Getting a 1.3 that will I know be dog slow, but I don't want insurance costs for a GTI or tax for that matter. Would it be worth sticking in the GT MPI engine out of the mk3 Polo and then maybe making that 1.4 at a later date or even the 16v 1.4?
-
Why dont you just get a driver and make it look like a gti?
-

Ah ok sorry was reading it backwards. I would say possibly bore the 1.3 to a 1.4, give her a good tune up and slap on some high lift cams. You will have a nippy little whip then
-
Don't think the gains would make it worthwhile tbh.
-
But I might be able to get the engine and ancillaries free

Yes but all that work for what 10bhp (ish) plus your insurance will still go up.
-
If you want your mk2 1.3 to be faster, best bet, is'nt to buy a polo GT engine, but to buy a writen off/scrapped mk3 GTI, then swap it all over, and sell the shell of the mk3 to a scrappy for £100.
I have a mk2 1.3. But I didnt do this, I just built a nicely spec'd driver engine, plonked it in, sorted my sus/brakes/chassis, then went racing
As fast as an 8vgti ;)

A mk3? Im selling my 1.8. I hate mk3 and everything about them lol

A 1.8 is not the greatest, a 16v or VR might change your viewpoint.
-
Have you checked what the insurance costs would be with the polo gt engine? I bet they'll have your pants down.any excuse
-
Had a polo gt when I came off a ban 3 years ago. wasn't much as was on classic insurance
-
I fail to see the point in this. The base car is slow and the donor engine is slow - Why bother?
-
more reliable than a crappy carbed 1.3 thats why
I did also say I may put in the 16v 1.4
I'm no spring chicken so insurance isnt dear but I don't want the petrol costs or tax costs of a larger engine

Larger engines don't always = more fuel costs as they tend to be working less hard so can in some cases be better on fuel

The cost and time and effort involved in doing the swap, for lets face it, very little gain, would pay for a lot of fuel to run a more powerfull engined car.

Read again what I wrote. Swap everything from the mk3 GTI to the mk2 1.3. the gains would be very impressive, fair enough, you dont like it, but not only does it have good reliable power, 8 or 16, but it weights about 300-400 KG more than the mk2 1.3 !!!!
If you just buy an engine you will be back and forth to the scrappy for ever, as the 1.3 has not just a differnt engine, but differnt gearbox, driveshafts, gear linkage, engine mounts, radiator, list goes on and on.
And , excuse me if im wrong, but as mentioned before, the gains of replacing your 1.3 (mine was extremmly reliable) to a FI 1.4 gt polo engine, will be 25hp !!!!!
You gain more buy removing all seats, spare wheel, sunroof, headliner, door cards, rear wiper, etc etc

Their still going strong 20years on so cant be too bad, nothing to go wrong on em'

Not 25 BHP!
I need all that for 2 kids!
I won't be buying a GT engine..I'm getting a FREE donor car
-
Mind you..people going on about not much better BHP
What about the Mk3 that had an aircooled beetle engine fitted? Type2detectives one
-
Even if it is free still not worth all the work in fitting it.
-
Leave it as it and make it tidy, just wasting time and money IMO.
Not all about speed you know....................

Some people are so stupid there is nothing that can be done for them.
What do you actually want?
An injected unit of whatever size should give better economy than a carb unit, for the simple reason that it is capable of staying more in-tune and economical than a carb-unit.
The 1.4 16V is an interesting proposition as it'll probably be lighter than a 1.8 8V and should be nice and revvy.
Can't say I can get terribly excited about this sort of thing, mind. Lacks capacity.

The aircooled mk3 was done as a show car.
I have seen a mazda engine fitted in the front of an air cooled beetle ( pile of 5hite )
Thats the thing. Why do what all the other sheep are doing? Do something different and mad
Now if petrol was back below £1 I would just whack in a V6 or 1.8T
But being skint and 2 kids mums to feed (ok maintenance) I have to look at fuel economy, but with a little bit of poke.

Why has no one mentioned the "D" word?
-
If you want to do it mate do it. It will not effect anyone whatsoever on the forum lol

nope......just get a Mk3 polo. more economical, cheaper insurance and same tax....
The only argument for it would be if running costs didn't matter.....then you can get into all sorts of tuning opportunities.....

With respect a 1.3 Polo GT engine is not that quick in Polo let alone when it has a Golf to drag around.
