Title: How long are you planning on keeping your Mk6?
Post by: GolfTi on 08 January 2011, 20:58
I'm planning/hoping to keep mine for at least 5-7 years.

Just hope I don't get tempted by the Mk7 in 2013/14 or whenever.
I really can't imagine changing it at the moment.

I had a Mk5 and changed after a year or so mainly due to the leather.
This time though I've made all of the right choices (for me) and don't look forward to the day I have to trade him in.

16 months of car love.

Will keep the GTI and the Mercedes until approx March 2013 that is 3 years. Then we might just get a couple of Kias as we would be really old and decrepid.

Will you join a Kia forum?

I'll be 63 on Monday. In 2013 I'll be 65. I'll be too fcuked to care. But then again, I might get a second life and become a really dirty old man!
I might even keep the GTI a bit longer, but the Merc will have to go.

OMG! no wonder you were being a bit cagey on the age thread! You might be the elder statesman of the forum! If i forget, many happy returns (to the forum) for monday.

I normally keep my cars for 3 years mainly due to finance cos i should've paid more attention at school, but this is the first car i've had that i may consider keeping for a while longer and saving a few pennies.

To be perfectly serious. I will have to work until I drop and if my grand kids are still here, I will need a small family car, Golf size. I don't think I will at that time in my life go for a performance hatch, but I will want something with a bit of class. By 2013 Kias will probably have this but I'll stick with the Germans probably. I won't be retiring until I am 70.
It is a dilemma as to how long I should keep this GTI. I love it so much.

You really are a fickle individual.
I'm glad the VankWagon days are behind you though as that appeared to be a depressing time.
All the best for Monday in case I forget although I doubt you will let us

Back on subject, I'll probably just keep mine until the PCP is up in 18 months and then hand it back and start again.
Although I've been looking at various 2 years leasing deals and might go with one of them. Slightly more money but I get fed up with my cars after a short spell.  You can't beat that new car smell / feeling

I'm planning/hoping to keep mine for at least 5-7 years.

When I bought mine, I told myself that I'd keep it for 5-7 years, that's why I bought it new and to my spec.

However, I would say that in the next 3-5 I'll do one of the following:

a. Modify the GTI to Revo Stage 2, Militek, Carbonio + my pending Bi-xenon upgrade which I rue not sorting out at factory order.
b. Buy a Golf R Mk2 or 3 potentially if I can tolerate the seats (not a leather fan) and they get rid of that horrid plastic backing that looks ex Focus ST parts bin.
c. New shape Audi A3 (S3 or RS3 variant, probably the latter) but it would depend on how well it stacked up to the Golf R.

I kept the Peugeot 306 GTi-6 until it was almost 12 years old.  I'd hope to keep the Mk6 just as long, so long as nothing disastrous happens to it.  The Pug had a few issues latterly, mainly the aircon was buggered and would have cost more to fix than the car was worth by then.

If they have another nice scrappage scheme in the early to mid 2020s, that would be good....

Rolfe.

I was just teasing. I had seriously considered the GTD but I do about 5-7k a year, the economy argument doesn't win out on that basis.

p3asa: You cannot be serious and accuse Skoda of making 'tasty' cars. They might be reliable and well made but they look like toads. It certainly takes a leap of faith to hanker for one of them.

Post by: Exonian on 09 January 2011, 07:06
Lord knows how long I'll keep mine. I normally have a habit of getting shot of my newer cars after a year or so when something else is released that takes my fancy, but I keep my older cars for much longer as they feel more like a family member.
Then again, I don't use my newer cars much as I just jump in my runabout most days knowing full well I don't care if it gets bumped or scraped. I tend to have a bit of OCD with my newer 'pride and joy' car so tend to leave it wrapped up in the garage. Silly really.

I have never bought a brand new car, I tend to spend quite a while sourcing a car that I want as I change cars quite often so have to make sure I really have the very best deal I can possibly get to minimise depreciation. Its a bit of a 'thrill of the chace' kind of thing which I find far more intoxicating than actually owning and driving the car! My wife often says she's glad I'm like that with cars and not women (however I'm always open to offers!!!  )

And as this thread is three pages long now it's been on topic far too long and the moderators will just get lazy  So, Snoops, is that an Exeo I see in your sig?  :smug: Care to provide us with more info?

So my answer to the original question is ''f**k knows''  I kind of like the thought of keeping it a long time though, as new cars get more and more expensive and more and more like white goods (no offence meant to owners of white cars there, as I love white GTIs).

Which ones were you thinking of? I had been looking at getting a car for my wife and went and checked out the Skodas, the top of the line Fabia (not the VRS) did not feel good to be in. Fit and finish in the cabin felt distinctly budget and I swore I was going to break the indicator stalk off at every turn. I've no doubt about their mechanical integrity but I could never see myself in one.

I shall be keeping my car for another 3 years so its completly paid off. Then I shall be starting the whole mad process of bying another one. I've done this more or less since I was 20 years old (37 now) so I dread to think how much finance I've paid on cars over the years. However I work hard, have a fairly stressful job and a 30 mile commute in to london everyday and so the GTi proivdes me with lots of thrills and that bit of luxury I need. This has certainly been the best car I've ever been lucky enough to own.

I had a drive of my sisters brand new fully loaded mazda mps yesterday. Now there's a story which I'll post on another thread.

Ps typing this on my blackberry so sorry for the spelling mistakes.

Mainly the Octavia VRs and the Superb, i know the latter is bit of a stupid name but when i see one i can't help thinking it's a nice car, i think i'd consider the Octavia if i couldn't afford a GTI mainly because the current leon is bit crap inside imo. However having said all that i love my GTI and like Golfti i don't like the thought of changing atm.

I'll keep mine for 3-4 years i think.

Depending on what position im in financially i'll either pickup a MK6 R or maybe hold out for the MK7 R.

After having the MK4 R32 for 6 years, i want to go back to 4 motion next time.

 I think you want to re read the thread as I said no such thing!!

However I'm not a badge snob and currently have a beat up S reg Skoda estate on my drive that I regularly have to jump start which I use on dodgy trips. Going to shopping car parks, the dump, and going to the football. Its a great feeling to know you can park it or drive it anywhere and not constantly be paranoid about it.  Plus, the car and insurance cost less than 4 winter wheels and tyres and drives like a dream in the snow

I normally keep my cars for between 2 and 3 years, but the idea at the moment is to try and keep this one for longer as I'm now only doing around 5k miles per year. Saying that though I'm a bit impulsive at times so who knows!

Mmmm a free R  even a 100,000 miler. Do you by any chance have a sister I could marry? Or maybe even your brother if he's pretty like Fernando Torres ('cos nobody would notice the difference if that's the case), then I'd be family too...... :smug:

You'd do for him then. I'm employing him and his wife next year. I am giving him my sister and Agreeable Slick is also probably going to comply with his, though he is being a bit coy at the present. I do approximately 4500 miles per year. So my car will be quite a nice dowry to help Exonian on his way. As I have a Freedom Pass, I think I can forfeit my car for the sake of this wonderful man's happiness.

This is most exciting.

Woops, got carried away and should have attached this to the previous post. Slappy botty.

Gilly, get a tank or a truck. You are no good with delicate objects. How many prangs with this one? Obviously, none of them were your fault.

I suppose with 400+bhp RWD, you'll have more dramatic prangs. Go on, I'll live vicariously through you.

I Will keep it at least 5 years. It's very expensive to change and I am now retired and I only do 8000 miles a year. I kept a peugeot 106 xsi for 9 years and a ford puma 1.7 for 7 years so I do tend to keep my cars for some time.

At least the four years of finance (so that's another 29 months). Will probably then save for another year the amount I pay for the GTi to give me a deposit on top of the value of the car - so at least 5 years.
At that point, I have to decide to buy something else (and at probably nearly £30k by then) that'll most likely be a fast BMW. Much as I love this car it's just a VW and the one I have is just about the limit for me in terms of price.
I could get a used M3 for £30k as an example.

Nice car a mate had one (just sold it and ordered an RS3) but the image of a TT owner is what puts me off.

So Snoops you just orderd an RS3?  :undecided:
No, A mate of mine has. He owned a TTRS and has just sold it. He has just ordered a RS3 with a 6% Discount
