i dont think so mate lol, these mk3 16v's are under estimated!
-
My mate has a 2ltr 16v canal boat, my mk2 16v, 4 up, and half a tank of fuel, is quicker than the boat 1 up
He probably wanted get past, before you turned your cannons on him

to be fair, mk3s are far safer in an accident than mk2s. I saw a really bad accident this morning involving two mk3s and there was hardly any damage...

-
That is a fair point, they are safer, but they don't half leak oil though!

hahahaha!!! knew id have fun opening a thread like this!!!!
-
The MK2 was doing you a favour. He must have taken pity on you and activated the "hide your shame" switch. The plume of smoke then enveloped your boat and thus helping you to hide your shame from other road users.
You should be thankful.
-
This is an epic thread, one man vs the rest of the forum!
As a fellow Mk3 owner though, i do have to agree..with the others!!
Although, if it was a Mk4 it may have been a different story. Or at least it was for me when a chavvy Mk4 owner tried to overtake me :lipsrsealed:
-
Thats right lets make it open to mk4's now
-
happy days, ive bought a kia pride, modded of course,im gonna use it for our club days as i`ll probably get more street cred using it,
(http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac320/jonnygsi66/kia.jpg)
ive also caught a pic of a mk2 at the pod with its sharp edges and stunningly good looks.

I was there when it was taken. The mk2 is racing a mk3. Unfortunately, the mk3 is out of shot because it was still lumbering from the start line.
-
I was there as well. The Mk2 was there so "the shamed" could put their Mk3's in it.
-
MK2 carrying a mk3, sounds about right, anyway, why would you waste your time modding a Kia when you can hide your MK3 like this:
-
haha, you dont need to hide your mk2`s , the knackered engine and plumes of smoke usually does that   , heres a pic of a mk2, people thought he was doing a burnout, it was actually being checked by vosa for emissions
-
you guys rock when it comes to pisstaking lmao   im sure this will go on for a while, me versus the forum, i dont see any other mk3 owners standing there ground for the mk3 so for that reason, "IM OUT" lol
-
I'm all for sticking up for the Mk3, but against the Mk2...You have no chance!!

You dont see the whole picture there Boyo. If you see the video, its actually the shockwave produced as the car hits the sound barrier. The boot is open as its acts as an air brake. :nerd:
P.S.
You won't see the other MK3 owners standing up for themselves, because just like the woman with two black eyes....
-
ive had about 4 mk2 gti`s and 2 mk3 vr6`s,and as much as i loved driving the mk2s,i have to say the vr6`s make the mk2s feel lame. :D
MOVE ON :D
-
So why does every Vr6 which gets broken allways ends in the bay of a MK2? :smug:
The MK3 did give us the VR6 that is all......
-

I wouldn't go that far. Granted it makes a nice noise, but it's far TOO HEAVY in a Mk2. Lots of grunt, but doesn't handle well. The majority of informed Mk2 owners wouln't have it.

Becuase a MK3 isn't worth saving, but hey engine is still good plus the ABF is cheap as dirt....... :lipsrsealed:

vr6 wasnt exclusive to the G3 - you got the rado and the B3 & 4 passats- but they get saved - go figure
-
im actually very soon gonna go buy a mk3 vr6, and then scrap my mk2 gti (what a nail!) lol:D
-
Apparently VW have just said that they are in talks to realise limited remakes of the mk3's but they have decided to iron out those not so good bits and make them better, This is the first press realise photo of the better looking mk3

basically i believe that mk2 owners are like kids on a playground playing follow the leader,  when i had my 3 mk2`s a few years ago the mk2 was sh!te, it was indeed the mk1 that ruled and in all honesty it deserved to be crowned with the "gti" badge, but now most mk1`s around are in storage or garages its the mk2 that suposedly holds the crown over all the other gti range, the mk3 was vw`s idea to make the gti safer, a bit more comfortable and trying to go with the changes of styling, it doesnt make it a sh!t car, i own mine cus its still immaculate, has its original sills (yes with no rust) and drives so much better than any of my mk2`s ever did, ive never been one to play follow the leader, if i thought the mk2 was soooo much better i`d have one but i dont . lol my new kia pride will show you all anyway!!

      well thats cool coming from the owner of a mk2   i remember the pools of smelly water in the foot well, and the sh!t poor heaters, cooling systems that blew the cap off the header tank, and smelling of oily smoke everytime i got to the pub or my parents house, the rattling inside that drove me bonkers, the rusty arches, wings, sills and floor pans, gearbox linkage worn so you choose where 1st or reverse is, i knew it would all come back to haunt me!!!!!
so thats why i have the mk3, maybe i might even get a mk4 next year too   cheers jimbo!!!!
-
I really think we need to look at the bigger picture, at the end of the day we are all here for one reason and have something in common, that is to be man enough to all have the GTi or VR6 badge. I suggest we stop pointing our guns at each other and lets hunt us some Ford owners   (mk2's still rule though )

im all for that buddy, but mk3 ftw!!!!!!!!!

Not everyone on here defending the MK2 is an owner, I have a mk1... it will be back with avengence not locked away in storage and hopefully will never be mocked. After all it is king!
anyone claiming mk2 engines are cr@p, think again, the engines kept getting carried over. the guts of a mk1 engine came from an Audi, the guts of a mk2 motor came from the mk1, the mk3 from mk2 etc...... then realising it wasn't enough stuffed the VR6 in which were later robbed by the mk2 owners because the engines out lived the car! Maybe old mk2s get a bit leaky but its not so much of a worry than in a mk3 because these were designed to float on the sea! sadly though the hull was quite prone to rust.
Gutted mk3 owner

I prefer the looks of the mk3 but im currently looking for a mk2 for a project needs to be mint underneath not to worried about body work 16v white or oak green ! is this possible to find such a car? i didnt know they still existed till my mate showed me his under a car cover stuffed into the corner of his garden
Think im gunna hold onto my mk3 for another 5 years as im sure it will become the next gti icon and then it will be the mk4 people slating mk5's etc etc
Tbh if i could afford a proper car i.e evo 8, M3 or similar i would consider keeping the mk3 aswell although the 2 ive had have been nothing but trouble and ive spent a little fortune on them  but i will continue to keep my current mk3 looking good going strong till i move on. The mk2 would be the first to go !

hope u can see my point now,lol
-
bloody hell i didnt realise how much smaller mk2s are! lol
-
I've had a Mk3 16v and a Mk2 16v. The Mk2 felt much quicker than the Mk3 and it had fewer problems than the Mk3, which is why I sold it to get the Mk2.
Even with the 150bhp 16v engine, the Mk3 is still heavy
Do you know if your GTI is still kicking out the full power?
Besides, you've no idea what the Mk2 that "smoked" you was running, could have been anything from a 16v to a G60 or 1.8T.
It's horses for courses though. If you like the Mk3, get one and enjoy it.
-
Some people dont understand the whole real gti thing, once the mk2's have gone then the mk3 or mk4 will never be the next real gti as they are too safe and boring, havnt actually driven a mk3 but have a mk4.

Only just seen this thread and its a good un!
Ive owned a mk2 and a mk3 8v and while the mk2 is more fun the mk3 is better for my current needs, it can provide some fun as well as being comfy. Perfick! Mk3 FTW!
I would love another mk2 though but as a second car or a weekend toy.

maybe thats rounded it up for us mk3 owners, to be honest im not really bothered who likes which model, what matters is that i like my own car for what it does for me, school run, autotests on a regular basis incl this weekend, family car, commuting, still doing around 1k miles per mth most the times and putting a smile on my face, oh and providing me with a dry seat!!!! lmao. everyone to there own, but im glad i opened this thread cus its been wicked fun!!! cheers lads!!! mk3 ftw!!!!!!
-
I've had a mk2 16v and currently have a mk3 16v. On a cold dark wet winter morning when I need to get to work I prefer the mk3 over the mk2 hands down. When it comes to a serious blast around the lanes on a summer evening the mk2 simply sh*ts on the mk3.
-
i have a mk1 16vg60 but its no good for a daily, ive just bought a mk3 16v and it will serve me well over the winter, then will be broken and the engine will be going in another mk1 as the mk3 is too slow, mk1 for B road action, mk2 for styling, mk3 for breaking
-
lol @ this thread.
mk2 ftw.
-
lol @ wayne, its gotta be done m8, but your numeracy`s wrong, its mk3 ftw

Mk1, was an amazing car for the day, just compare it with any other car of the mid 70s..
Mk2, was a Mk1 refined, and as pure a Golf as the Mk1..
Mk3, was not a Golf at all, it was a different car, that VW decided to put a Golf badge on, in a similar way the new water cooled Beetle, is not a real Beetle...
Just my opinion
Thom
-
thats rubbish mate, just cus its safety features make it a bit heavier its slated as a bad car, ive owned both, i cant see what your all going on about, the mk1 i agree with, i remember the day they rolled off the production line and the hype it caused in the automotive world, it deserves the place of the "gti crown" ten times over, jeremy clarkson even loves them, but not the mk2 lol but like i said each to there own, im just defending the fact the mk3 is a better everyday car than the mk2 .
-
the mk3 is not a bad car and is a more comfortable and safer daily driver than a mk2.
-
......... oh and providing me with a dry seat!!!!
The old car I've had with a leak was a Mk3 ! Came back from 4days away to find the footwell full of water.
Even my old Mk2 GL with sunroof didn't leak.
But as you say, each to their own. What brings us together on this forum is a love for VWs, Golfs in particular.
Each persons experience is different and down to whether the car they buy is decent or not. You could have a Mk4 less than 10yrs old and it have loads of problems. Equally you could have a Mk2 20yrs old with no problems.
These days, aged 30, I probably wouldn't want to run around in a Mk1 or Mk2, but would quite happily have them for weekend fun.
All those safety features that make the Mk3/4/5/6 heavier are the things I want to keep my family safe in the car.
-
rose tinted glasses.
that is all.
-
Well put Dubfan , at the end of the day the only car that deserves the crown of a real GTi is the mk1, this is where it all started and we are just following the shadow of it. It was made with one intension and that was to put a smile on peoples faces with good performance, weight, balance, looks and get you from A to B as quickly as possible and make you feel like a real racing driver. As time has gone by VW have made the GTi bigger and bulkier and yes this is for safty reason. Everybody for their own, no matter where we go or how fast we go at the end of the day we all bear the GTi badge and no matter what road you drive on all other car makes know they will never come close to it.
-
Lets be honest ... none of us would say "no" to a MK5, MK6 GTi ... their just getting better.
-
thats why i'm driveing a mk5 gttdi quite a lot.
the mk3 is quite a good car for its time but it's also really crap at being a golf GTI . tBH i wouldn't have anything against mk3 GTI's if they din't hav a GTI badge on them as really they are just anothere family wagon that drive like a trifel and there are meany cars out there like that.
MK2 FTW and yes the mk2 is more fun than the mk5 even tho the mk5 is faster and much more comfy on the long trips. the synco is defantly quicker on the twisty stuff if a 2wd mk2 would be is an intresting question

thats rubbish mate, just cus its safety features make it a bit heavier its slated as a bad car, ive owned both, i cant see what your all going on about, the mk1 i agree with, i remember the day they rolled off the production line and the hype it caused in the automotive world, it deserves the place of the "gti crown" ten times over, jeremy clarkson even loves them, but not the mk2 lol but like i said each to there own, im just defending the fact the mk3 is a better everyday car than the mk2 .
Thom has a point but so do you, the MK3 is a golf and VW had to make a lot of the changes they made to keep up with the competion but they failed when they bought it out as a GTI (especially the 8v). Like you say, it is a better everyday car and i agree, but thats not what the GTI was supposed to be about IMO,
-
IMO the Mk3 VR6 should have been the GTi
Lock Thread!!
-
I do a fancy a VR6 ... having owned a V6 in the past, the noise is second to none.
-
IMO the Mk3 VR6 should have been the GTi
VR6 was never aimed at the GTI market but the likes of Bmw 3 series and Merc C class, 8v should never have had the GTI badge but Sport or highline, 16v was ok being badged as a GTI but lets be honest mk3's standard are very poor in terms of handling.
-
These MK3 bashing threads always go the same way, always start as a comedy bashing followed by lots of love followed by a serious yet valid debate.
Then eventually all the mk3 owners........................

depends on whether you prefer driving a go-cart or a pram

Haha, well i'd defend it but i'm taking the moral high road!
Also deep down I think that most of us know that a mk2 is more fun and more deserving of the gti badge than a Mk3, but a mk3 suits my needs better. It was cheaper than a mk2 and i'm doing about 20k miles a year at the moment so comfort is important to me so the Mk3 wins for me for now

well guys, it seems youve really scared the mk3 boys off!!! lmao twas me who started this thread in defense of the mk3, needless to say ive sold it now    in the short time i had it and many miles i done in her it done me proud,i had much fun and the engine was faultless for me, its only fault was the fact its just not big enough for the kids to get in the back . will i be buying a mk2 toy next year? probably lol  cheers for tha awesome comments guys, best thread ive ever posted!!!!

lol, couldnt handle the pressure lmao! :)

the only thing i hate about my mk3 is the handling, but it is stock
other than that it is the most fault free car ive every owned....
-
You started a mk3 bashing thread........ and youve sold your mk3
was trying to convince myself i`d got the right model, lol like i said i had some good fun in the mk3, it done what it was supposed to do, it just wasnt for me, not enough grunt and all the power was at the top, i thought it would be like my old mk2 16v which had loads more midrange (and smoke lol) but it wasnt. :undecided:
-
So why does every Vr6 which gets broken allways ends in the bay of a MK2? :smug:
The MK3 did give us the VR6 that is all......
Not wishing to buy into this Pissing contest given that I have a SEAT presently (although 13MK2's and 2 MK3's also under the belt) and would just like you to note the MK3 was not the car the VR6 was designed for.
The VR6 was developed in 1986 and put into a MK2 Golf and a Scirocco in 1989, they were never released on sale as the engine required further development. By the time the engine was ready, the MK2 had been replaced. Hence the engine and lots of other components from the MK2 carried forward to the MK3. :nerd:

Hello Toddy!
Thats another +1 for the MK2
-
im drunk and i really shouldnt be on here in fact my missus has told me to leave it but mk 2's are brilliant but mk3's are newer and better although they messed the mk4 up lmao but every golf is pretty good but there not the best cars on the planet ! i just dont understand people who have spent 15k etc on them. Why not just go buy a proper car  its not as if we would all like a real nice car most people could afford one if we didnt spend so much money on our old golfs! tbh if i hadnt have bought mine i wouldnt understand the fascination but now i have i love it and i will not part with it even after i have bought my next car! It costs me next to nothing to keep it going so i shall keep it in tip top condition i believe i will only let it go if i become bankrupt or i die! btw im taking mine off the road next month till april it deserves a break im gunna run around in a diesel 4x4 till april :D thats the longest drunken sentance ive ever done lol night peps!
-
 I like the drunken rant! Makes sense too.
-
I'd rather have mk2 I've had both mk2 n 3 and my mk2 gti pisses over mk3 n mk4s. There a classic that need to be kept on the road as one of the last real gti's.

I think that people need to understand that VW changed the meaning of GTI in the early 90's due to a changing market. The mk3 is not a fast hatch (not the 8v gti anyway) but it wasnt meant to be. A mk2 would piss all over it in terms of speed and handling but probably not in terms of comfort and refinement (and maybe reliability, debatable)and this is what VW were aiming for. Also, Im sure I read somewhere that in the early 90's insurance premiums were ridiculously high and this is why lots of 90's hatches were a bit slow and didnt have much power?!

All very true.... Insurance all started going wrong in the late 80s I believe...
-
GTi = FUN :evil:
MK2 is Fun to drive and the MK3 is..... "comfortable"?
Ergo; The MK2 GTi is better than the MK3.
M'Lord.
-
They done it for the money and too keep up with the market, they could of carried on making proper gtis, but wouldnt be as big as they are today, dont see why they couldnt of just made a few fun cars, not like they wouldnt of sold.

Gotta be careful now though, it would appear that there's a mk3 entering the family/
It was true about premiums for hot hatches in the early 90s. Anything with a bit of poke was hammered, dad had a saphirre cosworth for just under a year. The third time it was nicked it never came back  Pricey indeed.

I'm sure the escort cossie days insurance got as crazy as 10s of thousands in some parts of the country!

  Is that a real mag? I wanna know what it says now!
-
yup, very real.
-
I guess thats 1 of my 3 reasons that the mk3 is a good GTI out of the window then
-
I remember buying that issue when I was a kid. I desperately wanted a VR6 in the family back then and this article absolutely slated not just the V but the Mk3 line up. Didn't stop me doing work experience in a VW workshop though
-

Two more for you on why the MK3 is Crap:
1. The Court of Public Opinion.
2. Diamond Hell.
You can't argue with them.
-
So mk2s are for people who don't care bout comfort then?
-
Trade comfort for fun, my back is a ripe age of 20 why do I need comfort !!
-
i cant afford a nice mk2 to tell you the truth,so i picked this up with fresh 12 months m.o.t 57k,full black heated leather, climatronic etc etc for £1000,i think mk3 vr6`s and the mk2 16v are in the same league, yet the vr6 is just more comfortable and has a better engine note ;)

When you get older and your metabolism slows the comfort will find you

Probably haha
How you work that out lol mk2 16v and vr6 mk3 in the same league ? No way
-
lol,ok have u got a mk2 16v?
-
yer lol so, obv im biased  maybe I have to try and mk3 vrs but im still doubtful. Its just fastish in a straight line no ?
-
I'm agreeing. Being 19 nearly 20 I would rather take the mk2 and my gti seats r compfy enough for my likeings. When I get old n midlife crissis hits I'll get a mk6 golf r. That's prob compfy and rapid. :D
-

well not just in a straight line, although you have to be crazy or brave to chuck a mk3 into a corner on standard suspension, but hey mate they really are great value for the money at the moment,go for a test drive in 1,(pretend your gonna buy) lol

My mate is off to look at a well tidy one tomorrow, hoping he'll stop being a skin-flint and go for a mk2 but this one is mint with negligable mileage on. Will have fun chasing him around Stafford though
-
nice 1 sparks hope its a good 1 and he buys it,only up the road from me aswell.
-
It doesn't matter really what golf it is there all fun to drive. I have fun with the same mk2s 3s and 4s all the time in and around grimsby. I'm bias to the mk2 but having a golf is a fun lifestyle in my eyes. Ne one agree???

-
Jimmyb. I know mine needs abit of a fix up. But do enjoy chasin the newer gtis about and chucking it through the twisty corners with them. If I didn't have golfs I don't know what I'd be drivin. Probs a corsa :(

Think that's where Stu is looking at the Golf tomorrow. He's pretty much up on his mechanics so he'll be fine. Currently helping him retore a 72 bay camper van. Cut the roof off it a couple of weeks back, never cringed so much in my life. He's confident the new roof will go on fine though.
If he buys it will be heading down Wolves way to pick it up.

Mind you that said, he didn't realise there was that much rot under the viking roof of the bl00dy van! Will pass on the knowledge, cheers matey
-
yeh,i bought some new wings for my mk2 before from midland lamps and panel, they wasnt original but still fitted well, they was only £18 each!
-
I've never heard of them but can't argue that I got quated 50 for non vw wings and 100 for genuine. And being a student not got that sort of money to just chuck about. Does that place do bumper of do you know where to get bumpers cheap from (not ebay though)
-
me and the missus was out yeserday driving through ripley towards derbyshire when a chap in a mk2 gti 16v overtook us, i`d have given chase but i couldnt see for smoke !!! lol they need to get these old knackers off the road tbh , theyre no good for the environment
