Title: heavy steering
Post by: carrie on 16 February 2005, 20:14
took the golf out today incase it was getting jealous at all the attention the csi has been getting.
how heavy is the steering, i forgot it was that bad, but after the pas on the bmw i really noticed it, think i need a pas conversion.
on the good side it was fun except the gear leaver is so much lower.
what pas unit would i need for this to convert it?

I know what you mean, when I've driven newer cars and get back in mine I realise how cr@p the gear change is and how stiff my clutch pedal is, but I still love it !

As for the PAS, not sure what you need but there is a firm somewhere that does these conversions for over 1k I think, but I can't remember who.  Not much help there really was I.

I might be looking into putting PAS onto a 1.3 mk2. might prove too costly though. let me know how your findings come about carrie. I'm sure others have done it no problem.

the bmw is 3 years older than the golf, my clutch is quite light though.

thinking outside the box here:

1) disable the PAS on the BMW.
2) join a gym

:) I know what you mean though. took 1906 out on Sunday - wonderful performance - appalling heaviness on the steering.

You say you have left the golf standing for a while ?

Have you checked the tire pressures in the front wheels ?

I know there will be a noticable difference between PAS and not , but you never know a couple of PSI makes a hell of a diff .

once you drive it for a while, you get used to the heaviness of the steering, to the point where you do every thing one handed!!

the one handed thing might be your way mix, but i save things like that fr home
the tyre pressure is about 2-3 psi over to try to keep steering lighter.
tin the car is nearly 1.5 ton so it would make the goolf seem light but  when i hit the first bend i fear i may regret it

i remember taking 1906 out near the end of its rebuild. hadn't driven her for 2-3 years. accelerated into a corner and forgot that you really had to "steer" the car. but your self preservation instinct kicks in fairly quickly.

strange thing is - although 1906 only comes out to play once a month or so, you do start to remember subconsciously to use alot more force when steering.

1906VC is my Mk2 16v Campaign that i've owned since she was 4 years old. The plate was bought about 1 month after i got her.

She did her time as a "day to day" car until 2002, and then got rebuilt. So far, totally new running gear, suspension, body work, interior, and a total engine rebuild with a 1mm oversize rebore due to uneven wear. I'm not preperard to track her, so all i can say about the performance is that she can do a standing 80mph and accelerate to 120mph (all gps) in 5th gear in under 19 seconds which i'm told is quite fast.

Finally, 1906 lives in a garage, is brought out to play 1-2 times a month, has new 15" Castellets being refurbed, non EU complaint BF Goodriches imported in a few weeks to kinda finish off phase 1 of the rebuild.

I remember thinking how heavy the steering was on my non PAS mk3 when i got it... But after changing wheels and adding a 320mm steering wheel it became just funny.. Makes you much better at parking though... if you dont get it right first time you have to have a little rest before trying again! Gym definately cheaper than conversion!
