Title: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: FOREST GREEN on 09 January 2011, 16:50
I'd like to spruce up the stereo surround, cup holder, ashtray etc on the centre console of my mk4. I was thinking of getting some of this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3m-Carbon-Fibre-Wrap-vinyl-200mm-x-300mm-/180590506242?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a0c087102#ht_500wt_715

Do you think it will work? Has anyone used it before?

Thanks

Toby

Worked for me on my grill:cool:

Just remember to heat it up first,it is easier to work with when heated, becomes more flexi.
A hairdryer should do the job :nerd:

Found it - here you go - no moaning about my sandals lol

Tool around 3 hours - removing the center console was the worst part!

Film looks BLACK and feels like real CF - it comes across as blue in some photos but is BLACK.

Looks great and gives tha car an unexpected "lift" - I'm impressed.

i did the radio surround on my mk4, got some a4 pieces of 3m dynoc off ebay for a few quid.
really easy to apply, with bit of heat to stretch round the corners.

would it look ok to wrap the mirror caps? my new golf has very shiny mirror caps that are a tad to bling and i was thinking of carbon wrapping them
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: mikemk4gti on 04 February 2011, 21:19
Yes, but buy extra incase you muck it up. I don't think an A4 sheet is enough for one mirror, maybe an A5 for each one?

i wasn't planning on doing it, just buying the vinyl and handing it over to my wifes brother who works for a vinyl sign place in dundee,i'll check ebay see what sizes i can get it in.

cheers andy

wouldnt the vinyl wrap start peeling after time?
or the weather ruin it?

APA ftw, cheaper and better than 3M :)

The BMW looks sweet mate! Nice work.

I'm debating a full vinyl wrap at some point, be interesting. Even at trade price, it won't be cheap :D

So, has anyone done the centre console trim from a mk4? Is there a guide anywhere?

ive done it mate
first time messing with vinyl and its realy easy and simple
theres guides all over youtube for working with the stuff
i used a hairdryer and worked fine
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: jockgti on 12 February 2011, 19:55
they sell kits on Ebay with the vinyl pre-cut to fit all the bits, but from what i can see it would still leave the crappy wood stuff on the passenger side interior door handle, can get it in carbon fibre, brushed aluminium look
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: ashie_b1986 on 12 February 2011, 20:47
i would check the sizes on ebay first to make sure its big enough
you need to make sure theres enough vinyl that you can pull and stretch it around the edges

plus i think its cheaper to buy it in sheets and then do it yourself
i paid 10 quid for 3 sheets on ebay and i have some left over
i did my ashtray and centre pieces

APA ftw, cheaper and better than 3M :)

The thing I dont like about the APA stuff, is the weave isn't straight. Over a roof it looks toss as its wavey, fine for little interior pieces though. I used it on my passat.

Very nice, I've done the same, had to buy extra to get the weave the same way on the cup holder.
Only thing I ain't done is the ashtray, does the catch when you open and close it? And how do you remove it?
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: ashie_b1986 on 15 February 2011, 16:39
no mate doesn't catch at all
first pull the inside of your ashtray out so you can get to the screw underneath
then pull it towards you and remove the cable from the back of the fag lighter then it will all come out,
then i just stripped the ashtray. easy enough just needs unclipping
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: FOREST GREEN on 15 February 2011, 20:27
wow, that looks better than I expected, well done mate!!

So............is this the stuff you used?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3m-Carbon-Fibre-Wrap-vinyl-200mm-x-300mm-/180590506242?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a0c087102#ht_500wt_715

If so, how many sheets of say A4 did you use? I only want to do the cup holder, ashtray, stereo surround & front/rear badges

Thanks for your help mate

Ashtray done!
I had 2 A4 sheets and I've done all the interior wood including door handles and still got a bit left so 2 should be plenty for you

i ordered 3 sheets and i done the central surround and the front badge and still had some left over,
i will do the back badge too but have to look into it,
i think the only way to get it off is to remove it completely and stick it back on with something
not too sure , its really easy to do and well worth it

any ideas how to get the grab bits off frominside the car?

Done my door handles earlier and it's real nice stuff to work with, bit of heat from hairdryer and it forms round curves nicely.
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: mowlamb on 19 February 2011, 20:07
The passenger and rear one's just need a flat head screwdriver and some gentle persuasion. Put the screw driver in the gap and prize the handle of and work your way along it once it's loose use your hands and pull it off. For the drivers door handle you need to remove the lack plastic bit on the inside. again a flat head screwdriver will help. It will just pop off. Then the whole handle just need pulling in all corners at that will pop off too.

Im gonna ask this question here rather than start a new thread so i hope this is the right place!

I wish to wrap my wood effect in my MK4 1.8 GTI in the 3M carbon fibre effectbut my grab handle on the drivers side has some very fine cracks through the wood effect. I am wondering if i need to replace that section before wrapping it incase the fine cracjs show or does anyone have any experience of wrapping such cracks and it looking fine in the end?

Many thanks

SG!
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: FOREST GREEN on 27 February 2011, 13:22
I reckon as long as they are fine cracks, you should be ok mate. You could always remove the handles and apply a little filler then sand them down 1st before applying the wrap

Just a thought.

Shep seems to know what he's talking about, I'm sure if you wait a little while, he will reply!!
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: mowlamb on 27 February 2011, 14:23
If they are just fine cracks then try some 800 grade sandpaper. That should smooth them out. Then go over it again with some 1200 grade then clean the handle and then start wrapping. That should give a good finish.
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: shepgti on 01 March 2011, 00:40
as said it depends on what the cracks are like. my door handles had a few little dents/scratches from keys and stuff and the dont show through the vinyl at all
Title: Re: carbon fibre wrap
Post by: ashie_b1986 on 01 March 2011, 09:04
same with mine too
thats the main reason i covered some parts in the car because of the scraches and scuffs
didnt show through at all
