my mk2 will need a new handbrake cable(s) for the mot (not done yet) as its at full adjustment at the lever and it barely holds the car on a hill, do they come in pairs or are they sold seperatly as gef and ecp dont say
-
seperately (Got mine from GSF)
EDIT: full adjustment in the car, at the drums or both?
-
in the car, dnt think theres a way to adjust them at the drums

The adjusters on the lever ARE NOT to tighten the handbrake, its just to adjust the number of clicks.
Have a look on my project thread first post and click the link for handbrake tightening. You'll probably find the calipers just need winding in/out a couple of times to bring them back to life.
I'd grab the link for you, but i'm on my phone (mostly to wind up x4mgs)

ah, didn't see it was drums.
I've not wrote a guide for it, but usually drums have a little threaded rod inside them which acts as a ratchet (to allow for shoe wear). This can be wound in/out to adjust
When the handbrake is poor with drum brakes, it is usually just because the shoes are worn anyway.
-
ive changed the shoes and its no different and dont remember seeing any ratchet thing of any kind wen taking them off
the only adjuster inside the drum is the one circled which self adjusts

Those self adjusters rarely seem to self adjust immediately when they're put in again... Takes a bit of trial and error getting them moved manually.
This is a good read:

The auto adjusters are anything but. You just need a long ish rod with pointy end .. jack the rear end up and remove one wheel bolt and use a torch to spot the bottom of the wedge then lever it down until the wheel spins and you can just hear the shoes scraping slightly on the drums. Once done adjust handbrake cables in the car to three clicks, if this doesn't sort it then buy the cables. Did mine recently for the mot and had to replace one cable as it had stretched.
