Thanks mate
Yeh robs my lover lmao :p
Good cars for dogging then? joke
I'm not the biggest fan of MK3's but how can you not like that! If it were mine i'd be tempted to ditch all the aftermarket stuff on the outside and make it a proper little sleeper!
-
I was never there biggest fan but I has a 2.0 8v gti as my 1st car and aways wanted a vr for the sound :) and since rob bought his and another friend just bought a vr as well I fall in love all over again lol
Ur right the aftermarket stuff is going but because of the brakes the standerd bbs's won't clear them so it will just be clean on a nice set of rims
As for dogging it's got full leather so it's wipe off :)

Sweet deal :)
Not a fan of the wheels, might look a little better if the centre's were color coded to the rest of the wheel. Loose the two badges at the back too.

Ummmm why change of Reg? You took chavvy stuff off then put a "private" plate on?
Hate those wheels! Looked better with the first set!
So what power does it put out?
-
We need a video and we need one now!!!
-
That supercharger looks big as said love to hear the sound of it  Private plate looks cool by the way and the current wheels look far better than the original ones looking good buddy

Nice motor!
But what is that under the sheet,im seeing V8 Hot rod!
I will be building a nice 1932 3 window coupe when im 35-40
Anyway i may be bugginf you soon regarding routing of pipes for the supercharger and maybe a few more pics of certain engine bits if thats ok
-
Its a 1950 ford pop with a t-bucket body and a 6.3L small block chevy lump puts out abot 550bhp
-
Aaaah the 383 stroker engine mmmm.
Would love to see some pics if you have any,via pm?
Back on topic with the vr,have you had any problems with the diff/box at all?Im wondering whether to go for a peloquin diff or leave it standard. Are you running a standard clutch?
-
Yeh no worries
The box and diff are fine but the standerd clutch takes a beating and slips on full throttle
I'm going down the v5 box route as it has kinda LSD in it already and the 6 speed will be nice for motorway driving as the ratio is a bit short for my liking
-

Will a 6spd box fit a VR :undecided:
-
I'm not 100% sure but I'm sure I've seen it done
It will require a bit of research :)

Braided lines look really good.

My boost and oil pressure gauge turned up today
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/2df7f017.jpg)
I already have a pillar mount from the old mk3 but don't really want them there so I think i will make a holder for them but there go on the piller for now
-
Popped into tps this morning to grab a few bits :)

Few more parts turned up today
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/cd3d15c1.jpg)
-
Finished fitting the engine mounts today (wow what a pain in the ass they are)
Fitted the oil pressure gauge & boost gauge (forgot to take a pic)
Also fitted the new oil cooler, header tank, crack pipe, thermostat and housing
Also did a full service all gen parts and gearbox oil
And also used a polo drain bolt as the vr6 one got damaged on a speed bump so a flush fitted one should stop that happening again
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/31fd064b.jpg)

BHP - 258.9
Torque - 193.3
It was nice to get a power run so I can see the diffance once the new lump goes in :)
I will update on the new engine once the project starts :)
-
What power did it make? It's pretty hard to make it out on the graph :undecided:
-
258.9 bhp and 193.3 torque
-
258.9 bhp and 193.3 torque
Excellent power, torque seems a little low.
-
Yeh I know to be honest I was happy how well it ran anyway as the map on it is far from the best, it's over fueling like mad and a few other things ain't quite right that I already knew about. The plan was to go stand alone but as the engine is coming out that's no longer needed :)
-
Not the best pics and the ride hight has got to be sorted A's this was just a trail fit

Yeah not something I would do but then some people just want a car that launches not corners... anyway, nobody knows what it is, for all we know it could be going in the back of a beetle.
-
Supercharged vr beetle. Now that's a project I'd like to see happen
-
Supercharged vr beetle. Now that's a project I'd like to see happen
Someone's done an old skool vr beetle before but doubt there's a supercharged one.
-
This is what's coming out to make way for the vr lump
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/a1fd58d9.jpg)
No where near as as cool as a mk1 sorry
-
Hmmm not sure on what that's from... polo maybe???

-
Looks like another mk3 tbh.
Nah, what would be the point in that, unless this mk3 is proper fooked.
or newer caddy van/pickup?
yeah could be, be a bit different that.
-
I'm with Shaun, i'm thinking Polo!
-
MK3 type bulkhead with the scuttle, ABS pump location and the plastics along the top. Doesn't quite look like a MK3 though.

Well here it is the new car:
It's a 1999 mk3.5 golf cabriolet 1.6 8v
So started today at 8am to start taking the engine out of the VR
And was joined by rob and keV at 10am
Finished about 9pm and all that's left todo is a bit of piping up and some wiring
We managed to get the engine out of the VR
Swap over the gear linkage and clutch
Fit the VR lump in the cab and also bolt the 1.6 in the VR just to get out the way
Also managed to swap all the engine looms over but I will have to change alot of it since it has the mk4 front end
Few pics

Big thanks to rob and kev for all there help today
-
Epic day
-
Cracking work :afro:
-
Fired it up today :)
Just need to get the key coded to the ecu now
-
Strong work
-
MOR PICHERS!!!
-
Will update some this week
-
isnt this a step back ? wont a 3.5 be heavier than a 3, and not handle as well :undecided:
the green car looked cool...
-
Yes yes and yes mate lol
but they don't make a 3.5 cab so there ain't that many around,
I've always wanted one,
think how much we all love the sound of the VR then think of how much better it will sound with no roof
I'll just have to make it faster
And the main one I did it cuz I wanted too lol
Pros out do the cons in my eyes mate :)
-
Strong work man  like it!
-
I get it. Get a pic of the 1.6 in the other bay.
Looking sweet tho mate.
Have you had it running long?
Can't you just swap the chips in the keys?
-
Only finished the wiring today mate :)
It started the cut out because the immobiliser cut in
Not as simple as swapping the chips as I decoded my old transceiver because I lost my only chip,
So when I fitted the ecu to the mk4 all was ok and I thought I'll just swap the boxes over but there different. Also I would like the immobiliser working again so I'll bring the magic box of tricks home with me from work tomorrow and get it all coded up.
Only things left to do are
Splice mk4 head light loom with the mk3 loom
Bleed brakes
Fit new n/s drive shaft
Bit of a tidy round the engine bay then it's good to go
-
well i must say this is fairly epic work!! all done in record time too by the looks of things!
now.. the lights you took out of the dragon green... even though you thought they were chavvy... were they Hella Celis? IF so they are worth quite a bit so hope you didn't bin em?
not 100% on why you are breaking the dragon green beast (i liked it)... but I cannot argue with your justifications... 'because I wanted to' is a great rationale
10/10

but they don't make a 3.5 cab so there ain't that many around,
I am confused they did make 3.5 cabs.

did they make a 3.5 cab VR6 as it suggests to me that was what he was getting at?
-
Yes sorry I mean vr6 3.5 cab

Nope all were 1.6 / 1.8 or 2.0 even preface lift.
-
Prefacelifts were weird. 2l, 4 stud, brakes must have been 256 (as were under 14" wheels), ABS and discs at the back.

Even facelifts stayed 4 stud.

Mines now 5 stud with 312mm up front

you swap the brakes over too? sensible!
-
Yeah, bloody good idea!!
What are you thinking wheel wise?
-
I just managed to get my Borbet A's to clear them
I will get some pics up as soon as I've sorted the ride Hight and gave it a good clean
-
well i must say this is fairly epic work!! all done in record time too by the looks of things!

What this man says ^^^^ Top work. :afro:
We don't always do things because they are optimum, we do them because we want to.... People get bored of things too, green mk3 was fine, but this is different.
-
With a VR6, it's all about the noise.
What better way than to take the roof off?
Might be heavier and slower... but if you wanted something light and nimble, you wouldn't get a Mk3, it's not a performance car.
-
 All this sh*t about slower... Slower than what, slower than the green donor (slightly) but that's it, it's a supercharged VR FFS... it's still faster than a standard VR, faster than any standard cabby...
-
Exactly!
A charged VR6 cabby on Borbet A's?
I'd rather be 0.006 seconds slower to 60 than the hatch because it'd give people a better chance to look... and more importantly listen.
-
Took a few pics today as rob gave me a hand giving it it's first clean and lowering it a bit :)

Not really, as soon as it's fired up, the game would be given away!
If I had to have a mk3 (3.5), this is the one I would want.... Awesome.
-
Personally, I'd joey the headlights and tint them, it would fit in better with the black grille and badge.

That would look good TBO :afro:

Must say; you and Rob are really stepping it up for the Mk3(.5) boys.
Proper jealous.

Very nice and not overdone in any way

Thanks for all the comments guys
Still have alot of stuff to do on it but it's getting there
Few plans are:
Short runner intake manifold
6 branch
276 cams
Charge cooler or water injection
A few bits to tidy on the body work and probably going to get the rub strips done silver and a 4motion from splitter
-
Fitted a temp exhaust today as the 1.6 exhaust was making it loose loads of power
A friend of mind had a spare stainless exhaust I could use but when we went to fit it we found out it was for a early mk3 and none of the brackets fitted and it dident line up,
But a few hours later after a bit of work with welder a grinder and a bit of work it fitted
It's a bit big for my liking but it's only untill I get time to get a new one fitted
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/0f8f3bef.jpg)
-
Does the job for now... Perhaps a single pipe of the same diameter?
-
The plan is to have it compelely hidden and the cut out in the bumper filled
Bit more stealthy and one less thing to clean lol
-

Made a start fitting my us rubstrip today
A lot easier said then done lol
I got one side lined up only to notice it was to short
So the plan is was to cut the extra out of my old one and extend the us one
Pic of one side lined up
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/e7a18a68.jpg)
Pic of extra bit glass fiberd in place
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/e5afd48b.jpg)
So the plan is to start rubbing it down tomorrow add a bit of filter and away I go
I'm also in the process of colour coding the rub strips all round
-
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/634be62b.jpg)
-
Ready for paint
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/b779bc25.jpg)
-
So the side markers are in different places on each side?
-
Awesome.
It's the little details that count.
-
So the side markers are in different places on each side?
No after I noticed it was to short I centred it then added the extra bits on each side
-
First trail fit it still needs abit of trimming but its getting there
Also colour code the rest of the strips

looks sooo cool, bet the vr noise sound so much better with the roof down
-
Went on a little trip today to pick this up
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/2a160432.jpg)
Think it will freshen up the inside of the car nicely
-
Nice. Gunna look sweet
-
Going to look awesome :afro:
-
easy fit ?
-
I love the titty dash, going to look sweet
-
easy fit ?
Well no lol
The dash has to be trimmed to fit
And I have to change the fan blower to a mk3 climate controlled one, then make a loom so the TT dash controls contol the mk3 blowers
Apart from that yeah easy lol

Piece of cake then... :D Good luck man, looking sick :)
-
Had a couple of hours spare today so I removed the old dash
Wired up the clocks (sort of)
And just placed the top of the dash to see what needs tobe modded or removed
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/2fe6a722.jpg)

-
Doesn't look like too much fettling will be needed?
-
If only that was ture lol
It's sitting to low so needs to be raised
The mk3 crash bar needs alot of cutting to get the lower panels to fit
I have to move the handbrake
Change the heater boxes
Then wiring lol
-
Will look ace when finished :afro:
-
Got the dash mostly in and working today

Looking sweet dude!
-
Not too sure on the dash my self, never been keen on putting other cars dashes in! but props to you for getting that in and working! I know they're not easy to do !
-
Looks awesome
-
Nice work. Is everything working. Electrically?
-
very good work there... like this thread a lot :afro:
-
Very smart looking cab!
Made the tt dash look easy work! big improvement over the mk3 one
-
Also looks like it will be worth changing over to an 02j shift tower and shifter, along with a TT lever to finish the effect.
-
Nice work. Is everything working. Electrically?
Yep got 95% of it working
The rev counter doesn't as it's can bus and the fuel gauge works backwards lol apart from that it's getting there
What's the differnce in the shifters, I've got the TT gator to go on was just hoping it would fit with a bit of modding
-

02J shifters are alot better. More precise. But I suppose the gaitor and knob can be fitted with a jubilee clip. Same as mk4 on a mk3
-
Looks mint!
How can u sort the rpm counter? Fuel gauage shouldn't be too bad should it? Or am I totally wrong and underestimating the work? :)
-
Fuel gauge ain't to bad but when you fill the tank up the gauges will beep etc
I'm going to see if I can fit a mk4 fuel sender in the tank and that should make it go the right way
Rev counter I have a plan for but that will be reviled in time :)
Also the gauges are looking for sensor inputs I don't have like oil level etc so so there beeping like mad
I'm going to see what I can bypass if not I will have to find what resistance each sensor is that it's looking for and just put a resister in to trick them into thinking that the sensors are there (if that makes sense)
-
Cant u get aftermarket sensors plummed in so you have the readings there if you choose to use them
-
Not really as simple as tbh lol
-
havent seen this thread before but serious kudos to you Ian epic build and i love it!
that dash must have been a nightmare to fit, how much of the crash bar did you need to cut out?
-
The only bits left are the n/s bit the mounts the heater box and around the steering column, then I made up some reinforcing braces to go in the middle
So yeah not alot left of in :)
-
nice work :afro:
-
Love it mate great work for fitting that
-
Mostly fitted now it's 90% there
Just a few things to tidy up and it will be there
(http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm271/ianmorgan50/c6f49c3a.jpg)
-
That looks great mate.. is there much cutting about around the top of the dash to fit the contours of the car ??
-
In one word yes lol
The only problem I have to sort now is the dash is shorter around the the a pillars so I'm either going to fiber glass around it or make some alloy plates to cover the holes as the polished alloy should go with the other bits on the dash
-
i would go for polished as fibreglass you even look at it and it explodes lol
-
To be fair polished alloy will be easier and less messy :)
-
Do the heat vent work? As in demist the windscreen?
-
Yes up and down works and the temps works
But where I had to mod the air ducts on the side, they are a bit weak but I'm going to mount some tweeters in side them anyway to keep the dash looking clean
-
Looks sweet mate, what made you want to do it?
-
I just seen a dash come up for good money and thought I'll give it a go lol
It is one of thoughs never again jobs though lol
-
are you changing the seat's now! as they look :lipsrsealed: compared to the tanderd of the rest of the car :smug:
-
I'm 50/50 on getting them retrimed with black centres or some S3 seats or maybe even some recaros :)
-
I vote retrim, love the seats just need black centres or maybe like a grey Alcantara or suede. Fair play for going for it, it does look like a never again job
-
Few changes to the master plan :)
The charger is now coming off to be sold (after £2,200 pm me if intrested)
Now going down the turbo route looking to get 325 - 375bhp so the engine will be coming out for a rebuild and a few new toys added
Will add pics when work starts
