personally i think the benefits of a upgraded smic will be minimal, as the amount of air getting to the intercooler will be the same as a stock SMIC, however with a forge or THS FMIC, the amount of air getting to the intercooler is greater and therefore helps make a big difference in cooling the intake temperature.

that all depends really on the length and diameter of the pipework as with the forge and ths ones these use std oem size diameter pipework and are fitted the same side and set up as if the oem smic was installed tbh from what i have heard/been told this is the best set up fmic wise on the mk4 its the e-bay fitted ones that you may find you have a small degree of lag

turbo lag can be caused by length of pipework the air has to travel through, over sized intercooler and also the amount out bends etc in the pipework.

Intercooler pipework is best when you minimise the amount of bends needed to get the air from the turbo to throttle body. As stated by Matt the forge and THS kits have minimal bends and use same diameter pipework as the silicone boost hoses you get from forge. The intercooler itself is not massive compared to these big ebay ones you see on skylines etc
