i know yo lot will be biased but need a hand picking my next car
1996 N 518 ISE 101000 FBMWSH MOT OCT NO TAX
1997 P PASSAT 1.8 T FVWSH MOT APRIL NO TAX
Both roughly same price same to insure same to tax. Both have under 3 owners. Which is better bang for buck? Fuel consumption etc!

I know ive got a vw  but the passat for me is a far better more modern looking car that you can improve looks and performce wise. The 5 series BMW is a good old car but just that a good old looking car,not sure fuel wise I would say the passat better mpg.
-
not sure on performance wise but the passat wins on looks anyday
-
Passat, much better bet.
BMW 518I is very flat to drive and has to work really hard.
-
what is the differenct between the 1.8 T 20v passat engine and the golf 1.8 T 20v engine? My dad said the bimmer was heavy and very sluggish, would have porr around town MPG due to the weight etc. The only thing swaying me to the bimmer is the extra months MOT. But to be fair the passat has 13 stamps in the book. MOstly VW dealer but a few car care stamps too.
-
And is there anything i should look out for when viewing the passat???

Both the same I believe.
Passat is the better choice.

i own a passat 1.8t and its a good car and i used to work at a bmw garage and a 520 wasnt great so a 518 is going to be even worse. and in the 4 1/2 years ive owned the passat it has only ever failed the first test i put it through and that was a pair of flexi brake hoses and a cv boot
-
passat mate, BMWs are comon as fook!!
-
the old bmw engine is a bit crap and in a 5 sieries its just going to be lame, go with the turbo torques in the passat
-
Passat as it's a better car and then bollocks of an engine. Same as golf engine and tuning potential is great.
-
Passat all the way, the bmw with that engine will drink fuel, think the 518 is 127bhp which is crap. They are nice cars though and well built but if i was looking a 5 series bmw i would look for a td modle or anything 2lt or above. Also the head gaskets are a known fault with that engine, go for the passat you know it makes sence
-
Ooooooooooooooooooooo passat fromme but i might be biased
i got told mine would be thirsty, but to be fair i can easily pull 35+ mpg on runs including town work, but that said i can just as easily hit 20s whenon the autobahn
mines currently on 173k on a T plate  but had done 146 in its first 6 years
get yasen over onto Uk Passats - b5 & b5.5 section - LOADS of info on the ssat

I have never driven a BMW, and never will, (I know there are exceptions but I find BMW drivers arrogant on the whole and I prefer to drive a car that comes with indicators fitted as most BMWs don't seem to ), but I used to own a 98 1.8T Passat. It was a fabulous car to drive, very responsive, reliable, fun but also roomy enough for a family of five. I only sold it as the missus wanted a 4x4.

Worse than that they are 115bhp with a 0-60 of 12.8secs
-
115 bhp in a 5  thats a waste of a rwd chassi
-
518 has gone so passat it is

Yep 520I was only 129bhp, 525I was the best choice 192bhp.

If you look you will find the BMW has better paintwork and corroson resistance than the VW.
If I was buying an old car it would be the BMW every time.
-
Passat is the choice. The 518 is way underpowered. If it were a 530 then that would win for me.
-
You bought that Beemer yet?

obviously putting aside the expense of worn parts and fooked electrics.

BMW secondhand bits are prized and easy to get hold of. Passats are seen as knackered after 10 years, and not worth bothering about.

Not by me they're not... both cars can be fine if cared for, also both can be sh*t if not...... In my experience I have seen more wrong with an old, underpowered BMW than I have an old VW... and if either were to fail, the BMW becomes expensive to fix.
-
You missed my point.
BMW's are seen as special, so people keep them serviced and often for a long time. Passats are just a reps car, not loved, and keen to be rid of. So s/h spares are not as easy to get.
-
the passat 1.8t is soo slow compared to the golf 1.8t, the engines are mounted differently,
bmw would be slower, round town, the passat is getting under 23mpg on short runs, and a full tank shows about 300 miles roughly on the mte
@ r32 its not the car thats special its the owner

I can see your point but then again if he was looking at a 525td or 530 or above then it would be a hole different story. He is looking at a farely old 518 which you can get cheap parts but then again what i have found out is that the bmw wears considerbly more then the passat. I also find that the passat is better built against the 518. The problem i see is that we are talking about a low spec not very popular 518 BMW. Not many of these are driving around and there is a reason for this, they are always low spec, small engine, heavy car, common for headgasket failure, using a lot of oil and gearbox problems.
You have stated that you can parts for bmw really easy and cheap compared to the passat, i disagree with this, you can get hold of parts for bmw ok but they are not as cheap as the passat. For example a heater motor for the bmw is £202 and the passat £132, radiator fan bmw £55 passat £35, cambelt service bmw £600 passat £400. These are just a few things and there might be certain parts that are cheaper for the bmw but not too much cheaper. BMW did also see that the only people who are going to drive there cars are exceutives and people with a bit of money who want to make a statment, as a result they also said that if these people buy this car then they must have money to maintain it, this is why parts are more expensive then passat.
Can i also make a point here that in modern days people driving BMW's are not now seen as special but as tossers, as so many BMW's are now driven by business reps who think they are faster then anyone else and own the road. I use to part own a car sales business and the BMW's where never as good to drive as the VW's or Audi's, unless you start going up into the big engines fr the BMW like M3 and 330 etc where it became seen that BMW actually gave a sh*t about building the car.
Thats just my point of view.

I ran a 1999 318i for a few months and even in that the engine was awfully slow. I swapped the week after I got overtaken by 1.4 diesel Nissan up a slip road. It was truly awful and didn't handle that well either, rear passenger leg room was poor and the boot space more so.
