Title: Question to people with 18" wheels
Post by: Jimp on 09 April 2011, 15:59
I've bought some 18" wheels for my mk5 (woo ) and a mechanic I know said that mk5s with 18's can 'tramline' a bit and wander if you're not paying attention. Is this true? I've never heard of it before.

What a load of garbage!

The only difference would be the depth of the tyre sidewall. The width of the tyre would still be the same. The sidewall is more compliant on a 17" wheel, but to say that the car wanders if you aren't paying attention is like saying you will crash if you go to sleep at the wheel!

Bigger wheels with lower profiles can tramline a little more.

Yes, but no more than any other car.

Bigger wheels with lower profiles can tramline a little more.
........i think it depends on the state of the road & how much tread there is left on the tyres.

I recently went from the stock 205/55/16"s on my Mk5 to 225/40/18 and there is more tramlining, just enough to be slightly noticeable.

No problems at all with tramling, the GTI at motorway speeds and above is very stable.

Tramlining or torque steer? The bigger the jump in tyre you may notice slight differences but the look outweighs any additional concentration needed

Heavy, cheap replica wheels with crap tyres will cause tramlining, but quality or OEM wheels with good tyres will be just fine.

Thanks for the info everyone. The wheels are OEM wheels and aren't very heavy or anything. Tyre profile will be a bit smaller so it seems like I'll be noticing a change from my 16's with big tyres  I'll post some pics when I have the wheels and other bits on the car :afro:

pffft. OEM wheels and very good tyres thanks. still get a little more tramlining.

Just to follow up on this, the wheels are on and I've noticed absolutely no tramlining or wandering, even on the terribly bumpy road to work  They look miles better than the old wheels too
