Thanks mate

Yeh robs my lover lmao :p

Good cars for dogging then?  joke

I'm not the biggest fan of MK3's but how can you not like that!  If it were mine i'd be tempted to ditch all the aftermarket stuff on the outside and make it a proper little sleeper!
Title: Re: Supercharged vr :)
Post by: ian_GTI on 08 February 2011, 19:25
I was never there biggest fan but I has a 2.0 8v gti as my 1st car and aways wanted a vr for the sound :) and since rob bought his and another friend just bought a vr as well I fall in love all over again lol

Ur right the aftermarket stuff is going but because of the brakes the standerd bbs's won't clear them so it will just be clean on a nice set of rims

As for dogging it's got full leather so it's wipe off :)

Not a fan of the wheels, might look a little better if the centre's were color coded to the rest of the wheel. Loose the two badges at the back too.

Aaaah the 383 stroker engine mmmm.
Would love to see some pics if you have any,via pm?

Back on topic with the vr,have you had any problems with the diff/box at all?Im wondering whether to go for a peloquin diff or leave it standard. Are you running a standard clutch?
Title: Re: Supercharged vr :)
Post by: ian_GTI on 10 March 2011, 15:32
Yeh no worries

The box and diff are fine but the standerd clutch takes a beating and slips on full throttle

I'm going down the v5 box route as it has kinda LSD in it already and the 6 speed will be nice for motorway driving as the ratio is a bit short for my liking

Finished fitting the engine mounts today (wow what a pain in the ass they are)

Fitted the oil pressure gauge & boost gauge (forgot to take a pic)

Also fitted the new oil cooler, header tank, crack pipe, thermostat and housing

Also did a full service all gen parts and gearbox oil

And also used a polo drain bolt as the vr6 one got damaged on a speed bump so a flush fitted one should stop that happening again

BHP - 258.9
Torque - 193.3

It was nice to get a power run so I can see the diffance once the new lump goes in :)

I will update on the new engine once the project starts :)

Yeh I know to be honest I was happy how well it ran anyway as the map on it is far from the best, it's over fueling like mad and a few other things ain't quite right that I already knew about. The plan was to go stand alone but as the engine is coming out that's no longer needed :)

Well here it is the new car:

It's a 1999 mk3.5 golf cabriolet 1.6 8v

So started today at 8am to start taking the engine out of the VR

And was joined by rob and keV at 10am

Finished about 9pm and all that's left todo is a bit of piping up and some wiring

We managed to get the engine out of the VR

Swap over the gear linkage and clutch

Fit the VR lump in the cab and also bolt the 1.6 in the VR just to get out the way

Also managed to swap all the engine looms over but I will have to change alot of it since it has the mk4 front end

Few pics

Title: Re: Supercharged VR6 now been transplanted in to a cabriolet
Post by: ian_GTI on 05 July 2011, 18:49
Yes yes and yes mate lol

but they don't make a 3.5 cab so there ain't that many around,
I've always wanted one,
think how much we all love the sound of the VR then think of how much better it will sound with no roof
I'll just have to make it faster
And the main one I did it cuz I wanted too lol

Pros out do the cons in my eyes mate :)

I get it. Get a pic of the 1.6 in the other bay.

Looking sweet tho mate.

Have you had it running long?

Can't you just swap the chips in the keys?
Title: Re: Supercharged VR6 now been transplanted in to a cabriolet
Post by: ian_GTI on 05 July 2011, 19:47
Only finished the wiring today mate :)

It started the cut out because the immobiliser cut in

Not as simple as swapping the chips as I decoded my old transceiver because I lost my only chip,
So when I fitted the ecu to the mk4 all was ok and I thought I'll just swap the boxes over but there different. Also I would like the immobiliser working again so I'll bring the magic box of tricks home with me from work tomorrow and get it all coded up.

Only things left to do are

Splice mk4 head light loom with the mk3 loom

Bleed brakes

Fit new n/s drive shaft

Bit of a tidy round the engine bay then it's good to go

not 100% on why you are breaking the dragon green beast (i liked it)... but I cannot argue with your justifications... 'because I wanted to' is a great rationale

Prefacelifts were weird. 2l, 4 stud, brakes must have been 256 (as were under 14" wheels), ABS and discs at the back.

What this man says ^^^^  Top work. :afro:

We don't always do things because they are optimum, we do them because we want to....  People get bored of things too, green mk3 was fine, but this is different.
Title: Re: Supercharged VR6 now been transplanted in to a cabriolet
Post by: Jack3559 on 06 July 2011, 11:56
With a VR6, it's all about the noise.

What better way than to take the roof off?

Might be heavier and slower... but if you wanted something light and nimble, you wouldn't get a Mk3, it's not a performance car.
Title: Re: Supercharged VR6 now been transplanted in to a cabriolet
Post by: SoundillusioN on 06 July 2011, 12:37
  All this sh*t about slower... Slower than what, slower than the green donor (slightly) but that's it, it's a supercharged VR FFS... it's still faster than a standard VR, faster than any standard cabby...
Title: Re: Supercharged VR6 now been transplanted in to a cabriolet
Post by: Jack3559 on 06 July 2011, 12:53
Exactly!

A charged VR6 cabby on Borbet A's?

I'd rather be 0.006 seconds slower to 60 than the hatch because it'd give people a better chance to look... and more importantly listen.

Still have alot of stuff to do on it but it's getting there

Few plans are:
Short runner intake manifold
6 branch
276 cams
Charge cooler or water injection

A few bits to tidy on the body work and probably going to get the rub strips done silver and a 4motion from splitter

Fitted a temp exhaust today as the 1.6 exhaust was making it loose loads of power

A friend of mind had a spare stainless exhaust I could use but when we went to fit it we found out it was for a early mk3 and none of the brackets fitted and it dident line up,

But a few hours later after a bit of work with welder a grinder and a bit of work it fitted

It's a bit big for my liking but it's only untill I get time to get a new one fitted

The plan is to have it compelely hidden and the cut out in the bumper filled

Bit more stealthy and one less thing to clean lol

Made a start fitting my us rubstrip today
A lot easier said then done lol

I got one side lined up only to notice it was to short

So the plan is was to cut the extra out of my old one and extend the us one

Pic of one side lined up

Pic of extra bit glass fiberd in place

So the plan is to start rubbing it down tomorrow add a bit of filter and away I go

I'm also in the process of colour coding the rub strips all round

Well no lol

The dash has to be trimmed to fit

And I have to change the fan blower to a mk3 climate controlled one, then make a loom so the TT dash controls contol the mk3 blowers

Apart from that yeah easy lol

Had a couple of hours spare today so I removed the old dash

Wired up the clocks (sort of)

And just placed the top of the dash to see what needs tobe modded or removed

If only that was ture lol

It's sitting to low so needs to be raised

The mk3 crash bar needs alot of cutting to get the lower panels to fit

I have to move the handbrake

Change the heater boxes

Then wiring lol

Yep got 95% of it working

The rev counter doesn't as it's can bus and the fuel gauge works backwards lol apart from that it's getting there

What's the differnce in the shifters, I've got the TT gator to go on was just hoping it would fit with a bit of modding

02J shifters are alot better. More precise. But I suppose the gaitor and knob can be fitted with a jubilee clip. Same as mk4 on a mk3

Looks mint!

How can u sort the rpm counter? Fuel gauage shouldn't be too bad should it? Or am I totally wrong and underestimating the work? :)
Title: Re: Mk3.5 cabriolet VR6 supercharged (TT dash getting ready to fit p21)
Post by: ian_GTI on 31 August 2011, 21:22
Fuel gauge ain't to bad but when you fill the tank up the gauges will beep etc

I'm going to see if I can fit a mk4 fuel sender in the tank and that should make it go the right way

Rev counter I have a plan for but that will be reviled in time :)

Also the gauges are looking for sensor inputs I don't have like oil level etc so so there beeping like mad

I'm going to see what I can bypass if not I will have to find what resistance each sensor is that it's looking for and just put a resister in to trick them into thinking that the sensors are there (if that makes sense)

Title: Re: Mk3.5 cabriolet VR6 supercharged (TT dash getting ready to fit p21)

The only bits left are the n/s bit the mounts the heater box and around the steering column, then I made up some reinforcing braces to go in the middle

So yeah not alot left of in :)

Title: Re: Mk3.5 cabriolet VR6 supercharged (TT dash getting ready to fit p21)
Post by: ian_GTI on 02 September 2011, 21:41
In one word yes lol

The only problem I have to sort now is the dash is shorter around the the a pillars so I'm either going to fiber glass around it or make some alloy plates to cover the holes as the polished alloy should go with the other bits on the dash
Title: Re: Mk3.5 cabriolet VR6 supercharged (TT dash getting ready to fit p21)
Post by: tech1889 on 02 September 2011, 21:43
i would go for polished as fibreglass you even look at it and it explodes lol

Yes up and down works and the temps works

But where I had to mod the air ducts on the side, they are a bit weak but I'm going to mount some tweeters in side them anyway to keep the dash looking clean

The charger is now coming off to be sold (after £2,200 pm me if intrested)

Now going down the turbo route looking to get 325 - 375bhp so the engine will be coming out for a rebuild and a few new toys added

Will add pics when work starts
