Title: Mk2 16v Strutbrace fitment
Post by: Neo Badness on 13 January 2011, 12:48
Test fitted the front upper strut brace I got when I bout the car. It seems to interfere with the top of the brake fluid resevoir and aside from that it appears to sit right in the way of the bonnet reinforcement when trying to shut the bonnet. Will post pics when not at work.

1. Maybe the guy bought a 8v strut brace or something?

2. Is there a strutbrace that I can fit that will be a direct fit.

3. Have I got it on backwards?

Cheers

Sorry to clarify, I got brace with the car. Eibach ones are about a million billion pounds, so may fabricate one if all else fails.

If the strut brace doesn't fit either way round, and it catches the master cylinder reservoir, and also cant shut the bonnet, my guess would be its the wrong one....

Blah blah, DH I was looking for an actual pic of one fitted to a mk2 16v.

Looks identical the one I have but it catches the bonnet. So something isn't quite right.

This is just a guess so dont slate me but....

When i had my VTS and fitted a strutbrace i tighterned it wrong and couldnt shut the bonnet, i.e i had the tension pushing the struts as apposed to pulling them together.. i may be chatting out my arse tho

Cheers Adam, that would be most helpful. Having removed the brace for the time being the bay is looking a bit bare. :undecided:

I haven't even got as far as drilling holes as I didn't see the point if I couldn't fit the brace. Will see what Adams pic's look like. I am planning on taking this to the track so it would be a nice wee addition to the 280mm brakes I fitted.

Thanks Adam.

That is really weird. It does look identical to mine. Yet mine is out by a country mile, I fitted a replacement master cylinder but it was like for like. That and it contacts the bonnet reinforcement. Hmmmn, I'm confused. Will have another bash over the weekend. Might have to break out the tapping stick...

I have a carbon bonnet so that might be why it doesn't touch the bonnet?

If you need any more pictures just give me a shout.

Possibly, good excuse. Yes darling, my strutbrace wouldn't fit, so I bought a carbon fibre bonnet
Think even a fiberglass one would be beyond me just now.  :undecided:

Most of the 16v ones I have seen tend to be close to the brake fluid cap.

I've dribbled over the performance trim website but all well out of my price range at the mo'. Would love the roof panel in CF painted body colour along with the bonnet wings and tailgate. Then fit the decent lexan windows. Beauty of CF is it doesn't rust.

Most of the 16v ones I have seen tend to be close to the brake fluid cap.

Yeah mine is so close it's bending the wee plastic tabs on the actual resevoir. Don't think it'd be feasible to move the resevoir/ M/c, spacers would defeat the purpose and still catching bonnet. Supposed to be a toasty 7C tomorrow so will stick the shorts on and get out into the lockup to see what's what.

Cheers

It defo doesn't fit. Even if I clear the brakes it'll still foul the bonnet brace  Seems strange as it looks like the one on the website. Maybe my car is squint...

Right, been a wee while but bought another 2nd hand OMP strut brace on Sunday as I was assured it had come off a mk2 16v.

Still the same issues

Why is nothing ever straight forward on my car?

Had a thought, and looking at the pic's kindly supplied by Adam again, I'm fairly sure I have a spare reservoir from an A4 that is squatter and fatter but has same size lid. That's the theory so will see if I can trial fit it tomorrow after work.

Will put up pics if it works.
