mmmmm i'd go for that too, not worth getting yourself in money troubles just to get a car, no matter how much you want one! look on here for a guy called fielder, he'll tell you what he did............

you can build up no claims as long as you use that insurance company for your first year on your own policy, dunno if that was a specific rule for that company, or a general one tho

keep your eyes peeled, he'd got a driver too as he's young (and foolish ) and you can see what he's done to his car. or if you go to the users galleries you can see all the marvelous things he's done!!!! or in the project section actually.....

That's the route i took, had my first fast(ish) car when I was 20 that way. The premium i paid on that is about the same i pay for the cover on the 2 cars i have now.. it all depends just how patient you are.

I had a policy with CIS under my mums name and it was an any driver policy where anyone with a clean liscense under the policyholders permission could drive the car.  Its not worth shelling out sh1t loads on insurance for a car thats worth much.

My first policy under my own name is my mk3 GTI 8v now and admittedly it was ?900 the first year but I was only 21 when I took it out, and I had an accident previously that was my fault. Its gone down this year to about ?650 (?745 for the priveledge of paying monthly)! Thoroughly recommend elephant.co.uk.  They are handling my next claim very well! (not my fault this time though!)

try and get your first year on yer folks policy, that way you wont have to have a slower than necessary car (i know a 1.6 driver is slow, but not for your 1st car!!), then get your own tpft year after that. its do-able  (my smallest engine has been a 1.6 )

i have a 1.6 driver its ?580

this is because i took out a new polocy with my dad as main driver, this will not affect your dad whatsoever as even though my dad has over 9 years no claims i took out a new polocy as if he had 0 years no claims,

I have had one accident and that goes on my record not his, so it can be done

YOU CAN HAVE A GTI!!! (I think!)

I managed to get insured for ?800 on a mk2 8V when I was 18...

Was with Brentacre...Speak to Kerry...It was 4/5 years ago tho so preium may have gone up?

I just picked up the car in my sig for ?400... It came with a couple of bits in the boot which Ive sold for ?100+ on ebay... So less than ?300 and all that needs doing really is the clutch... insured for ?650 (with Brentacre, now 23)

Im sure with an extra couple of months saving you could manage it...and believe me EVERY single time I drove that car I loved it...

But if you were being sensible you'd get a 1.6 driver for around ?300 with a years T&T... insurance for around ?6-750 build up the no claims and get a GTI in a couple of years that isnt going to die in a year or two...

I would never ever  not have had my golf (if that makes sense...)I figured Total cost of Insurance+car=?1500 for the year, the chance of the car lasting the year was pretty slim, so I may aswell get the most fun/nicest/easiest to fix, source parts for/friendliest community and safest(as I found out) that I could for the money...

If you love driving...get a cheap GTI ( but do wait for the right one!!!) If your not so fussed and just want a nice car get a driver with gti trimmings and save the insurance!

Just my 3 penneth!

Thanks for all the advice.
Ive been thinking and am guna save up a little longer till iv got about 2 grand to spend that on the car and insurance, don't want to bankrupt my self totally just to have a car. Iv been on a couple of websites and heard about a pass plus scheme? said to reduce your insurance premium? Has anyone else done this or heard in some way about it?

Chers Adam.

pass plus seems like a load of bull.

Most insurance companies dont even ask for the pass plus certificate and you can just blag that you have one

First ring them up with quotes with and then without the certificate.

elephant.co.uk dirt cheap

Luckily until recently i was on my old mands trade policy but after movin away ive had to insure a car myself , try doing it like i did and find a classic car insurers that will do 17yos itll be a hard find , join club gti , loads of insurers (specialist ones) will offer you a discount if they think your not just some numpty that wants the fastest car possible at 17 , if you show a genuine love of the marque then lots see it as a bonus , also try Adrian flux , really cheap for younger drivers , thats who my little bruv is insured with hes just turned 18 and blasts about in a h reg XR2i (im trying to convert him just give me time) and pays somewhere like ?1200 a year fully comp . Hope this all helps , but no matter what you get your first car will ALLWAYS be your best , no matter how fast good bad or unreliable , your first car should b savoured n n loved

then you claim, they ask to see the certificate, you dont have it, and you suddenly realise you have to spend the next year as a prostitute, to afford the damage you have caused as they tell you you signed to say the info you gave was true to your knowlege. they never ask to see your licence either when you call for insurance but they will want to see it if you claim.

If you insure your own car in your mum or dad's name it could get awkward in the event of a claim. If you are the main driver they will not be amused if they find out.

Insurance companies are not completely dumb and if your mum/dad already have their own car(s) insured in their own name and you are the purchaser and registered keeper of the new car that you have also insured in their name - they are likely to smell a rat. Somewhere in the small print will lurk the sub-clause that gets them out of paying up if you have a bump.

If you get offered a good deal in your own name, start reading the policy from back to front - nasty stuff in contracts is never on the first couple of pages. Offering to pay the highest excess possible can get your quote down a bit - better that ?200 or so is sitting in your bank (and hopefully staying there) than part of your insurance payment and never being seen again.

If you are gong to save up for a bit, why not ring some companies and see if they will offer you a discount for pass plus and if so, how much. That way you can work out if it is worth doing or not.

This seems to make the most sense, speaking to other people as well as your idea , I'm thinkin take the pass plus then get something like a 1 litre polo insured in my name and offer to pay the highest excess possible, do this for a couple of years then get the GTI. Better to be patient than have an empty pocket due to insurance. Better to be legit and above board.

You could fork out a lump sum but just say the car is involved in a bump within weeks of taking out the policy?

monthly insurance payments could be the cheaper option.

What you peeps think? Could it work?

Dont see the logic there ? Even if you pay monthly, you aren't going to stop paying after you have an accident surely. Also if you pay a lump sum and cancel the policy you get the remainder of the term refunded. Paying in one go is cheaper in all cases, since you don't get charged the extra as with a monthly payment scheme.

I actually meant the extra bit of excess sitting in your bank account - the point being if you don't make a claim, it doesn't get spent. Some companies reduce your quote if you offer a big excess, some don't.

Monthly insurance is useful if you are short of cash but some policies require you to pay up the remainder immediately if you claim. ALWAYS read the small print.
