Passat as it's a better car and then bollocks of an engine. Same as golf engine and tuning potential is great.

Passat all the way, the bmw with that engine will drink fuel, think the 518 is 127bhp which is crap. They are nice cars though and well built but if i was looking a 5 series bmw i would look for a td modle or anything 2lt or above. Also the head gaskets are a known fault with that engine, go for the passat you know it makes sence  :grin: :grin:

Ooooooooooooooooooooo passat fromme but i might be biased  :laugh: :tongue:

i got told mine would be thirsty, but to be fair i can easily pull 35+ mpg on runs including town work, but that said i can just as easily hit 20s whenon the autobahn  :evil:

mines currently on 173k on a T plate  :shocked: but had done 146 in  its first 6 years

get yasen over onto Uk Passats - b5 & b5.5 section - LOADS of info on the ssat  :wink:

I have never driven a BMW, and never will, (I know there are exceptions but I find BMW drivers arrogant on the whole and I prefer to drive a car that comes with indicators fitted as most BMWs don't seem to :angry:), but I used to own a 98 1.8T Passat. It was a fabulous car to drive, very responsive, reliable, fun but also roomy enough for a family of five. I only sold it as the missus wanted a 4x4. :rolleyes:

Worse than that they are 115bhp with a 0-60 of 12.8secs

Yep 520I was only 129bhp, 525I was the best choice 192bhp.

If you look you will find the BMW has better paintwork and corroson resistance than the VW.
If I was buying an old car it would be the BMW every time.

Passat is the choice. The 518 is way underpowered. If it were a 530 then that would win for me.
