Title: New GTI is already in UK. Would you wait?
Post by: jojo13 on 31 December 2010, 00:30
I put an order for a new GTI at the end of October and I have been waiting for a build week since. This forum and you guys have kept me going. Yesterday I rang the dealership to ask about it and today I was told that my car is in a UK port and will be with them in 3-4 weeks! And was asked if I wanted the car earlier!
What would you do? I was thinking delivery late March, now it seems I can have it 2 months earlier. I guess I should really wait for a new plate, shouldn't I?
I have also started worrying why it's so early. I mean, when was it built? Will it have the LED backlights and daytime running LEDs like the other 2011 GTI's? Can I object if it doesn't?

All companies have disclaimers stating that spec is liable to change. If something drastic changed like they no longer offered manual cars and all were now DSG then you would be able to reject it but I doubt you would have any comeback for small changes not unless you specifically stated at time of ordering.

I'd imagine you will have the rear LED lights but I'm not sure if the front LED lights are actually out on production cars yet?

If I was in that situation I certainly wouldn't want the car just sitting in a compound for ages or hang about waiting on a new plate. If it was only a few days away or a couple of weeks for the new registrations I'd hang off but not months.

Why is it taking 3 - 4 weeks to get to your garage if it is already in the UK? Now that would intrigue me!!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You should be led on the rear as mine is two months old and has them, but I think you have to order xenons to get them on the front?

I'd get it asap and start enjoying it and again 3-4 weeks seems a very long time from port to dealer.

Welcome to the forum.

Personally, I wouldn't wait but it shouldn't take 3-4 weeks, mine took 4 days to complete import and registration formalities from port. I'd give the dealer a firm nudge on that.

According to my dealer, all stock they've received from late October has been fitted with rear LEDs so it would be unlikely that yours would come fitted with the previous style light cluster.

Regarding getting a new reg, I've never really understood the enthusiasm for getting the latest plate (I'm not from the UK). Having a new plate draws attention from vindictive and jealous sorts, the type who run keys down the side of cars but yes, I get the valuation argument but just let the car do the talking!

Just take the car dont do bother about reg plate, cars these days look old anyway with new style plates.Wellcome to the forum

Heart would say get the car as soon as possible and enjoy it, but with regard to the registration, it depends how long you are planning to keep it, when I traded my car in the dealer told me that September to March registrations i.e. 60 are less desirable than the March to September registrations i.e. 10.
You could always go for a personalised number plate

MY2011 cars were being produced from around July onwards so yours will have the latest spec like the Doc's

I certainly wouldn't wait 3-4 weeks just for a new plate!! Not after spending out 25K plus on a new motor!

I got rear LED's on my golf when it was delivered in september so do not think that will be an issue. I am not sure about the front LED's with xenons though.

On the delivery front I had the same thing with my mk 5 when it was due to arrive 2nd week of feb and turned up 2nd week of jan and I could not leave it sitting there till March to get it on a new plate.

Congratulations and hope to see the piccys soon.

Unlike others i would wait.
This is why
WEATHER!
Most the bad weather is over by March and you say they offered it 4-5 weeks time so thats end of Jan beginning of feb anyway. So its only 4 weeks later than they have offered and you get an 11 plate.

As for LEDs. It will have rear LEDs for certain.
If you ordered the front Xenons it depends on its build week if it has the LED DRL ones or not. IIRC its build week 47 on that get these lights. So yours is close.

People have asked why the wait for delivery if its in the UK. I know the port of tyne were some come in have a huge backlog due to the weather and im sure the other two ports they come in at Grimsby and the one down south do as well. Beginning of the year dealers often have backlog of cars to get out so its probably been pushed to the back of the que because it was not suppose to be here yet.

That's a good point regarding the weather Snoopy but it depends on where you live I guess..... I'm basking in the sunshine here in west sussex it's about 6.5 deg C. I shall be washing my car in the minute wearing only my ' Mankini '

I picked my car car up in Feb last year and didn't really worry to much about the weather however I was super paranoid about all the bloody potholes with those Monza Shadows.

My heart would say pick the car up soon as if its ready but if you've got your sensible head on it probably worth waiting for the new reg.

Thanks everyone, for your advice and making me feel so welcome.

I have other (personal) reasons for waiting until March but after reading your posts, they seem to matter less. And I plan to keep the car for a bit, at least four years, so I shouldn't get too hanged up on the reg. thing. I was even considering getting a GT11 plate, but I've come to my senses.

Yes, I have ordered the Xenons. I am pleased to be getting the rear LEDs and not too bothered if I don't get the front DRL LEDs. I think it's probably my favourite combination, anyway. But you have reassured me regarding the early arrival, thanks.

As for the travel from port, I guess I just assumed that there must be some backlog. The dealership is in Manchester and so weather has been an issue. I will probably ask about it anyway.

So I'll think about it and then make up my mind but I don't think I will be able to wait. I'll keep you posted. And I will post a picture as soon as I get my hands on it. It's shadow blue, with 18" Monzas. Not many pictures of them around. I've had to make do with VW Germany's configurator.

 thats arrived quick! Was this a fresh order or did the dealer amend the spec on a previously ordered car? Just phoned the dealer to see where myn is and asked for the salesman I dealt with and got "he no longer works here" ...  :undecided:

I know. It was a fresh order. I don't know if I got lucky with some other cancelation in the system. I'm not quite sure how the VW order system works. I'm not sure anyone does. That's certainly one thing that they could improve. Wouldn't it be great if they could have a system to track the build/delivery of your car through the internet. Even better with pictures...

Dealer mentioned to me an 11 plate over a 60 would be worth approx £500 more when it comes to resale.

You can have so much fun making private plates with 11 too. A lad i know has just bought a couple that basically read stinky and fallova

Buying a new car means you're gonna lose big money for sure, I'd reduce that loss by waiting for the new plate.

My company stop all of their new cars being delivered in January and wait for the new plate to 'help' with depreciation

Just looking at the DVLA site and there seems to be an abundance of GT11 options.

Are GT11 prefixes cool?   It's going to be some time till we see them again

I don't mean to gloat but I think I hold a bit of record in a 9 week turnaround from order date to when I picked her up - ordered mid Sept and collected end of November.  Almost too good to be true given some of the other experiences I've read about on here since joining.

Mine also has the rear LEDs as well so shouldn't be a problem by the sounds of it.

The more I read on this forum the more I suspect mine was diverted from a cancellation elsewhere.  It even came with a couple of large extras on it which I didn't order or pay for.

I'd get her now if I was you - the perfect way to start 2011

jojo: Love Shadow Blue. Snoops will have a twin at last.

I think I am just a sucker for cars that "change colour" with the light/viewing angle. My first car was a white 1976 beetle which I had lacquered to give a very subtle pearlescent effect. In grey cloudy weather it was just a white beetle but in the sunshine it had a v. slight purple hue which was just beautiful. But what I liked about it was how it changed. On most days I wouldn't notice it, but when the sun came out I would fall in love all over again. Much like with a significant other, I hear. So I am kind of looking forward to that feeling again.

I also like that it's a bit dull when the sun's not out. One one of the posts Snoopy linked to (thanks!) someone said it looks like a TDI and that suits me. That's what I want people to think when I come up behind them. I did have a long think about the wheels, though. I can see what people don't like about the black Monza's with the Shadow Blue. But my little brother just said "Those Shadows look so cool!" and he's right. And the though that my little brother thinks my wheels are cool, well you can't beat it. Besides, you can't really see them on a rear view mirror. And this way I have an extra incentive to try something different when winter wheel time comes.

I checked with my dealer yesterday. No build date yet. Order was also placed at end of October.

2 weeks later I added Xenons to the order. The dealer had great difficulty changing the order as it was around build week 45 and the order code for Xenons had changed because of the DRLs being added.

The fact that you recieved no build date does make it sound like a redirected order.

ARGHHH...After calling my dealer on Thursday morning for an update on delivery dates etc and having no reply since, I decided to go to the garage and see them in person. After finding out my original salesman had been sacked I have now been told that the car will not be with me until end of March / beg of April! Even more frustrating is that I was told I could have the car in Feb if I wanted it but I decided to wait for the plate. Apparently the car is in build process now but I find this hard to believe as 3 months to get from factory to me seems a little steep to say the least! Can anyone in the know enlighten me on shipping times and how long it takes them to build one of these damn things? Only thing keeping me going is it should now come with DRL's

Thanks
Liam

It only takes around 2 hours to physically assemble the car but it may very well be moving around the factory for several more hours / days.
Once it is built it can take anywhere between 2 weeks to 4 weeks to then be shipped and transported to the dealer.
