Title: Need some advice
Post by: ex0rt on 24 September 2010, 18:52
Not sure which to choose as I am getting a VW Golf Mk6 as my first car and so far ive found two that im interested in ; Golf 1.4 TSI SE and the Golf 1.6 TDI Match
Both are brand new but one doesnt have the MFSW and the other doesnt have FOG lights and they are different colours too

Can any owners of these cars give me the pros/cons of each if possible, I know most of you own GTIs but im not at that stage yet  but any input would be nice

In my opinion, the MFSW is more important to have than front fog lights, unless you plan on using them as a night time decoration when your driving. If fogs are that important to you fit them later or get them in with the deal. In terms of colour and trim level, have good look round them, take the diesel and petrol variants out for a test drive, decide what one you like best and pick the colour that suits you. If your buying brand new, you're in the driving seat so to speak!

I think the Golf Match has the MFSW but no fog lamps. My nephew has just ordered one in Shadow Blue and added some Fog Lamps. Brilliant value for money.

However, I am a very disgruntled GTi owner as VW Customer Service is really quite disgusting.

I can live without the Fogs i guess and the colour choices are blue graphite and deep black pearl

Go for the Match if it has the MFSW (I think?). Hartside's advice is perfect. My preferred colour of these two is Blue Graphite. MFSW very important.

Match comes with a higher spec and also the RCD 510 so im more heading that way but for some reason I feel as though in the long term though the diesel may save me money the performance from the engine is going to be a let down

Can I ask why not GTI? Reason is I dont think your going to be satisfied with ether of those? When your driving along the road and you see a GTI, your going think if only?

But out of the 2 , I would go for the  TSI engine it will have more fizz than the diesel, more economical too being a 1.4 ??

I agree with Steve that the 1.4 TSi engine is the better of the two.
Can you not source a Match with the 1.4 TSi petrol engine?
Another option with this engine is the 7 Speed Auto DSG.

My nephew has orederd a Shadow Blue 1.4 TSi Match with a 6 Speed Manual Gearbox + Fogs (which can be retro-fitted).

The match has the following more than an old spec se

Multifunction wheel
Bluetooth connection
Parking sensors front and rear
RCD 510
DAB radio

Match all the way of course going to cost more than an se 1.4 tsi, not a very desirable engine in comparison to the 1.6 tdi so it ought to be a few grand cheaper.

If fogs are important you could maybe retro fit them?!? Another forum suggests the wiring is already there.

Golf Match 1.4 TSI 6 speed manual £17,965 - non-metallic paint
Golf Match 1.6 TDI 5 speed manual £18,750 - non-metallic paint

Price difference just £785, the TSI being the cheaper one and IMO the nicer drive.

Tough choice gotta weigh up the increase in mpg which in the real world will be 15mpg, road tax saving of £100 a year just a guess, higher resell back for the diesel. 1.4tsi does drive better as 17ps more but diesel is fine IMO

Deep black pearl, absolutely stunning especially when clean and catching the sun.  Mind you I'm slightly biased as mine is deep black pearl,  whatever you go for and personally I'd get the Match enjoy.

If i had not bought the GTI i would still be running deisels because of the torque, because of equipment differences it would be the match for me. A mate of mine at work runs the older engined mk6 2.0 TDI 110PS SE (the engine the 1.6TDI replaced) and its a nice car.

I havent driven ether of them, but would need to test them out, also its ok havin the extra's but if the car under performs the extra's are meaningless IMO

Well, if it's a first car maybe a Polo would be a bit better size and definately cheaper. But that I guess comes down to how old you are and who's coughing up for the car.
Again, whether Diesel or petrol comes down to driving style.
I'd go for the Diesel. But in a Polo or Ibiza SC.

Must admit the young lad at work who bought the TDI110SE i did ask why? Mainly because he went from a MINI cooper S works (200bhp) down to a non sporty setup TDI (110bhp). For the same money he paid for the year old golf he could have had a brand new SEAT ibiza FR TDI 140bhp which would have been my choice at his age and relationship status.

He may think he wants a Golf, but he may not actually want a Golf
How far does the average person look into buying a car? People buy VWs because of the badge and a Golf is the most recognisable VW. Those two small engines are crap in Golfs, Polos and Ibizas are much lighter.

I've been looking at FR 140s myself. In fact I put up a thread about it on Cupranet not long ago
