Title: Snifferdog's Mk4 GTI.......
Post by: snifferdog on 06 February 2011, 20:01
Picked this up this afternoon. What a great, well built car. The engine bay is mint and theres loads of new stuff on it - exhaust, brakes, HID's (dont know much about these?! Are they easy to take off and sell?),tyres etc so Im well happy. It is nowhere near what could be considered fast or involving but it feels good and sturdy for the mrs and the baby! Not got any of my own pics yet cos it was dark by the time I got home but will hopefully get some better ones up soon.

Plans are to lower it a very sensible amount and put some nice wheels on it. Thats as far as Ive got so far.

Yes mate, its the 1.8 20v n/a. Its in really good condition. Youve just reminded me - I need some new number plates too.  The mk3 8v was all over it on the way home, it really isnt quick.

Oh, and I need GTI badges.

Just some nicer mk4 standard alloys I think. Id like some anni's but doubt the cash flow is gonna allow that for a while.

If we can get that polo sold then mods should be forthcoming. Unless I sell the golf  :lipsrsealed:

My first mod will be to take the stupid directline accident book out that she's gone and stuck in the front window  (visible in first pic)

Painted the calipers red today. Was quite pointless though as the wheels are so big and crap that they hide them anyway.

Yeah I think that's when those types, in fact most large exhausts look pants, when they sit too low.  mines too low at the mo and i don't like it.. when its snug I do.... if it is too low you'll have to either find shorter hangers or shorten the bars that hang on the hangers.

Looking good Buddy.....only one thing for me is the rear badge. It does not look original and in my opinion would look better if this were removed. But does look nice Mate

Ay up Deano, havent seen you on here in a while!

Didnt think anyone had noticed the rear badge  (assuming you mean the GTI), its actually an original off a mk5. I keep thinking about removing it myself but then I think that a mk4 needs as much doing to make it look like a gti as possible.

Rear GTI removed  I think it would benefit from a dewipering now to tidy the back end up even more.

Thing is Mate that anyone who's opinion counts would know it's a GTI anyway. Anyway I have come back to the badge myself Mate but am waiting to get some decent pics before posting any.

Its been hammering it down all day and I wanted to do something with my car so I gave the engine bay a bit of a clean, its nothing special but it seems to spruce up okay! At least I havent got a turbo cluttering it up   Think I might like to buy some red hoses or summat, never done anything like that though, where do I get em from?

Oh, new airbox and panel filter before that though.

Just fitted a pipercross panel filter and an unbroken airbox, it seems to pick up from the low revs quicker. I've always preferred panel filters to induction kits.

Also, I wouldnt mind a cold air feed but havent done it before, where do I get the bits from??

Can you get replacement lower front bumper vents that a feed would attach to for the mk4?

Contact Bored-Welsh-Lad, he was selling mk3 & 4 lower bumper vents made by Hofele. Ive got them on my mk3 and they're very good quality and you can attach a 3'' cold air intake to them quite nicely.

Bit of good news today.

Just been round my girlfriends parents house for a BBQ and her brother who is moving house says

'Craig, do you want a set of recaro seats for your golf? £20 and you can have em'.

Sweet! It turns out that theyre in his garage not being used and that me taking them off his hands is doing him a favour cos he hasnt got to move them to his new house!

Picking them up on Wednesday, pics to follow!

Ok, they werent Recaro's and they are in Blue but they are mint condition and for £20 I cant complain.

Was gonna swap em for red ones but after trial fitting the passenger seat Ive decided I like the colour contrast.

Its only slight blue anyway, not solid like I thought they were.

Toying with the idea of some blue clocks now, where can I get them from?

They look good, nothing wrong with your old seats though, looks like there is plenty of life left in the current drivers seat.

So, blue seats in a red car, looks like some more colour coding will be on the cards soon then.

  Im still trying to work out how/if I can make it work.  :undecided:

And yeah, nothing wrong with the drivers seat, as long as you like bits of t shirt superglued over huge holes on your drivers seats

T shirt seats, it's all the rage!

Yeah of course it will work, couple more blue bits here and there and it will look like they were always there.

All done -

They actually look better in person than in the picture.

Only problem Ive had is that one of the airbag connections has been cut off one of the seats and now my airbag light is on.

Tomorrow I will wire one from one of my old seats onto it and hopefully the light will go off?!!  :undecided:

Oh, I also really like the idea of blue dials but cant find any anywhere? Anyone know?
