Title: Grand's 1.4 (NCB builder)
Post by: GrandMstRamRod on 29 November 2010, 12:20
Story starts and ends so far with VW

When i was 17 got a 300 pound mint condition red polo mk2 was wonderful until i couldn’t afford it so had to sell it that’s the early days in a nutshell

Now 19 and being the manager of a pub turning over 20k a week, time for new car then this came along

basically it’s a storm grey 1.4 bought it 2 months ago from a private seller, who was running the thing dry so picked it but noticed the day i picked it up someone had keyed the perfect body work, matching colour coded bumpers in storm grey, full service history and 2 owners before me.

(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5102/carfs.png) (http://img145.imageshack.us/i/carfs.png/)

After picking it up gave it full service and filled the tank no problems with the engine at all or anything else apart from the key scratch which needed fixing

Gave it some little mods

Painted front badge black also grills same colour as car, also tinted rear lights and front indicators and reflectors

Pictures to follow

Update

received a nice set of hella quads, from jackovw a member of the forums  for 125 pound with 2 sets of covers and 4 replacement chambers

- Bonnet bra of eBay, started getting chips on front of bonnet which was annoying.

next ideas

latest news cleaning the throttle body after buying a vag com lead but the motor at the back of the throttle body went, so got a quote for 370 pound from a garage to fix had a look round some scrappy no luck so got some help from someone on the forum who found this off eBay ended up paying 40 pound :)

Plus got some new GTI rear lights as someone smashed by back drivers side light

By grandmst (http://profile.imageshack.us/user/grandmst) at 2010-11-29

Basically that’s it so far trying to do this on a budget, this Thursday plan to change the throttle body and then give it a good run, seems a shame just having it parked up, also change rear lights to GTI ones.

Spent so far

Bonnet bra – 30
Hella quads – 125
Service – 40 for parts

Looking for some information on fixing two key scratches on body work driver’s door and panel behind, which one is 30cm one is 60cm, also a good wheel refurb company near Chester

What colour would be good with storm grey I’m thinking white what do you guys think?

Can't beat a budget build.

What is the motor on the back of the throttle body you mention?

Quite like the wheels. Think they are wolfrace. See them a lot on 6n polo's. Not sure if they were standard fit or not. I think white might be a bit of a harsh contrast against your car. A dark silver or anthracite could look good.
Title: Re: Grandmstramrod mk3 1.4 budget! comments
Post by: GrandMstRamRod on 29 November 2010, 20:39
dont quote me on this but, as far as im aware obviously you have the throttle cable that is connected to the throttle body and on the aex modes mabey others there is a little servo on the back that reads how much the valve is open by and the signal is sent to the ECU of how much petrol to put into the engine.

as this had jammed open and bust according to the ecu there is basically no engine so it kept reving and reving trying to find a signal but couldent as soon as i disconnected the wire on the top of the throttle body it idled perfectly but drive it down the road and it would cut out as of lack of petrol.

i may be right or wrong but dont quote as im not 100% sure that what it was for, still learning this stuff :)

also the idea of a dark silver or anthracite for a colour alloys would look rather sweet might go ahead with that, gonna try the wheels myself, if anyone can answer this question obviously you sand the alloy down then primer then coat it my question is the clear coat of  top is that just clear laquer to protect the alloy or something else?

good buy with the lights, I know jacko personally and the car the lights come off, mk3 wise there isn't a lot he doesn't have! I'm not a fan of the wheels myself, I'd go on the hunt for some cheap replacements if it was me, maybe some tatty estorils maybe? I had a decked storm grey vento on estorils I refurbed white, maybe this will give you some ideas?

Don't worry about it, I sold it a long time ago and it got written off about a year ago by a police car!

Post by: lewis1641 on 29 November 2010, 23:30
I take it all back. That looks awesome on estorells.

Clear coat is used to seal the paint and to add to the shine. Without clear coat the wheels will be a pain to clean and the paint will mark easily.
Title: Re: Grandmstramrod mk3 1.4 budget! comments
Post by: GrandMstRamRod on 30 November 2010, 00:36
really dude sorry to hear that looks rather sweet!

so is clear coat just laquer that you would used on body work or different!
Title: Re: Grandmstramrod mk3 1.4 budget! comments
Post by: tsr_adi on 30 November 2010, 08:30
yea same thing mate, although I will warn you, however awesome the white estorils looked on my old vento, they were VERY difficult to keep clean! I think I used about 2 coats of etch primer, 4 coats of gloss white and 4 coats of laquer, and as you can see, they came up rather well

Title: Re: Grandmstramrod mk3 1.4 budget! comments
Post by: GrandMstRamRod on 30 November 2010, 20:45
basically short story is, cleaned the throttle body, and the motor siezed up on the back so the engine ideled for 30 seconds when started up then revs would build up to 2 thousand and 3 thousand and stay inbetween theses two amounds dropping then going back up again, i knew this was broke as the butterfly valve was jammed open by the motor, when unplugging the cable ontop of the throttle body it would idel correctly.

so i buy one of ebay!

fit this new throttle body today and got these error codes

00530 butterfly valve placing he/potentiometers -G88
00518 butterfly valve potentiometers -G69
01087 basic adjustment not accomplished

fitted the new throttle body and put everything back together with the new throttle body, started it after a few
false starts to build up the pressure in the fuel line, and started perfectly after about 10 mins of running same
thing again revs automaticall build up to between 2000 and 3000 and drops and builds up again, if i disconnect
the cable on the top of the throttle body the engine dies as the ecu thinks there is no engine and stops fueling the
engine, so that is difrrent to the last one but the revs keep building up without me pressing the pedal

it has been 2 weeks know and im rather pissed off with it, anyone got any idea please!

recently nothing has changed due to a garage f**king me about, and telling me something was wrong when it wasn't i ran up a £320 bill for what was a £14.40 part.

which went on the credit card so currently i have to put sooooo much money onto that i havent been able to change anythingg!

but im not gonna stop few plans in the new year!

so sorry for not providing regular updates!

plans for 2011

i been having a few ideas and thinking what to do in 2011 my plans are as follows some feedback would be good to see what you guys think!

- vento front end grill and headlamps
- obviously some coilovers
- paint alloys as of doing this on budget
- roller car mat black or roller same storm grey!

so what should i do! ???
Title: Re: Grandmstramrod mk3 1.4 budget! comments
Post by: shepgti on 22 December 2010, 01:27
just waste as little money as possible on it. whack some coilovers on it (keep the old shocks so you can put them back on when you get rid) dont bother with a vento front as ventos are sh!t and a vento front mk3 is even sh!tter (my opinon, scene queens will hate..)

go for a matt camo green!

out of intrest what brewery/pub are you manager of at 19..?

Title: exaust today
Post by: GrandMstRamRod on 13 January 2011, 17:14

first this to do is jack up the beast
(http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/5390/img20110113145020.jpg)

bit of bodging as the current exaust is 45mm and back box is 60mm used  1 reducer and a flexi pipe
(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8776/img20110113145048.jpg)

first try and make a custom hanger for the box, this was my first attempt ended up cutting the origional back box and got my brother to weld it to the stainless steel one
(http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/1625/img20110113150302.jpg)

finished product will get better picture tomorrow
(http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4272/img20110113164126.jpg)
only one small problem is that the welding and sorting with the pipe is a bit well messy so needs tidying up

only works when ignition is off its not wired to the 12v positive from cigy, its connect to the one next which is negative! and 12v from ignition live

Nowt different to some of the cities I've lived in though.  Try Longsight in Manchester, lost count how many times i'd had a knife put to me!

Leeds has an excellent night life! I was gutted when my mate moved back home.

major problems

1. before anyone says think Ive been a idiot

2. there is a squeaking as if rubber is rubbing from back coilovers is this normal?

3. dont think i tightened the front ones up properly even after following a guide as they move in the struts! NOT GOOD need, there is bush taking off old suspension which which i think should of been tightened all way to bottom of thread approx 15cm on coilovers then under strut hole bush then top bush as currently i can actually move the whole suspension by pushing it and steering is really light!

damm got MOT due monday aswell! this is gonna have to be a quick fix!

just waste as little money as possible on it. whack some coilovers on it (keep the old shocks so you can put them back on when you get rid) dont bother with a vento front as ventos are sh!t and a vento front mk3 is even sh!tter (my opinon, scene queens will hate..)

go for a matt camo green!

out of intrest what brewery/pub are you manager of at 19..?

okells, its a isle of man company that have 42 pubs on the island and 5 in the mainland!

Drink it regularly! Prefer the other local brew Bushys mind

we have diffrent rules than the isle of man, we are only have to have 2 products on all the time okells and carlsberg (not my choice) as carlsberg deliver our okells, so anything else is what we wish to order in.

nope never been but might have to do some relief work this summer over there!

atm i just put centers back on and sprayed them same colour as the car! ermmm 77 i think i will find out just on way to work at the mo!

yh low profile next! get it tucked under them arches the referb! polish the bad boiiss!

only one problem is that back lip hits tyer with to much weight in back or going fast over bumps which has ripped rubber of back right! any ideas apart from raising the suspension as ive already done that but want it lower!

obviously 195 would be better but is there any other rubber size that would suit these tyers???

Good choice of wheel, be great when you sort the arches out.  you could always get BBS caps to stick on as lemski says or an even cheaper option is to just get small BBS stickers, have seen diddy ones on ebay before.

I was asked for ID buying a kitchen knife the other day, first time I've been asked in 5 years.

I went clean shaven because I had a job interview and I looked 12. Won't be doing that again.
