Hi just taken delivery of a Match 1.6 diesel with DSG box, so far so good well screwed together and gearbox great, However if you press the foot-brake, revs drop and gearbox does not pull. Sit at a junction etc for more than 30secs or more and I always apply handbrake, now for the BIG FAULT the handbrake is not connected to the electronics so the car revs, pulls and strains. Have just parted with a C4 Picasso with auto which was all sorted. Never had a chance to drive the auto as the dealers never had one, now I am stuck with this very annoying fault. "Oh yes it does that" says the sales guy the day after I collect it, Bugger

If you always apply the handbrake just push it into Neutral, annoying 'fault' fixed

Happens with nearly all autos.

Happens with nearly all autos.
Agreed on cars with manual handbrakes, but not on vehicles with electric handbrakes which his Citroen would have had
-
Just a bit disappointed as it would have been an easy fix taking a feed from a switch on handbrake.
Plus had several autos, they don't all pull and creep when handbrake applied.
-
Not a problem for me, just knock it into neutral as said above,
i never use the handbake at traffic lights etc, usually sit with foot rested on the brake and in neutral, slip back into D when ready and away you go

User error nothing else, leaving it drive is like trying to pull away in a manual car with handbrake on. Try the N

Err not quite more like manufacturer error, a minor thing that really annoys every time I stop. Oh well my fault for not insisting on a test drive in an auto.
A great car...................but.
-
It isn't an auto though!
Some normal slushboxes with a torque converter will be happy to take the abuse, but not a dual sequential 'box

Pet hate of mine and why i often have a head acre by the time i get home on a night because of lazy people not using the handbrake and so not thinking about the poor sod behind them they are blinding!!!!

100% with you.
The worst offenders are in Jaguar XKs. The brake lights are blinding.
-
Me too. Can't stand the drivers that sit with their foot on the brakes. Jeeps especially as it is more or less right at eye level. Dusk for me makes it even worse.
-
This is exactly the problem I am complaining about. yes you can "knock it into neutral" as suggested but that's a cop out and not really the answer because you might as well have a clutch and a manual if you have to keep doing that.

Shouldn't the title of this thread be 'Major error by car buyer who didnt check what he was buying'?.
i was genuinely expecting to see a story about VW making a 'major error' its very mis-leading....

Actually there was no models of this type to test drive from VW in the country from late November till I took delivery, so no I could not check what I was buying anyway.
Plus it is a major fault as far as I am concerned.
FROM DRIVING INSTRUCTION HAND BOOK
WHEN TO USE HANDBRAKE
1. When emerging at a T junction to turn right and you are waiting for a very long queue of traffic, use the handbrake to secure the car so that you don't creep into the junction before it is safe, but more importantly if someone hits you from behind your reflex might make you take your foot off the brake and you are pushed into the path of vehicles in the junction.
2. When you stop for pedestrians at a crossing (zebra, pelican, toucan), use the handbrake to secure your automatic car to protect the people crossing in front of your vehicle.
Oh well stuck with it now.......

34 sets of traffic lights on my commute home it has an effect. Your bling LEDs may look good to you but been stuck behind them when there on full at traffic lights is not a nice experience for the person behind you.

Geoff,
i didn't even think about that, just me lazy driving,
i will now think twice now when sat at the lights :embarassed:
-
For seven bloody traffic infested miles I had a ruddy XK in front of me. I eventually decided to get some petrol and so did he. He took the last pump available. I DID have a word with him, very politely, regarding the blinding brightness of his rears. He was such a nice man and apologised for the discomfort he'd caused and offered to use his handbrake more often.
I then parked right behind him when I got home! He lives on my street now and we have become pals. Funny world.

Thing is though, that quote from the handbook doesn't say don't keep your foot on the brake, just to use the handbrake to avoid creep.

Point taken, however still bit annoyed I had not been able to test drive and find this out, I thought the handbrake on the wrong side was the only thing I would have to compromise with, (better not get started on that one) main reason I delayed buying a MX5 till they moved handbrake to drivers side. Don't get me wrong the Golf is a great car and the DSG box very smooth its just.............

Absolutely!

Your wish.....

Apart from the obvious not using your handbrake and neutral at the lights - if you get rammed by some clown from behind, you will shoot off into what ever is in front of you. But doesn't the heat from the pads warp the disc/s after prolonged foot on brakes at lights sessions.
-
The OP should have got a manual.
-
The idea that someone sitting at the traffic lights, pulls up their handbrake and puts the car in neutral, to avoid blinding the driver behind them with their brake lights, is an alien concept down-under. The majority of Australian owned cars are automatics, and no-one is taught or encouraged to ever put at auto in 'n' at the lights. When the lights go green in Sydney, you need to move and do it quickly, to the next set of lights 400metres down the road, no time for putting your foot back on brake, selecting d, etc, etc.......... no Sydney drivers aren't renown for their consideration of others.

I got metallic black, mmmmm nifty

I guess Tiff Needell and Jason Plato would't agree with you on this one
How would they do handbrake turns in a DSG GTi ?
It would be good to have it switchable - on or off
-
How many times do you have to perform a hand brake turn in the "real" world ?
No reply to my question that I sent to VW

Every time it snows and I drive up the back of our works car park!

reply from VW, apparently I have an electronic handbrake!
Thank you for your recent contact regarding your Volkswagen Golf. Please accept my apologies for the delay in my repsonse.
Your Volkswagen Golf is fitted with the Hill Hold function as standard equipment.
This function prevents your car from rolling back when pulling away on a give way slope or during a hill start. The Hill Hold
operates for approximately two seconds. It is linked to the electronic handbrake system in your vehicle and works regardless of
whether the vehicle is in gear or not.
Volkswagen constantly reviews and improves our products, usually on the basis of customer suggestion. As such, I have forwarded
your email to our Marketing Department so that your comments can be included in this process.
I apologise that I am unable to be of any further assistance on this occasion.
Thank you for contacting Volkswagen UK
-
Have a read of your cars handbook you may have hillhold on your car. You don't need the electronic handbrake to have hillhold i think thats just the call centre person that there outsourced too getting confused. EDIT: Just checked hillhold is on all models now. Have a read of your handbook to find out how to operate it correctly.
-
I agree, mine has hill hold and the normal handbrake. Hill hold is std on MY11 cars
-
Yes mine has hill start, which I knew it would have. ( to be honest I would have expected any auto to have) My Smart Roadster had it when I bought it in 2007. Its the fact that the handbrake is not connected in any way I find a puzzle.

NEW MAIL FROM VW
Thank you for your most recent contact with regards to your Volkswagen Golf DSG. Once again, my apologies for the delay in my
response.
Your vehicle is fitted the hill hold function which is characteristic of the vehicle "pulling" against the handbrake as you have
experienced. If however you feel there is a fault with the DSG and hill hold function, I would recommend that you contact your
local Volkswagen retailer who will be more than happy to assist you in diagnosing the fault and offering a repair solution if
neccesary.
Volkswagen appoint a network of centres throughout the United Kingdom who are best equipped to answer and resolve any queries of
this nature, all of these centres have access to a dedicated Technical Department who can offer them additional support if
necessary.
