Title: Problems with our new family member: 8v MkIII GTi
Post by: GazTheHat on 22 March 2005, 14:16
Hi All,

I was going to post the problems in their own threads, but the amount of probs we have, might fill the whole site.? Before people say we shouldn't of bought it, we got it at a steal, just needs some TLC!!

The wipers. The rear one doesn't work at all. I saw it on once, when faffing with the MFA, but it stopped and i've never got it on since. Also, the front wipers, when off, don't reset, they stop wherever they were when you turn it off. So it's taking timing to get them to sit at the bottom. Is this a simple problem to fix? Something a non-mechanically-minded chap can do?? I've gotta save some dosh, but obviously want it fixed.

What with the fuel leak recently fixed - eyes on fuel guage for a repeat of breakdown, eye's on MFA checking cool info and now eyes on the wipers, i'm not lOOking at the road much!? ?

Clutch. When i rest my foot on the clutch and when fully depressed, there's a scuffing noise. Someone was telling me it's the clutch release bearings. Is this serious? Worth fixing if it means gearbox out and wot-not??

Changing Panels. 2 doors and the tailgate are rusting, the TG especially bad. Think it's this weather up here in Irn Bru country!! Is it easy enough to change a door and tailgate? Anyone know of a (VW) breakers up near Glasgow?? I need plastics and a few other things as well.....

Electric Sunroof. It only tilts, no slide. I kept faffing with it and managed to get it to slide about 1cm, with continous pushing/prodding the levers. I doubt i'll use it much, what with our weather, but it would be nice to fix. Do i just need a motor from a breakers?? Anyone had to replace one and remember the cost??

Wheel Alignment. I can see a front wheel is off, and the other has dodgy tire tread. Before i shell-out to get this sorted, i just wanted to know, as i'm planning in the near future to change the wheels (hopefully 17"s, currently has 15" OZs), is it worth getting the alignment done now, or waiting for the new wheels and doing it then? If i did it now would it need to be done again with new wheels??

I don't know if this is the associated. But at higher speeds 70+ there's greater vibration noise, coming from the corner with the "out" wheel.

Wheels. I've been reading that on 17's it tramlines quite a lot. The wheels on it are pretty scabby, so i would like to replace. Would it be best on 17's or 16's then?? I don't fancy rolling the arches, but also want to lower it onto them. I don't know if it's been lowered already?? (there's already mods on it......and it doesn't lOOk like a Paris Dakar entry? )? Do the Audi TT wheels fit directly on?? I've seen several golfs now with what lOOks like the TT wheels. Any other cars that have the same fitting wheels i could possibly source for a bargain??

Apart from the few problems, and in need of a valet, it's a cracking little car. Quite sporty, (nice to have that nip before 3000, unlike previous turbo'd motors), excellent handling - very positive and little roll. Ooses build quality and feels solid. I can see us keeping this car even when our new car arrives...!!

Thanks in advance for any help/answers, never owned a VW before (well don't know, it's the wifey's? )

- My guess would be a wiring problem in the right hand stalk or the connecting plug??

Clutch. When i rest my foot on the clutch and when fully depressed, there's a scuffing noise. Someone was telling me it's the clutch release bearings. Is this serious? Worth fixing if it means gearbox out and wot-not?? - It sounds like the release bearing to me, worth slapping a new clutch in IRO ?75 from Euro Car Parts.? There is a dedicated link to the Leeds branch on this site.

- Can't help on this one sorry.

- As above sorry.

- is it definately the alignment thats out?? The comment about "off" got me confused, a worn damper would cause uneven tyre wear as would damaged track control arms etc.

I don't know if this is the associated. But at higher speeds 70+ there's greater vibration noise, coming from the corner with the "out" wheel. - Off balance wheel or possible wheel bearing??

- When buying Audi wheels you have to ensure its 100 PCD and the correct offset.? A lot of Audi wheels are 112 PCD and can be made to fit but AFAIK its well expensive.? A cheaper option possibly would be a set of Anniversary wheels which are 16's and will go straight on.

- I've got one, my fourth Mk3 8v, its not as quick as some but its a very good all rounder.? The boss will have a hoot driving it, my other half has a Seat Ibiza GTi which is a polo with the same engine and gearbox as yours.? It flies, she loves it and has turned into a proper girl racer!

Thanks in advance for any help/answers, never owned a VW before (well don't know, it's the wifey's? )? Good choice in manufacturer!!

Hope that helps in some way.

In relation to your sunroof motor query wouldnt know what a good price would be but seen one for £50 on www.volkswizard.co.uk in parts section and a complete assembly for £80 excl. motor. Any use??

Thanks for the info. I'll have a shop around. Quite interested to see what the breakers have to offer and a few people are breaking their Golfs, so let's see....

That's good news. I thought it had to come out, by the response from the garage. He said it's best to just leave it, easier and cheaper. So naturally i thought it was a big job. I'll get a quote, see what he says...

On some golfs the clutch is of reverse type to conventional.
On the reverse type, the pressure plate is bolted directly to the crankshaft flange, the clutch friction disc in the middle, the flywheel fitted last. There is a pushrod that goes through the input shaft of the gearbox, when the clutch pedal is pressed the rod pushes against a packing plate which releases the pressure on the clutch pressure plate, this will release the friction disc from the flywheel and so disconnect the gearbox from the engine.
The release bearing on this type of arrangement is situated at the end of the gearbox, you can remove the end cover to replace it.
Conventional clutches have the flywheel fitted to the crankshaft flange, the friction disc, and the pressure plate fitted last. The release bearing on this type fits on the input shaft of the gearbox.
You can tell which type is fitted by seeing where the cable goes.
All hydraulic clutches, like the mk3 16v and vr6 have the conventional arrangement.
However if you look at mk2 gti 8v/16v and mk3 8v you will see the clutch cable connects to a lever which in turn operates the pushrod, so this lever will connect towards the end of the gearbox.
I hope that helps.
By the way i have fitted both types of clutches, one on a mk2 16v and on a mk3 vr6

The guy at the garage confirmed the gearbox does have to come off. Is he after more labour charges or can anyone else confirm this? I said just to change the whole clutch kit if the gearbox is off, one less thing to worrry about.

Streetmap couldn't find Mackean St and my A-Z is at home. I'll check that out later, but i think i know where you mean. Failing that it's an excuse to take the car for a drive

If the 8v has a cable clutch, which i'm sure it does, then the garage is lying to you.

With regards to the wipers if you change the relay (it has 19 printed on it) you should find this works, just done it on my mk3 cab and works a treat now
