Title: MK2 - Abit green
Post by: leigh_harty on 17 January 2011, 18:02
Thats right, ive cracked it. Sold my vr6 at the start of december and picked up my little 1.6 'feel the power' carb'd mk2.

From this:

^^ Although thats after i picked up my new cups and 2 new front tyres, it was totally standard

Picked it up for £395 with 11month MOT and 6 month tax. Sills have been protected, underneath is rust free, solid and green? i presume its an old style underseal?

Obviously it wasnt going to stay at that height so a drop was then added, along with 15mm rear spacers and longer bolts (came with the wheels)

Looking good, what made you change from a VR to a carb?

Keeping the wheel clean through the winter, salt, and me being a tit on empty carparks....

... is very annoying and time consuming, the wheels arnt laquered so regular treatment is needed

Looking good, what made you change from a VR to a carb?

I wanted a mk2, regardless of engine size. That simple

This one came up close and cheap and very good condition.

Fair play, was a good price and looks really good.  Any plans for it?

It did have an idle problem and slight running problem.. typical pierburg! Took it off, cleaned it, re-plumbed all the vac lines and made the running slightly better but the revs would slowly increase too quite abit (no rev guage)... disconnected the pipe that controls the idle and set the idle at a constant speed

I presume theres some sort of diagphram inside the 3/4 point unit? Ah well that was only a temp fix and a nice and shiny new weber soon took its place with manual choke, runs like a dream and MPG has nearly doubled.

Next on the list is new exhaust, my current centre pipe is blowing slighly.

I remember my 1.6 carbed Mk2, was a great little engine so long it was air leak free

I had a weber 32/34 DMTL carb and it ran great once the airleak was fixed (it was the flange between the carb and the inlet manifold that was causing it, common fault).

Over the weekend Ive done some serious wiring and still not done.. and some funky covering.

I want to do the whole roof lining in such 'material'.....

Wiring.. well ive hacked up the centre console and added a double din screen... 2 amps for the 6x9's and sub ( i know the problems with running them both, ill be enclosing the 6x9's) and added small speakers from a range rover into the dash

Well if anybody has paid attention to the mk2 section recently, i asked a question on a decent cup holder (this is a must for me, long journeys etc)....

Thats how i want it to sit so time to bodge some stuff together and make it stay  :nerd:

Used some window packers i got from work ( I make windows, doors & conservatorys for a living by the way ) to fill the gap between the holder and the radio cage, the holder itself has plenty of locating holes so no problem there, fairly easy to do and its holding up quite good. 2 cans of monster and some of our glorious english roads and good so far

Nope just a universal jobbie. Sits very well and doesn't look put of place too! A mk4 would be a better choice and easy upgradable

Nice little mk2 mate I prefer mk2s with small bumpers think they look more retro. One of my favorite sets of wheels those ats cups I had a Identical set on my mk3 wagon they looked awsome when they was clean but a nightmare to clean when they have no laquer on but they really suit your car.Can you insure these on classic car insurance out of intrest?

Ta pal, yeah I prefer the smaller bumpers (less parts to fall off). And the wheels are a pain in't ass but what can you do eh?! I'm looking at camber shims for the rear at the moment and weighing them up.

As for the classic insurance I havent a clue? Maybe someone else can shed some light.

Also weighing up if i should do the whole gti head/ cam with 4 branch. My mate has gti cam lying in his shed.... Also need a new breather pipe for rocker cover as mine is seriously callapse although leak free.

Cheers  I knew the holder would I've been abit of a 'hit n miss' deal like all things universal but it's actually quite decent! So good shout.... Especially when they sent me 2! Haha lovely. If I get bored ill Probly stick something else in there, only thing it lacks is a 'push to open' function.
