As some of you may have seen in another thread my dad has just bought a very low mileage mk2, theres a couple of things that he's asked me to sort on it though.
Firstly headlights are sh!te so i'm making an uprated wiring loom for them.
Secondly the rear screen heater works but takes about half an hour to just demist the window, is there any way of improving this?
Finally, it looks to me as if it is missing some trim from the doors, can anyone confirm this?
Here's a pic of the car, you can just about make out a little bit of trim infront of the rear wheel arch:

If you compare this to one of Chuff's old ones, the trim should continue along the doors?

I'm new to MK2's so please be patient with me!
Should the (pathetic) wheels have some kind of centre caps?
***Edit: Should just rename this 'Dom's problem thread!'
Got a couple more as well, firstly the factory fitted radio doesn't have an ISO connector on, instead it looks like this:

Does anyone know of a wiring harness that would allow this to be converted to ISO easily?
Secondly, having a poke around the engine bay I came across this:

Which looks to me like a homemade pipe, what is it for and should it look like that?
Cheers
-
Right then,
lets go thru ya issues.
Radio lead - cant help ya
Centre caps - maybe, but the black ones look fine
Pipe - its a feed to provide hot air up into the air filter box - it is just old - new BLACK ones can be had in meter lengths from GSF and the like
rear screen - fit a new one
headlight loom - search function
side trim, sure the base models came without, looks fine

Cheers Chuff :afro:
I've already found the info for the headlights, ordering parts as we speak
Does anyone know if autoglass will replace rear screens like they do front ones? If so a stone might have to find its way through it :lipsrsealed:
I'll get some more piping sorted and leave the other things for the moment then
-
i believe thy do do other glass.. i need a rear screen and a windscreen for mine..
-
why do you want to piss around with the wiring on the factory stereo?
-
Those are the centre caps on the wheels.. a little black thing over the hub cap and some black plastic caps over the wheel bolts
The bit of pipe sucking hot air from the exhaust into the air box helps stop the carb icing over when you're flat out

Because the radio doesn't work and i'm wacking a cd player in there instead, the only problem is the wiring in the car matches up with the factory radio whereas CD players have an ISO plug on the back. Therefore unless I chop the wires in the car and wire an ISO plug onto the end of them i'm going to need some kind of adaptor harness, and i'm not even sure that they exist :undecided:
-
they DID , but finding one these days will be fun

you got a nice genuine low millage standard mk2 and your already changing radio to modern jobby, considering changing wheels and slamming it (previous thread). stop messing with it and drive the thing. just my 2 pennies worth like
-
Thats a half tidy car you have there. Nice find. :afro:

Radio is being changed as old one doesn't work as i've already said. The wheels will stay for a while at least as they have brand new tyres on, and if they get changed it will be for something OEM. And it would never be 'slammed', it would look better with a subtle drop but at the end of the day it's my old mans car and he's 62 now, so realistically it will probably stay at standard ride height.

Cracking find :afro:.
Good luck with it.

For the rear screen, if all the elements seem to work, try cleaning the contacts where the wiring plugs into the element before consigning it to the bin.
It could also be that it's getting no power at all, and is clearing on it's own, so try changing the fuse. Last but not least, check the wiring between the tailgate and body for splits.

Damn that mint

check you are getting 12-13v on that rear screen with the engine running. test with the wires connected to the screen and with them disconnected to see if you have a volt drop under load. you might just have a dodgy earth etc, also check the resistance of the screen
Nice car

Cheers for the advice guys, i'll check the voltage to the screen as a starting point and take it from there!
Damn that mint
Cheers, yours ain't so bad itself
I'll get some better pics when the weather has improved a bit and I can get the garage door open

Just saw the other thread for this, all i can say is wow. What a clean mk2, awsome find! How much did this set you back if you don't mind me asking? OEM+ all the way, will sell for tripple the price in 3 - 4 years if kept in this good condition! BTW the early mk2 base models didn't come with the bump strips, personally think it looks better as it is! :)

Cheers buddy
Paid a tad over £1500, i've got no idea what it's worth tho tbh! It sounds quite high, but I've never seen one for sale in this kind of condition with this kind of mileage so I guess it's kinda hard to put a price on it? :undecided:
I've been having a bit of a better nose through the history and around the car, one year it only did 34 miles between MOT's!
The only thing that it appears to have ever had any problems with is the brakes, but I guess a lot of that could be attributed to it being used so little!
Also the car still has a good coating of waxoyl....
....from when it was new!
