Title: Project colour code is COMPLETE!!
Post by: mowlamb on 04 January 2011, 12:27
So, whilst bored last night I was looking around ukmkiv's and found a few threads on people that have colour coded their standard valances. I have a votex front valance on the way which I'm also going to spray myself but as money is tight I'm going to have a go at doing my rear valance. It's only a short term mod as once I have some money I will be getting an anni one but hopefully it will look good until I can get one.

I'm hopefully going to do a little DIY guide with pics to help others with no money but who are also fed up of the rubbish black valances.

The first stage which I started today is just sanding it down to smooth out any scuffs/scratches. As you can see in the first picture I also have the towing hook cover off. I'm going to colour code this too as it will stick out like a sore thumb once the valance is done.

I used some 80 grade sandpaper to get the scuffs/scratches out. I'm going to get some filler primer later on today to hopefully fill any little bits that I've missed. Then I can begin smoothing it even more with 600, 800 and 1200 wet and dry.

I have also decided to colour code the chrome part of the VW sharan badge Reflex Silver. That is in primer and should be finished in a day or so.

More to come soon......

Right after sanding the rear valance with some 80 grade sandpaper I have now sprayed it with some filler primer. As far as I'm aware this stuff fills scuffs and scratches better than normal primer. I've done three coats of filler primer and now have to wait for it to harden, so I'm going to leave it overnight, before using 600, 800 and 1200 grade wet and dry to get the smooth finish I need before primer and then paint.

Thats basically how I did my front valance, the only difference is I used a plastic primer before the 2K high build but I'm not sure if it is needed as the sanding should key the surface enough for the primer to adhere
Title: Re: Project colour code has begun.....
Post by: Wazzzer on 04 January 2011, 20:51
yeah I think the plastic primer just allows you to skip the keying process

good work so far mate, just don't expect all those deep scratches to go away with just the filler primer, it doesn't build up that much
Title: Re: Project colour code has begun.....
Post by: mowlamb on 04 January 2011, 20:55
Don't worry Wazzer I wasn't expecting it to work miracles lol. Plan of attack 2moro is to sand the living daylights out of it to get it nice and smooth. Then once I return the grey primer to Halfords and get the one I actually need, grey plastic primer (I picked the wrong one up :embarassed:) I will maybe get some coats of primer on before 2moro night.

I got 600, 800 and 1200 grade paper that should be ok shouldn't it? To use the sandpaper wet do I use warm soapy water?
Title: Re: Project colour code has begun.....
Post by: Wazzzer on 04 January 2011, 21:18
any water will do mate, it's just to keep the dust down as it's very fine and doesn't do you any favours when it gets airborne :undecided:
Title: Re: Project colour code has begun.....
Post by: mowlamb on 04 January 2011, 21:19
That's ok then, will hopefully get a chance to attack it after work 2moro.
Title: Re: Project colour code has begun.....
Post by: tech1889 on 04 January 2011, 21:44
looks good mate.. theres a lot of wet sanding there to get rid of them deep scratches.. outcome should look nice tho..

Todays update.....

Well today I decided to start sanding it all again to get it much smoother. I started with some 600 grade wet and dry which seemed to be smoothing it ok. I cleaned it with a cloth and dried it and run my hands along it to see how smooth I had got it. It was ok but not smooth enough so I dug out my various sheets of sandpaper and found some 240 grade and set about the smoothing process once more.

The 240 grade seemed to be doing a much better job so I took my time and worked every inch with it. I never went all the way back to the plastic all over the valance but it now feels quite smooth. I think I might be ready for the plastic primer now. The only problem is my local halfords have run out so I will have to go to another one 2moro after work.

Here are a couple of pics of how it is:

Any comments or advice welcome

Post by: hainesz on 05 January 2011, 16:56
you shouldnt have used the 80 grit paper to start, its a bit too course i would only use that if it had sh!t loads of layers of paint, you will need to get rid of all those scores in the plastic or they will show through the paint and look dreadfull...

just take your time, remember its not just how good you paint it, its all about the preparation
Title: Re: Project colour code has begun.....
Post by: mowlamb on 05 January 2011, 17:09
I used the course paper to start with to try and help remove some of the deeper scuffs and scratches that was on the valance as it was on a bumper I got from the scrappy. Now I have gone back over it today with some 240 it seems to have came up ok. I know there is still plenty of sanding to do tho. Once I get home from work 2moro I'm going to have another session with some 240 to try and smooth it even more.

I'm in no rush to get this done so will take my time to get it as smooth as I can before I prime and paint.

I've been busy removing the filler primer and sanding the valance to get it smooth. It is currently on it's 3rd coat of primer so once that is all dry I'll get a few pics. My question is this: There are a few scratches that were quite deep and I couldn't sand out. Can I now add a couple of coats of filler primer to help with these scratches?

Also I fitted the sharan badge that I Fully colour coded yesterday. Here are a few pics. Let me know if you think it is better than the normal chrome look as I'm a little unsure on it.

Too much silver?
Title: Re: Project colour code continues.....
Post by: mowlamb on 09 January 2011, 16:16
I think it looks better in the flesh and once I've finished the rear valance I'll get some pics of the whole car which might help. I was originally going to go for the silver and black theme with the car. Even got the gloss black vinyl and everything but now I'm thinking of sticking with all silver. I'm hoping to attempt to smooth my rear bumper soon and eventually want do the front as well. I think if I'm going down the smooth route then all silver should look quite good.

i would use proper filler for bumpers rather than filler primer...

Here's the pics of the valance so far:

The camera wouldn't pic the scratches up but they are just small ones on the right hand side of the valance. That filler looks pretty good tho.

I was going to do a few more coats this evening but it's raining outside and I don't want to ruin anything so close to the end. I'm leave it overnight and will hopefully be able to get 2-3 more coats of lacquer on 2moro. Plan then is to leave that overnight and then saturday I will polish and wax it before fitting it. Weather permitting again!

The finish ain't perfect but as I'm still new to the spray can so I wasn't expecting it to be. I'm not too sure how close to perfect you could get it with a spray can but I'm happy with how it has come out. I have learnt a lot from doing this tho which I can use when doing my votex valance if/when it arrives. All in all a worth while project

What you spray with makes little difference to the outcome, with a can you preferably want the fan spray nozzle, but it is seriously ALL in the prep work, thin coat, rub down, thin coat rub down; so on and so on, the thinner the paint job the better, thick paint chips a lot more easily, and takes far longer to properly set off! All in the prep :)

Following the success of the rear valance, yesterday I decided to do my front valance as well. Also that fact it doesn't look like I'm getting my votex anymore but that's a different story.

I used what I learnt from doing the rear valance to make the front valance an even better finish. This time round I used my dad's bosch sander to start with. This with some 120 grade paper help me get it much smoother than I did with the rear. I managed to get rid of all the textured pattern from the original finish by using the sander then varying grades of paper from 240 up to 1200. Once I had done this I realised the scuffs and scratches were going to need more attention. So I popped to halfords and got some bumper filler. Never used the stuff before so this was new territory. I've filled hole in walls when decorating so didn't think it could be much different.

it was pretty easy stuff to work with and I managed to get rid of 90% of the scuffs and scratches. I then used a few coats of primer then a couple of coats of filler primer. The filler primer seems to have covered the lighter scuffs and scratches quite well and I managed to get a really smooth finish.

As it stands the valance has 2 coats of paint on and should hopefully be ready to put back on 2moro once I've left the lacquer overight to dry/harden.

I wish I had taken some pics of the process now because how it was when I took it off to how it is now is pretty good. I think with a bit more practice with the filler I could have got it almost perfect. :smug:

It's called IPSON or something similar I think. Was easy to use and seems to have given a nice finish. First coat of lacquer is on so a few more of them then it's in the airing cupboard for the night. Once the lacquer is finished I'll take a few pics to try and show the finish. I need to imagine an 11 year old front valance and the scuffs and scratches that would be on it to appreciate it tho.

It's no anni or votex front valance but looks better than the nasty standard black finish!

Needs some wheels and to be lowered now tho. Also I've got some gloss black vinyl I was going to do my roof with but I've kinda gone off that idea now but I am thinking of doing the b pillar between the doors in it. What do you guys think to that as I'm unsure. Anyone here done it and has some pics?

I will eventually get anni valances but was fed up of the look of mine so thought I'd have a go myself. Came out really well too.
