Title: (((((VR6 STANDARD - TO - VR6 TRACK ))))))
Post by: mmaattyyg on 01 January 2011, 21:42
AS SOME OF YOU GUYS ALREADY KNOW I AM PREPARING MY GOLF VR6 MK3 FOR TRACK USE !

TO DATE I HAVE STRIPPED OUT THE WHOLE INTERIOR BACK TO THE METAL (SURPRISING HOW MUCH THE CARPET AND UNDERLAY WEIGHS)

IVE ALSO COMPLETELY TAKEN OUT THE DASH, JUST NEED TO CUT OUT ANY WIRES THEY ARE NOT NEEDED.

TODAY I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A FULL SET OF POLYCARBONATE WINDOWS, SHOULD BE WITH ME BY THE 6TH OR 7TH  SO LOOKING FORWARD TO STRIPING OUT MORE WEIGHT FROM ALL THE DOORS IE WINDOW MECHS AND MOTORS (THEY WILL BE FOR SALE IN THE CLASSIFIED SECTION AS SOON AS.

DOES A MK2 ROLL CAGE FIT A MK3 ?

ANY INFO OR ADVISE TO SET UP MY VR6 FOR THE TRACK WOULD BE GREAT !

IVE ADDED A FEW PICS AND WILL TRY AND DOCUMENT AND KEEP PICS OF THE PROJECT(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l639/mmaattyyg/golf5.jpg)(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l639/mmaattyyg/golf1-1.jpg)

Good point as I'm not sure where to read or post, certainly not going too try and keep up with all of them... I struggle as it with the main cars in dub rides at times....  Can I suggest you start a dub rides thread as you will be certain to get an audience there and lots of positive feedback.

I can't help much on a track car setup but am curious what your plans are for the front seats, what are you thinking of putting in there?

if you have two mk3 vr6 golfs both standard but one of them has had weight taken out of it and now weighs exactly half of what the other does, how is the bhp then worked out ? does it then mean in reality the lightened car is now double the bhp of the completly standard vr6 when its driving on the road/track ? and not on the rollers ! if they were both put on the rollers they would both be approx 175bhp  if they were put on the road what and how do you work out the bhp ?
Title: Re: (((((VR6 STANDARD - TO - VR6 TRACK ))))))
Post by: Bellend on 01 January 2011, 23:18
They both have exactly the same BHP.

The white wheels add 30BHP as the other guy with white wheels proved though.

The stripped out VR would have a better BHP per tonne, so would be quicker but I'm sure it would be far more nose heavy now.

Power would be exactly the same regardless of weight.

However the power to weight ratio of the stipped out car would be better, meaning it would be slightly faster, but definately not more powerful  :lipsrsealed:

Horse power of an engine never changes.... Doesn't matter what you do to the body, engine power is engine power and that's it... There are two main ways of measuring it, at the wheels and at the engines flywheel, reason for this is that the power at the flywheel is the motors true power, at the wheels is what you put on the road due to power that is lost through the transmission. this is why most people get their power measured at the wheels as this reflects what you truly have at your disposal.

weight does play a major role though, what you are doing is upping your power to weight ratio.  You may have heard this before.... Power to weight is very important.  Having 175bhp sounds great but in a car that weighs well over a tonne, it's not so good.  My car should have around 135bhp which doesn't sound as good as yours, however with my car being so much lighter it will have a far better power to weight ratio over a standard mk3 vr6.  Power to weight is usually quoted per tonne.  For example.  If your car weighed a tonne and had 200bhp, your car has 100 bhp per tonne and that's what's important.

Hope that helps

ok so in reality the bhp of a car is not the most important thing to be worrying about !
and as bellend stated the stripped out car would be more nose heavy for obvious reasons, that being said what can be stripped/cut away to lighten the front end ?

Not a lot, biggest / heavest part is the engine, VR's are nose heavy.

you said

(For example.  If your car weighed a tonne and had 200bhp, your car has 100 bhp per tonne and that's what's important)

would it not be = if my car weighed TWO tonne and had 200bhp, my car has 100bhp per tonne ?

It is important but what counts is how much you have per tonne which is why the yanks always get it wrong.   You're doing the right thing in making your car faster by stripping its unnecessary weight.

I get the impression that you have a few quid to chuck at this car after the talk of supercharging.  Money could be better spend in trying to lower the front end weight.  As said there isn't a great deal you can do but you could ditch the bonnet for carbon or fibreglass to lose some front lard, relocate the battery to the boot to shift some?  Do you intend to keep the car road legal so that you can drive it to the track?

i do have a few quid to throw at it but at the same time i dont want to throw to much at it if i dont have to as it is just a hobby for me ! and after my last thread that i started and got abused i kinda learnt from you guys that there is more to a track car than grunt power or bhp so i think im going to focus on weight brakes and susspension set up and try and get the car ballenced right on the track, and then maybe look at a turbo or super charger at a later date or when the engine snaps !

i would like to keep the car just about road legal as its always easyer to drive it to the track ! but if it makes a major difference then f@CK IT ILL COMPLETLY TRACK  IT AS IM NOT TO FAR FROM THE TRACK ANYWAY.

ps im happy i could help you understand the bhp per tonne lol

Hey mate this is what I said to you about concentrating on the set up of the car before you look at big bhp. The cars that have good set UPS set fast time, yes it does help having big bhp but you are not always going to have a long enough straight to use it, glad to see you are now thinking about the actual set up of your car.

Also glad to see some advice now coming in for you mate

stupid question for ya = do you need to have a bonnet on the car for the track ? would they still let you go on ?

yep.  gotta be said, your stop on there.

have a read of

https://tickets.motorsportvision.co.uk/MSV-info/trackday_terms/Brands%20Hatch%20Trackdays%20Terms.pdf

as sated on your other thread , by DH, dash board back in would be a good place to start

well for one we live in britain, it rains, or is cold - a LOT

you have ripped the dash, and all assocaited pipework for your DE-MISTERS and blowers out.

weight saving is one thing, practicality, especially as you have stated you might want to drive it to and from the track come first however.

furthermore, dont forget to inform your insurance company of your " deviation " from standard car

Depending on how serious you are, perhaps it's a good idea to start a thread in the track section.

Those boys will sort out your brakes, suspension & cage for how serious you are then start one in the MK3 board for supercharging.

But I feel your budget will take a BIG hit after the suspension, a PROPERLY installed cage and brakes.

But IMO they are far more important then engine BHP and thats purely the reason, IMO that the 16V is a far better choice for track as it's lighter already.

& as Chuff said, how are you going to see when it mists up?

I'm sure DH will offer some very to the point & sarcastic advice but I would actually listen.

to let some hot air out when on track as to lower the temparature or the engine

it is fact that bellend that if you turn your hot air blowers on it does reduce the temeprature of the engine, radiator or no radiator

If you've got an issue with the heating system yes.

Otherwise, no. The thermostat should make sure of that.

It should sit at 90, heaters on or not. If you have to or it makes a difference, I wouldn't be thrashing it around a track.

If I was you GTFO off this forum before they slay you like george did to the dragon...

If I was you I would look at examples of track cars, a lot of people mod differently as well, there is no wrong or right way but some common sense should still be applied. All depends on what your after as well and what tools you got to your disposal, also telling people of your budget as well as what tools you have can help with the forum helping you.

I think stripping is definitely the first and right step to a track car as it will see the biggest and quickest gains in terms of "BHP/tonne" as a unit, plus selling some parts to get money back is a good way to get some cash, the VR6 engines IMO are overrated, but each to their own. But it doesn't mean it will ruin your chances of having a car fit for a track, as long as it makes you smile thats all that matters.

Vents and heat issues are not a huge issue on your car being NA (naturally aspirated), so don't waste and worry about heat issues just yet, try and stiffen the body up, from bushes etc, tires will also play a huge roll, as your brakes are only as good as your tires. Then take your brakes into consideration, on smaller circuits you will be picking and braking frequently, so consider using slightly uprated brake fluid to cope with the temps (a possible product like "Castrol Super dot4" would be good as it would not be to expensive per litre compared to "castrol SRF"), uprating to steel braided hoses is another step forward, then taking into consideration which pads and discs you will use. I uprated my brake hoses and fluid, which stopped the spongy feel when the braking temperatures kick in, but then the pads started to bake and smoke (modding is a never ending game, you improve one thing to find you need to improve another), then funneling a cold intake to the filter is another mod that can be done, won't benefit much but still a benefit... Thats a staring point in advise, just take things step by step and read up on things as well as look at other projects out there, this will inspire you on what to do, as two track cars are never the same.

Plus it looks like your not to far from me   quite a few lads on this forum not to far from us

Bosses + me are on trade.

They can drive whatever they like when they like but they have to have their own cars on the policy. I can drive anything as long as it's linked to business and can be proven in case of an accident.

I'm still sure the car would have to be put on the policy and many do not cover modified vehicles as personal. I'm POSITIVE it won't cover track either.

im with tadex and the small print basically says that I AM  insured, as appossed to the car being insured ! my cover is upto £20,000 ! meaning they will only pay me out upto 20grand if i have a crash or car gets stolen ect , its quite a good policy as any car i own or i am in perssetion of is covered, be it a £50 metro or a £100grand  bently.

obviously no insurance will cover any car on the track unless you have speccifally arranged track insurance.

my insurance is different from yours soundillussion as any car i have or drive does not have to be linked to my trade....

i pay approx £1600 a year and that covers me my wife and the wifes mums fella ! so its appox £500 each a year ! not bad

all insurance companys would pay out the 3rd party if your at fault ! if your not at fault your insurance would want to claim from the 3rd partys insurance ! thats what insurance is for, more so to cover other people to make a claim agaist you ....

bellend im a trader and i know insurance inside out, the 20k is the maximum my insurance will pay me out if i make a claim, ie if i own or am in the perssetion of a £200grand bently and i write it off they will only pay me out a maximum of 20k, this 20k figure can be upped at any time, but not lowered untill my policy ends.

also any car i own or am in the possetion of can be moddified in anyway, i do not need to inform my insurance of this, nor does it affect my primium ! the only thing/car/s i can not drive is ammerican cars as this was an optional extra at a cost, i didnt want this on my policy as i will never drive buy or own a yank car.

21 to go on the policy. Basically it could go on for work hours only. I drive courtesy cars to and from work but not other times. I have to admit to doing it after one boss said he"d phoned and specifically asked if I could drive work cars at all times but after getting pulled over I got my other boss to check it out fully and basically I had two extremely lucky escapes.

It's a good policy to have, as u can jump in and out of any car and not worrie .....

Never thought it was that flexible for personal cars and even if you can roll like that, don't you have to do it with these on?

Dont need trade plates unless it has no tax as i took a new VW Golf out for test drive with tax and no traders plates..

For a start you picked a bad choice of car to start track driving imo.. But as you have it and have pulled it to pieces..

Roll cage ( full not a fanny half cage )
Big brakes ( or good quality disks and pads
Move battery to boot
remove air con and all associated parts..
relocate washer bottle to boot..
change bonnet and wings for carbon/ fiber glass copies..
lower on coilovers of good quality and dampening adjustable
carbon fibre bucket seats
and proper harnesses
a decent full exhaust manifold back
air filter with cold air feed..
get it rolling roaded and set up properly
front splitter
good quality helment and race suit ( as you dont want to burn in a fire lol )
maybe race logic traction control

The list my friend is endless with out a budget and without knowing what you really want to do no advice can be given..

And please please please please don't write a thread in capitals is very f**king annoying

All the best

Im not sure they would bother with the fact he has no dash, he does still have the speedo's and there are no loose wires hanging around stop his vision, iv got a mate with a full stripped car and the police have pulled him twice now and never said anything about no dashboard however they did ask about the insurance knowing about the mods to the car.

Maty u said about your bonnet, well why dont you look at a carbon fibre one, that would save you a lot of weight, get rind of the lifter and put bonnet pins on. I think nw that every mod you do now has to take in the fact that it needs to reduce weight and work better so your breaks when yu uprate them need to work a lot better but weigh less, so things like this need to be reaserched. Look into getting some light weight alloys too as bet yours arent too good being the standard. The only wheels that i now a very very light but look good too are the OZ Ultraleggera, check then out on google, think they weigh 8kg each????

techs right you only need trade plates if you have no tax !

as ive mentioned a million times i didnt buy a vr6 to track. i bought it because i did and then later decided to track it.
(I KNOW THE VR6 IS NOT THE BEST CHOICE OF CAR TO TRACK) but i have it now and its what im working with.

peej do you know where i can get carbon fibre bits ?

im not 100% but i thought as long as you have indicators, speedo and there are no dangerous edges it was legal to have no dash,
basically its legal if it passes and mot ! and in an mot the only thing they check on your dash is the lights ! and by law it has to show a speedo ? i supposse the only real way to find this out for sure is to get pulled up a few time ! saying that i havent been pulled up in about 3 years !

the problem i have moding this car is is not the money its the time doing the mods as i work all the hours god sends and i work shift work ! so im just gonna plod along, get some tips off you guys and do what i can when i can.......

also any car i own or am in the possetion of can be moddified in anyway, i do not need to inform my insurance of this, nor does it affect my primium ! the only thing/car/s i can not drive is ammerican cars as this was an optional extra at a cost, i didnt want this on my policy as i will never drive buy or own a yank car.

So your a car trader that can't drive any Fords, Chrysler etc?

Sorry mate now 100% sure where you can get them from, best bet is to keep your ears to the ground and siv through the classifieds on here and ebay. However i did find this though, i would email the guy asking how  much it weighs as it doesnt say, just to compare it against a standard one.

PS, I sugested a lighter bonnet, as did others, you say you want a vented bonnet, these guys kill two birds with on stone, 3 types of heavily vented fibreglass bonnets at 250 notes each.

Surely you should concentrate on lightening that front end up. Or swap out the vr for a 1.8t lump.
Just a sugestion like. And also maybe look for carbonfibre wings?

Post by: golf-sib on 02 January 2011, 20:53
Thought the vr6 only weighed 140kg without the gearbox, didn't think the 1.8T weighed much less, prob close to similar weight by the time you add the turbo on and the pipework? If anything a twin turbo'd vr6 would be ideal

Getting lighter components like alloys, such as "SSR Competition-H", then try and replace any external panels with lighter ones. Getting lighter battery as well, such as braile batteries. Uprate bushes like dogbone, this will increase cabin vibrations but reduce wheel hop. Smooth airbox out or induction kit. Full catback exhaust system with 2.5", upgrade camshafts to like 264degrees, this will prob give you the biggest bang for your buck on a N/A car

The 2.0 16v lump is lighter than the vr6.
The 1.8T lump is not much lighter than a vr6.

right i get it ! so like (golf-sib) said the ideal v-dub would be a turbo vr6 ! how true is this ? would the turbo on a vr6 compensate for the heavy weight ? and how would it compare to the 1.8t or the 2.0 16v with a turbo on it ?
Title: Re: (((((VR6 STANDARD - TO - VR6 TRACK ))))))
Post by: Peej1981 on 02 January 2011, 21:13
Turbo vr6 would be good but a charger one would be better in my opion just because you have the power there whilst yu have lag on the turbo, plus a turbo can run out of puff so all your power is in the middle. Im not saying turbo's are crap i just think on a track a charger might be better as your not having to keep the revs high to keep the turbo spooling.
The other issue i would be thinking is what ever you through in the engine from turbo to charger is where to mount the intercooler for maximum air flow plus you really need to have the pipes short and stright with as little turns as possible, too much pipe work will mean too much lag, you need to have the air as free and easy flowing as possible.

Really looking forward to seeing this when it is done, should be goood mate.

All figures from Autocar

Golf GTI 8V     1060kg
Golf GTI 16V   1160kg
Golf VR6         1230kg

A VR lump is a lot heavier than a ABF

ARGH.  Your complete moronic nature is making my eyes bleed when I read these threads.

DO NOT attach harnesses (no doubt you'll buy 2" wide 4-point collarbone-snappers) to a rear strut brace.

Strut brace: braces the suspension strut towers

Harness bar in roll cage: used for attaching harness shoulder straps.

right i shall do this in simple terms

1, CAPITALS on forums is known as SHOUTING - thus impolite - an unwritten rule, but it has been mentioned in a few of your threads and perhaps you have missed it.

2, you have asked for advice, and they are all answering it, all be it in their own unique ways, ( you learn these over time )  but if its something you dont like you START SHOUTING AGAIN AND THE MUGGING OFF commences.

3,  even when its sound advice, it appears ( to me anyway ) that if you dont like it you get all abusive and the swearing and telling people to fcuk off - not a good way to get further help

4 the biggest thing, this is an open forum, people have the right to give positive and negative feedback - thats how it works

and remember

this place can and will save you a fortune in help, tips, discounts, assistance etc etc etc   but a LOT of the people answering have their own way of doing it.

if you dont like the way they post IGNORE it, rather than rising to it.

you have a lot more to GAIN this way compared to the knowledge you will MISS OUT on otherwise

Im trying to give you advice bud.. DH is well known for giving advice even if he is blunt in doing it he is a knowledgeable man especially on track cars..

Don't put harnesses on a strut brace you need a cage with a harness bar.. a normal general rear strut brace is sh!te as its just bolted on.. where i would recommend just getting one made up and welded on as then it will really STIFFEN up the rear end..

A cage would be one of the first things on my list.. also i like cages with door bars.. harness bars.. bulk head bars.. pretty much every kind of bar except one that sells alcohol... they aren't expensive for what they do and one day may save your life..

I tihnk its good taking a not great car and working to get it to track worthy and a mk3 set up properly and 'properly' being the key word can handle well on a track.. At the moment if its just for a laugh then your doing well.. if you want to embarass some people then you need to do all the things that have been listed..

Also get some switches put in there a track is not a track car without some nice flick switches

Also have you considered a plumbed in fire extinguisher bay and cabin ?? or just bay..

I go to a few Drift days with my friends who drift and they're cars are looked at quite closely and everything other than extinguisher is checked even battery cut.. bolts holding a wheel on.. etc etc.. so if serious its a lot of work buddy.. and more importantly a lot of money..

Forget about power and weight just stick it on a track and see what it feel like..

And DH is telling you that this is the incorrect way to mount a harness bar. you need a proper roll cage with a purpose built harness bar. look at proper racing cars and see where the harness is mounted instead of cars from max power

And i'm sure DH would call the person who owns that car a moron too, he clearly has way more experience with racing cars on tracks than you do. Why don't you do yourself a favour and get your head out of your arse so you can read and understand the advice that you are being given

:afro:

I told you  DH would give you some stick but at the end of the day, LOADS of advice has been put in front of you.

You start following and you'll gain the respect of everyone.

Strut brace harnesses are stupid as everyone has said, I don't want to go into it as I'm sure I don't know every reason why, other then the fact of why you would want your seatbelts on the suspension turrets? Also from what I've been reading off DH, it's something to do with the angles? I assume you won't want to be putting pressure on the upright of the seat, if that gives way then I'd imagine at the wrong angle of belt then your back would too.

The fibreglass panels are a good idea but you need to make a priority list.

My main priorities would be in random order:

PROPER CAGE, do much research and listen to the track day "experts" here.
Suspension, coilovers are great but are they really better then a dedicated shock/spring kit with damper adjustments?
Brakes, how old is the car? Does it have the 280mm brakes? Would it be worth upgrading to the 288mm with DECENT pads, discs and fluid? Would it be worth going 312mm? How serious are you?
TYRES. No point in doing it all on budget tyres is there?

Then I'd look into some decent seats. Again, I've not got a great idea on these, ask the track boys.

Wheels, you want some nice, light wheels right?

THEN when you've got ALL that sorted, I'd look at lighter panels, you seem set on chassis work, before you've got a cage?   and the engine mods. Turbo if you're really into it maybe.

Your budget will depend how serious you are, as will how quick it will be.

Chuck a grand at it and you may have a bit of a toy.

Chuck 10 grand (at a complete guess) and you may have a bit of a weapon.

Lovely pm..

answer the question then dick head !

surprised its not in caps...

On here you might not know anyone but you get an idea what there like in the way they express themselfs. How they build their posts, how they put themselfs across, how helpful they are etc. You have people here trying to help and your still acting like a c u n t.

I'm not building a track car but i have had the fact that I need a harness bar drummed in to my head and not attach my harness to the rear strut brace because its dangerous i might just go get one...for the sake of it!

Again... I'm not having a dig but spending 5K on that is not really going to get you that much. The engine set ups you are talking about would be at least 4K.

Which would leave you
Box, Brakes, Cage, Suspension, Wheels, Tyres and Body to do on £1,000  ???

You can't scrimp when you pimp mate

If you had £15,000 to throw at it would still be miles behind this at the end of a lap.

Like I say, I aint having a dig but if you have £5,000 go and buy a half decent built track car and go enjoy it

been thinking about this... I reckon, imho, that one of the best investments you can make when going onto the track is making sure you get a good instructor to teach you how to drive... a good driver in a bad car will be much better than a bad driver in a good car!

of course this does mean that you will have to listen to their advice without getting all shouty... think you could manage that?

Mat..... When you've got a minute, start a thread in dub rides which is really where this should have started in the first place, put this one to bed.. Before you do though have a quick look at some others and see how they flow and the sort of stuff people post up.  Its the best place to post your progress and to get positive feedback. Also it's a bit give and take on here so others will appreciate what you have to say about their car and you are more likely going to attract them to look at yours.

Dub rides is a child board in the VW Related chat section.

Best advice I can give is try not to ask everything in one go, you want to get things done so take it slow and post your issues as you find them then act on the advise accordingly.  By the end of it you might just get the car you are aiming for and a nice log of everything you have done as opposed to a thread full of sh*t which sadly this has turned into.

There were a few people on here that found some really good but very very cheap DV cams that can easily be placed in or outside a car...  I think there were like £30 or something stupid but the quality was really good... I believe Horney and DH who both track cars have them.

You started well last time but it quickly went Pete Tong.

Like before, post what you've done so far (maybe copy and paste the good bits from this thread).

Each time you do something, post it up, people here love pictures of progress.  Post your plans, if you're not sure if your plans are right, ask, if you get stick, think about why, if it seems out of order, don't bother rising to it.  Most of us can see whats good and bad about whats said....

Best thing is not to try and cover every question you have in one go, question stuff as you plan to do it and you'll find the whole process become methodical yet usefull and you will will hopefully end up where you want to be in no time at all!

Are the cam chains quiet, at those miles you might want to look at replacing them before driving it hard.

Did you not say that when you where going through the paper work about what has been done to the engine that the chain had been done????
If so when was it done as it shouldnt be tappety, like you said the engine is going to be the last thing you are doing, just make sure that you really lok after it then if you are going to take it around a track until you do something with it, last thing you need is it blowing up on you

Look, we obviously don't like each other.

But please please please prioritize stuff. Before buying fancy steering wheels or vented hoods you don't need, sort stuff that needs sorting first like the tappety engine, any rust/welding needed, safety equipment (that includes a proper roll cage with a proper harness bar, seat, helmet, fire extinguisher) and then you can move to upgrading it for track use. You've done the first and most important thing already, stripped it, so now you can start adding upper and lower strut braces along with any engine mods you may want to do. Don't spend money pointlessly on parts you really don't need like that bonnet. You're better off spending it on track driving lessons or a trackday different than brands hatch or even a set of trackday tyres.

yes peej it was done a year ago if i remember rightly !

khare the plan is to get bits and pieces as i find them online, there is no rust and/or welding to be done ! the roll cage, harnese, strut braces, and seats or next on the list,
i have got the poly windows, steering wheel and fire extinguishers. the bonnet was just a thought, i do want it but i will leave that till ive done the more important things. the engine other than the very light tappety sound seems in good nik,so ill plod along and enjoy untill she goes pop. when i have done everything i want to do,ill then sort the engine out hopefully before it lets go, but saying that i do think the engine is sound !

len for now im gonna just leave the wheels that are on it, it has yokohama tyres they look like semi slicks, so ill see how i get on with them !

I think that you are defo going in the right direction and at least you are sorting out setting the car up first before looking into crazy engine mods. It is a good idea to maybe look into buying another set of wheels the same as your but with some road tyre and swap them around, the last thing you want is to keep paying for tyres after each track session. Remember the semi's will run their tread down a lot fast then normal tyres and as yours are a high end brand they wont be cheap to replace.
Your engine shouldnt go bang if it has been looked after, which by the sounds of it the previous owner has, just make sure that it is serviced often, when i say service i dont mean change oil, plugs and clean the air filter, try to get it up onto a ramp and check all the bushes for play, steering rack and arms, brake pipes, discs, pads etc etc. Really go to home on each service, this way you might catch something that before breaks.

Actually thinking about it have you cheack all the bushes on the car, i would advice doing it and maybe upgrading them to poly bush ones. Such a simple thing like the bushes will help it corner faster plus they will last longer too.

Hang on a sec, you plan to use your current tyres?

One good track session, what you driving home on?

Aye brands hatch is litrally one road up from him, but if he plans other tracks then the track only rims/tires would be a good idea

Sensible head on here for a moment to EVERYONE,  and Matty, this is a Viewpoint from a NON fence sitter.

Are we not all  getting a BIT carried away ?

YOu have got the car to a  good starting point,  and with some fine tuning of the wiring etc post dash removal etc and a check over of the basics as per DHs post in ya trackdays post.

BUT, shouldnt we get ONE track day done and dusted before we go splashing more cash on spare wheels etc etc etc.

Why some will ask,

A few reasons,

1, its a VR6
2, its a mk3
3, never done a car track day before

So as its now at a Usable point, i would do just that, USE IT, do one track day and make sure its for you.

Again, just me thinking that way, oh well,

indeed. from my admittedly not massive track experience ( 5 trackdays and a ringtrip) and chatting to others i have come to the conclusion that theres no real point to building a full on, expensive track car. At the end of the day, you wont be spotted by redbull racing talent spotters, noones timing you, and as long as your going quick enough to have fun then its all good. A standard vr stripped will be fine for this. When you start to master it and want a bit more speed, then start looking at upgrades, or just buy a scooby and start the learning curve all over again.

And remember - don't wear a race suit unless it's got your name stitched into the back of it.

Otherwise everyone will be asking 'who's that c*nt in the race suit?'

I just took the rear seats and some trim out of my Golf before its first track outing.  Made sure it wasn't leaking any fluids and tipped up and drove on.

Would love to go onto the track, is it a open day and if so how much for the track. As I remember prept did something last year and that was quite cheap and then there was that moron that almost crashed into the stand in the car park, do you go prept, as I found it a waste of time on the majority whenever I went but the corrado owners from down south are the only good bunch I've seen down there

Track days are generaly pretty safe.  If you've done a number of them on a bike you should really know that.

If you have a proper cage you won't need strut braces, you're f*cking obsessed with strut braces.
