I love golfs, but I kinda want a carrado... :laugh:
A worry of mine if losing power as its a bigger car, how big an engine should I be aiming for to match the performance? Handling isnt too important to me cause I really dont thrash around anymore, I just like to be able to pull away and over take quickly when I need to.

A Corrado is not any bigger than a mk2 in real terms, based on the same floorpan.
2.0 16V is a good all round choice.

Yea 2.0 16v or G60 im sure the corrado would be a fair bit heavier than a mk2, i could be wrong though.

yeh sorry, bigger wasnt the best word to use, I mean heavier, ive seen a 2lt 8v, think thatl be noticably slower or will the slightly larger engine make up for the extra weight?

2.0 8v is arse frankly. Corrado is a bit heavier than the MKII but handles sooo much better and the driving position is like a well worn slipper.
Er anyway. 2.0 16v with KR cams as a minimum, g60 or VR6 are the better ones though.

G60 has too many issues with the superchager to be considered a day to day choice, VR is really nice but think of the fuel bills.

Really? I know a few peeps who've run standard G60's (and G40 polos) as dailys just fine. It's only when you start pushing them with smaller pulleys etc that they get a bit un reliable.

Was gonna say, what the hell are you talking about wayne? Sure you have to re-build them every 60,000 miles but a stage 4 re-build is only £350 if that. I say 'only' as having access to a supercharger for 60,000 miles is worth that price :grin:

Some can be ok but they still suffer lip seal problems and you then loose boost etc, yes you can rebuild them but I still think the 16v is still the best all round choice.
Also the standard G60 is only 24bhp more.

Don't be perverse, Wayne - the G60 is about the torque, not the BHP.
Provided you swap a new/properly rebuilt charger in on a regular basis it should be fine. It's the high-milers that have given the reputation for failure. People simply didn't expect to have to get a major item like that rebuilt as a service item (and why should they?)
It's indicative that VW didn't fit the 280mm rotors on the 16V, only the G60.
FWIW my vote would be buy an 8V and then transplant a 1.8T or if you want to be cheap (and keep the handling balance), an ABF.
I'd also budget for an LSD, but then I'm a fan of lots of traction.

Well I ended up buying an 2ltr 8v, and im very impressed, its not a great deal different when it comes to speed, if anything its faster, its more responsive for sure, and still good on petrol... I kinda miss the golf but its nice to have something different.

I went from a MK2 16v to a Corrado VR6 and never looked back. Fuel and parts cost a lot more in the VR though (and parts are expensive for Corrados in general).
The Golf is raw, but the Corrado is so much nicer to drive, and well balanced (now that the front engine mount has been upgraded!)

no they arent.
theyre sh!t slow, use lots of fuel, and use a mildly tweaked version of the not that reliable k-jet.
ive run 2x g60's as dailies for a total of about 2 years, and the only issue has been an engine mount (which i snapped on a trackday).
even a standrad, non pullied g60 with 160bhp feels massively better than a 16v. Then its just a case of a chip, pulley, exhaust and filter to see 185-200ish

What did your G60s deliver MPG-wise?
on a run, without the chip, i got 40mpg on the screen of the blue one (probably real world mid thirties). With the gwerks chip / pulley high 20's early 30's. pushing on dropped that significatly.
with the newman cam fitted, well, dont ask :lipsrsealed:
the red one with an sns 'Stage 5' was getting 25ish, but never really got taken on many long runs.

From experience, VR6 is a little sluggish low down in standard guise - the MK2 KR, though slower, felt so much more lively from the off, though the VR takes off from about 3.5k rpm. For all that, expected MPG around town and on the commute is about 25mpg, and it will settle in the low thirties for a quiet motorway run
G60's can also be modded pretty cheaply, whereas on the VR you need to get a Schrick manifold, 268 cams and a remap to make it come alive, or supercharge/turbo it if you can afford it. I've just put the Schrick in mine and it's transformed the car, brining in the power much earlier.
Costs-wise you have a charger overhaul every 60000 miles on the G60, but then there's the chains on the VR6 every 100000 miles or so which cost £1500+
