Title: Insurance question - please look :)
Post by: The K man on 20 March 2011, 21:54
im 19 and i drive a 1.6 mk3.

Do you think i would be able to get inusured on something bigger? a 1.8 etc?

Ive looked on the comparison websites and there just quoting stupidly high prices, however they did this when i got insured on my 1.6 but i found a cheap deal elsewhere.

I will ring up tomorrow and find out if my insurer will give me a quote or not but i was just wondering if anybody on here could give me there advice, or if anybody else was in a similar boat to me

Ramble over, thanks for taking the time to read

You can get insured on anything you want. Of course, the more powerful and expensive the more costly it'll be.

NCB, where you live, where you park, annual mileage, modifications, security all play a part in it as well as any named drivers.

Try Brentacre though, when I was 19 I paid £1300 on my 8v gti.

NCB is what makes the difference.
However, insurance costs have gone up spectacularly for first time drivers recently...

Holy Sh*t, thats some insurance premiums being quoted. I wont share what i pay but then again i am old  Why you would want to inusre something more powerful if thats the price of your 1.6 is crazy lol.

Anyway insurance is all about pricing the risk in accordance with a potential pay out, (pretty much the same as khare said) so I would be pretty confident that you could insure 1.8, 2.0 GTi etc somewhere but expect a pretty expensive premium especially if you are young (which that sort of premiums I am assuming you are) and have no NCD. Increasing your excess is always an option to reduce your premiums, another good thing is to add a mature woman to your policy (mum/gran/auntie etc) you will find that this will more than likely benefit your quotes.

Hope this helps

insurance is ridiculous.
My golf (16v gti) cost me 1300 this year... half way through the year i've now changed to a nissan200sx running 280bhp... And its only 300 more.

The joke is if i waited til my renewal to change cars it would have cost me 1800.

Moral of the story, insurance is GHEY! Ring your insurance company and ask them, and shop around!
Thats my only advice!

Spose it's the traffic lights, tarmac has gotta be dug up and replaced, they probably won't repair the probably torn wires so they'd have to be traced back and fixed, ground fixed back down, re tarmaced sections.

Plus whatever else was hit.

But Admiral love me for some reason :D
N17 which is less than a 5 minute drive from me is "Uninsurable" from some companies!

Dom, Try N17 as your postcode and let me know what you get ;)

Im 28 with 5 ncd and i live 20 miles out of london and got a quote for my mk3 8v and it came out at £590, Thought not too bad. Then had a brain wave. my mum and dad live in a tiny village near cambridge where fook all crime happens and 5 cars drive through a day and got a quote at their address. £355 it came out. So from now on i just get my insurance on their address.

The hughey bloke does seem particularly stupid.  It'd also be interesting to see where the car is registered to...

Incidentally, I'm 27 years old, with 6 years NCB and two convictions.  I live in a low crime area and have two cars.

The first is my mk3 16v GTI.  It's lowered on adjustable coilovers with banded steels on stretchd tyres, uprated headunit, leather interior, black vinyl roof, black grill badge, clear glass fogs/indicators and a Passat lip spoiler, all declared. That's £700 fully comp.

My second cars is my '73 Fastback that has been slammed, but standard other than that.  With an agreed value of £3500 and no ncb it's £154 fully comp.  Chuffed with that. Haha

try admiral, i was paying £1,450 on a saxo vtr at 18 with 0 ncb, now changed to a rover 100 1.1 and paying £1,100 (more smiles than the saxo!)
I could get insured on a mk4 1.8t for less than £2,000

Im 28 with 5 ncd and i live 20 miles out of london and got a quote for my mk3 8v and it came out at £590, Thought not too bad. Then had a brain wave. my mum and dad live in a tiny village near cambridge where fook all crime happens and 5 cars drive through a day and got a quote at their address. £355 it came out. So from now on i just get my insurance on their address.

Might be worth a go if you got family living in similar places.

Good idea, although a bit naughty

Admiral multi car can work out ok if you have more cars than drivers. We have a Puma, FTO, Golf and Skoda on the policy with just me and mrs driving. all of the cars are under £350 each and that includes business use on the skoda
