I've got a single stone chip at the front of my bonnet thats down to the primer so greyish white, an annoying blemish on what is otherwise a fairly decent finish! I bought a touch-up kit from the stealers which consists of two small bottles, one base coat (colour) and one clearcoat.
Rather than just blob it in the chip i was thinking of trying to do it properly,
I was thinking:
1)Clean out chip
2)Using a cocktail stick, put a small amount of colour in the chip
3)Dry paint with heat gun/hair dryer
4)Using a cocktail stick, put a small amount of clear coat in the chip
5)Dry top coat with heat gun/hair dryer
6)Flat with 3000 wet/dry paper
7)Polish area with compound
8)Seal area with JS109
9)Apply Wax
Do we think 3000 paper is the right paper for the job and can someone recommend a compound suitable, preferably a sample pack as i won't need much? all to be used by hand.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I wont touch them myself mate, unless your really good with stone chips , it can look worse if you dont get it right ?? I would rather pay someone to do mine.
-
By the sounds of it Jimble won't be messing around, I use the corner of a business card to apply mine when needed, those brushes they give you are bloody useless

Agreed, they're huge!!
the stone chip is really small tbh and i reckon as long as i use the right products it should be ok, hopefully!

what are you saying? I saw the results in the flesh and they were very very good, much better than some 'professional' paid for jobs I have seen
one of my regulars has a passat that he paid £300 for 'stone chip' protection from the stealers... so far all i can see is that it involves him taking his car back every so often to have a blob of paint dripped onto his car... it looks terrible

My god your good, thats a very good crack at what looks like a horrible mess of scratches, hat off to you sir
..........and here's me crying over a small chip on my disco's bonnet
Guy, I'd bet my balls that Steve wasn't being malicious above
For £300 quid I'd expect a forcefield.

his work is superb by all accounts... well worth it if you think of the value it could add to your car and the amount of work it takes

Yep I agree, but that is alot of money too spend, some people dont care so much about swirls on the paint etc etc

To be fair I only think it's pricey for that service ie "dripping paint onto chips"
I've had a few of my Land Rovers / Range Rovers / BMW's and Porkers painwork corrected and it costs a fair few more quid than that but the results speak volumes.
-
I'm not going to get someone in to do it as there is only one small chip, if there was more i'd consider it. So can someone tell me what stuff i need please as per my OP?
cheers
-
If you're going for the DIY route on stone chips i must admit that I found the Halfords kits to be better than the main dealer ones for the simple reason that the applicators on the bottles are like needles and are very fine, much much finer than those poxy brushes.
-
I've already bought the kit from the stealers, was gonna use a cocktail stick or something similar, perhaps a modeling brush, it's the polishing compound and wet n dry paper i need pointing in the right direction of really?

yes i am interested by what you meant by that steve, yes i am a pro valeter/detailer with 16yrs experience, i do not claim though to be a pro at stone chip or scratch repair, it was something i tackled on my golf because the quote i had to get it sorted was way more than i payed for the car so i did it myself, and as guy said it was done to a very good standard which he has stated from seeing my car in the flesh.
-
Had a quick look at your repair thread yesterday mate, looks a tidy job! just tried to have another look and your piccies have gone.
-
Jimble mate, have you seen those kits at sh!ttly halfords ?? they are chip repair kits and on the very end is like a needle with a tiny hole in, these are bad boy!! cant believe nobody else does their touch up kits this way, absolutly perfect for small stone chips i did my full front bonnet, as i had loads i wet sanded it, this was around 3 years ago - stll looks mint, the colour match was spot on too. deffo worth a look.
They are in containers with a primer stick, colour stic and top coat, all in like a thin plastic container with clear lid/silver base

I'm saying its job i would never touch, it needs a pro to do that type of job , and hes done a brilliant job

I'll have a look next time i'm near a halfrauds mate, what paper and polish did you use bud?
-
i used a 1500 paper, the polish was chemical guys Scratch B Gone and then jetseal, and a coat of wax on top
This was way before i had a rotary, i used PLENTY of water to keep any sandpaper marks to a minimum.
you could attach a small bit of sandpaper to the end of a pencil etc so u only rub the small area your working on
-
Nice one, good idea with the pencil! :nerd:

I would have thought 1500 grit paper is a bit too abrasive for that? I wetsanded a couple of scratches in my bonnet last night on my MK5 with 2500 and then 3000. I then polished it up with Menz S100 on a Hex-logic polishing pad and it still took 2 sets to get the wetsand marks completely out! I have to say it made me nervous as its the first time i'd tried it.
Polishing them out by hand (i would have thought) will be really difficult. If you live near a forum member im sure they would help you with the polishing! If your anywhere near the Wigan/Parbold area i'll help you out for a couple of beer tokens!
