Title: Wheel size question.
Post by: alexoc on 19 December 2010, 12:05
Can anyone tell me if the following size wheels are correct for the mk6 GTI?

They are Genuine Bbs Ch 026 19"
PCD= 5x112 vag fitment.
8" x19"
ET 50
57.1 mm centrebore
tyres are 245/35/19

Tyres may be a bit wide?

Thanks for any help.

I'd say they are spot on.
My Genuine BBS CH025s in 18" are 8" x19", ET 50.
They fit just fine with 225/40/19 tyres.

My VW Racing wheels are 8.5" x19", ET 52.
They fit fine with 225/35/19 tyres..but they are pretty close to the arch.

I think 245s are too wide, I know the VWR wheels with 235s on *can* rub...so I'd have thought 245s would cause problems.

^^^ Agreed, the wheels are the perfect size, the tyres however are large Audi sized not Golf fitment.

I'm looking at a set of 18" replicas which are PCD 5 x 112 and ET45.
Will these be ok with a set of 225 x 40 x 18 winter tyres?

The online supplier says they'll be fine - but obviously they want a sale!

What width Pete?
You may just be OK on an 8" wide wheel...no chance if they are 8.5s.

I'm still confused by the ET in general though.
My standard wheels are ET50.  Whats the difference between that and ET45?

Here's an article explaining ET (offset)

The wheel offset is described by the term ET, which is from the German word ' Einpresstiefe', which means insertion depth.

Most wheels have a positive offset. The following sites explains it quite well and with diagrams.
A wheel ET45 8x18" should be fine for your R.

http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/wheel-offset.htm

Hope these help.

Thanks for the links...

So the fist guide says generally a 5mm - 7mm difference should be ok.
If I'm going from 50 to 45 - does that mean that the wheels will be 5mm further in the arches?
And an ET60 would make the wheels 'stick out' and extra 10mm?

'If you reduce the amount of positive ET on the wheel then the vehicles track is widened and vice versa if the ET number is reduced. Straying too far from the original offset can be detremental as fouling to the suspension and bodywork can occur as well as eccess strain on wheel bolts or studs'.

No they would stick out 5mm more

Hmmm... it seems near impossible to find a set of aftermarket reasonably priced wheels that have the correct offset.
45 seems to be the most common one available.

p3eps i posted a site link for you back on the 28th Nov on your R forum when you were asking about alloys. It is a very useful website to work out if it sticks out more or in more and other things.

Am I looking at the wheel inboard and wheel outboard increase for that?  Its -0.196, and the tyre width difference is -0.39... so do these cancel each other out?

Found a set of Skoda wheels with a 51 offset with everything else correct.
They're 7.5j though - which I guess is better for winter tyres anyway?

What tyre size would go on a 18 x 7.5 wheel?  Still a 225 x 40 x 18?

If the ET45 fit and cause no problems then I'd probably rather have them.

Tire & Wheel inboard and outboard tell you how much inward and outward difference there is to your reference wheel/tyre combo.

The standard 18s on the R are 7.5" x 18 ET50 with 225x40x18 so more or less same as the skodas.

Snoops:
The 8" rim will stretch the tyre slightly in comparison to a 7.5" one.
Can one keep the tyre pressure the same as with a 7.5" rim?

I've always run the pressures at roughly the same as OEM, despite wider wheels - assuming the tyre didth is the same.
But I mess about a bit from there...I use the standard pressures as a base and adjust to get the characteristics I want.
Usually, fronts slightly lower than standard for 2 people and rears up near full load pressures.
Title: Re: Wheel size question.
Post by: Exonian on 20 December 2010, 06:26
The tyre pressures are calculated by VW to allow for axle weights and the sort of speeds the car is designed to be driven at. Therefore within reason the pressures stay the same whatever size wheels and tyres you run.
Obviously a bit of experimentation will only help your personal requirements but don't vary the pressures too far from recommended pressures. If you have a serious accident I'm pretty sure an insurance assessor will check tread depth, tyre condition, speed ratings and pressures these weasels will want to duck out of any payments they can get away with.

On an 8" wide wheel, ET50, 225s sit just inside the arches, and there is no rubbing.

A mate bought some 8.5" wide wheels, ET45 and they plainly stuck out...so be sold them without even putting tyres on.

But, I can't imagine 5mm more 'out' on my BBS causing too much of a problem...however, I can't assure you they'd not catch, as not all wheel offsets are as accurate as the maker would suggest!

Personally, I'd find some ET50s or go with the 7.5" wide Skoda wheels, as winter wheels to gove a little more protection from the tyre.
But I'd be fairly confident that the ET45 8" wide wheels would be OK, as I reckon they'd sit about the same place in the arch - relative to the wing - as my 8.5" x 19" VWRs do....and I run 225 wide tyres, where Neil runs 235s on his and doesn't get any outwer rubbing.

Judging by how many people never check their tyre pressures regularly, or only "pump them up when the wheel (!) looks flat" I'd say a reasonable variation in pressures won't be an issue....within the limits of being sensible, obviously.

If people want to really set the pressures accurately, they need to measure the tyre temperatures and set pressure and wheel camber to suit.
Yes, I'm that sad...I do!   :nerd:

Well today I ordered the Skoda Zenith wheels.  4 almost new (ex demonstrator but no marks) for £375 including shipping.
They're pretty basic, but should look reasonable on the golf.  Plus they ALMOST have the ideal fitment at 5 x 112 with an ET51 offset.
I'll get them powdercoated black when they arrive, and try and get a set of tyres ordered tonight for them.

My next task is to get a set of VW center badges for them.  Any ideas where I can get these?  I don't know if they'd be the same size as the ones out of my current wheels or Monza's or something.  Its a possibility though since they're VAG wheels.

Glen - did you get yours powdercoated by PPS at Inverurie?  A guy at work had his Fiesta ST ones done there and they removed all his kerb dings and re-finished them in black for £35 per wheel.

Brilliant value: Vredestein Wintrac xtreme, W rated, £136 from mytyres.

Best tyres IMO: Michelin PA3, W rated, £246.90 or Conti 830P, V rated, £202.69. Both from pneus.

All 225/40 R18 92 XL.

Hopefully you can find these cheaper.

That's a sensible move there p3eps... and the alloys are actually quite nice and will look the part in black (Satin or Gloss Black). Are they 18's?

Out of interest how's the Golf R been so far this winter seeing as its 4wd?

Out of interest how's the Golf R been so far this winter seeing as its 4wd?

18" x 7.5, so I get an inch more rubber!  I'll probably go for gloss black so they'll have a similar look to my current wheels.
The 4wd has been brilliant so far - and I haven't had any problems yet (touch wood!)
The ESP is brilliant too, as when it flashes, the car corrects itself if its started fish tailing.  You feel the rear wheels correcting it.
The winter wheels / tyres are more to save my 19" talladegas and also to give me a little more confidence when steering than anything else.  I sometimes find I turn the wheels, but the car keeps going in a straight line!!

Which tyres?

Brilliant value: Vredestein Wintrac xtreme, W rated, £136 from mytyres.

I think these are the ones I'm going to go for - and thanks for the heads up on mytyres.  They seem to be cheaper than anywhere else I've seen so far.  I guess it depends if they actually have stock though.
The Vredestein Wintrac get great reviews and and relatively cheap in comparison to others.  Perhaps the premium Michelins are better - but I can't imagine them being worth almost double the money?
Title: Re: Wheel size question.
Post by: am1w on 20 December 2010, 20:48
You are absolutely right. The law of diminishing returns does apply to some extent with the Michelins and most other tyres in comparison to the Verdesteins, although the Michelins are considered the best overall winter tyre in the USA.

BTW, the Verdesteins were approximately £180 about a month ago on the mytyres website.
Brilliant value now.

I almost ordered a set for about £158 each before I read your post.  I just hope they actually have some in stock.  It seems most suppliers are increasing their prices with the snow - so I'm surprised at them coming down.
The Verdesteins get rave reviews in Germany, so for that price they're certainly worth a punt!  Lets face it, anything with the correct compound is going to be much better than the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's that I'm running just now in 235 x 35 x 19!

I only found out about the Verdesteins today whilst trolling all the tyre sites as I often do.
I had already bought and paid for the Michelins this morning and could not be arsed to cancel the order. I have always set my heart on these Michelins but they only became available in the size I wanted last week. Also, their price has dropped since one month ago. At one stage they were over £320 on mytyres!

You've got a fabulous deal on the Verdesteins. Can't see them dropping any further in price.

By the time I get the wheels powdercoated its going to be 2011 before I get them on the car.  I'm away for new year anyway - so my car will be having a well deserved warm break in the garage for 10 days!

I'm sure the Michelins will be great tyres and are a trusted brand - but I just can't justify the extra cost on something that'll be on the car for another 2-3 months (until next November!!).  I'm struggling to justify the £375 for the wheels, the £140 for the powdercoating and the £550 for tyres... but I'm hoping I'll keep the car for a few of years and can use the wheels for a few of winters.

Pretty sure they'll be the standard VAG 'big' centre cap size.
The other option is the standard 52ish mm 'small' VAG centre cap...but I think that's just on the 5x100mm wheels.
Fairly sure the standard VW centres will fit.

I tend to take them in cleaned up with a file/sander to get rid of the worst of the mess...and I think I'm normally £45 for a 18" wheel.
The price depends on the size.
I think I paid £40 each for some Mk3 GTI wheels in metallic sparkle silver for Mothers new Fabia winter wheels, just last month.
My 18" BBS were £45 per wheel.

Pretty sure they'll be the standard VAG 'big' centre cap size.
The other option is the standard 52ish mm 'small' VAG centre cap...but I think that's just on the 5x100mm wheels.
Fairly sure the standard VW centres will fit.

I'll wait until I get the wheels so I can measure the current badges.  I asked the chap selling them to measure them, but he said they looked like a different fitment to VW ones.
I think we maybe get a discount at PPS as we use them with work on a regular basis.

Seems they don't have the tyres anymore!

When searching, did you find anywhere else that had them at bargain prices Asker?

Damn. Typical of mytyres. I gave up on them ages ago.

I'll troll around later to see if I can find some.

Pete,

There's a lad on Eastside selling some brand New Cooper Snow Tyres 225 40 18 XL 92V.

"Brand New Cooper Snow Tyres 225 40 18 XL 92V
by djhorace
I have a few of these I managed to get in addition to the ones on my car.
These are rocking horse sh*t right now and were for sale in Aberdeen for just under £200 (each)
£150 a tyre."

In Aberdeen now...not sold as far as I can tell.
Any use?

I ordered the Conti's off peus for £202 each
A bit more than I wanted to pay, but at least they're a highly rated tyre.
Unlikely I'll see them this year since they're coming to my work and we're closed from 25th - 5th... but my wheels are the same too!

Thanks for the links though...

Nothing like a good pen!s clothed with rubber.
Glad you got it sorted.
Good company, better than mytyres IMO.

So now you would have spent a total of £1384!
I will have spent £1440.
Closer still!

Merry Christmas!

Don't remind me!  I didn't realise it was soooo much!!
On the plus side - my fiancee said she'd give me half for the tyres as she benefits from them too
That takes a little bit of a sting out of the total cost!

'Tis the thought that counts. I'm happy now.
I wonder when we'll get our tyres?

Unless mine come Wed, Thu or Fri (which I doubt), then I'm not going to see them until at least the 5th January when we return to work.
I'm in the same boat with the wheels too!

The wheels will need to go and get powdercoated - which I believe takes about 3 days.  My fiancee's uncle runs a car dealership and told me to take the wheels and tyres round there when I get everything and he'll have them fitted.  He'll also store my summer wheels too

Once the weather is a bit better I can take my summer wheels home one or two at a time and get them polished and waxed ready for March / April time!

I tend to miss this forum after a week or so.
Shame, as it's been directly responsible for by bluefin, winter tyres, breakdown cover, GAP insurance and RCD, not to mention screenwash, wipers etc.

Around £1500 I'd say.

I should ban myself.

Ami: You've got off reasonably lightly compared to me.
I was given an ultimatum by my family which they eventually rescinded when money changed hands.

My wheels arrived today
Well... I say arrived - but I actually stood in a DHL waiting room for about 45 mins whilst they searched for them!
They look pretty good in the flesh.  I pinged out the center caps and put them back in their boxes to take out to get powdercoated.  I think this will have to wait until next year now though.
Center caps are 55mm, so I ordered some off eBay.
I got an email saying my tyres have been dispatched also.

All looks good for getting everything at the beginning of January now!
