last lobes have lost 0.3mm lift compared to the new cam!! lifters aren't too bad but a ring of doom is apparent on nunbers 1 and 8.

pics later!

hmm, it feels a bit flat since the job. I suspect the cam timing needs playing with. Anyone had a go at this? Was gonna use the trial and error method lol

Right, double checked the timing, all ok. Whipped the rocker cover off and the new cam has wear on the lobes already! Not happy, cant have done more than 20 miles on it

What did u set the injectors too? and how did u do it

u need two people one to crank it then when the cams at thits at the highest point you lock the nut up till its nipped up and then turn the allen head bolt inside the nut 180 degrees and then torque the nut upto 30nm for each injector. old setting was 225 degrees
Title: Re: uh oh, arl tappets
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 04 May 2011, 18:32
i didn't know you had to reset the injectors tbh, maybe thats why it felt a bit flat. Do you mean set it when the cam is at max lift on the valve? and turn the allen head cw or acw 180deg? cheers

Have spoken to awe and the cam's going back to them for 'inspection'

hers a pic of the new cam + tappets, notice the wear on no 2,3 and 6 tappets.

the associated lobes all look like this, and yep thats actually a point on the peak!

1) undo all the nuts on the top of the injectors

2) take drivers wheel off and crank cover off then turn the crank so that the cam is at the lowest part

3) when the crank is at the lowest point on each injectors starting from left to right  nip the the nut up till 'notable resistance' by hand and then turn the valve positioned inside the bolt back 180 degrees from closed positioned (cw) and then torque the nut upto 30n/m

4) do this for each injector ?

so 180 from closed position is striaght vertical down clockwise motion then torque the big nut up

Hi.

I am just about to fit an AWE kit this weekend and am a bit concerned after reading your posts!

What happened to cause it so quickly?

Did you use proper cam lube and the bedding in procedure?

How come they just gave you your money back so quick? Faulty parts?

What kit did you fit in the end?

Sorry for twenty questions but hope you understand my concerns!

Cheers

hi, sorry for late reply

I have a feeling a new fuel filter being filled up whilst the engine was cranking over did the damage, as i couldn't start the engine quick enough to run the cam in. Afterwards i bedded it in with engine oil. Too little too late! So my mistake i think.

I used all vw parts in the end, runs well, maybe a bit more power and the mpg has gone up 2 on average
