Title: Brakes
Post by: gizzywizzy on 03 September 2010, 23:43
This evening whilst heading home a bloody great big fat badger waddled out in front of me, now being an  animal lover I couldn't bear the thought of running poor old Brock down so I slammed on the brakes.  What rubbish, instead of stopping the car immediately they had a few seconds of travel in them which could have meant the end of Brock if I had not swerved slightly out of his way.

Anyone else have this with their brakes and if so is it a serviceable thing as the car was only in at the beginning of August for it's 1 year service and they never mentioned the brakes.

i would never expect to come to an immediate stop with any car really..how fast were you going?

also i think the brake pads get changed on the 3rd year of service

It was probably the anti lock feature, was there a shuddering through the brake pedal when you braked?

It is an annoying feature, but nothing to worry about

Yes that was exactly what happened.  Thanks I can live with that.

No more than 40 at that time.

All mk6s I've driven have the most overservoed brakes I've ever come accross. I've just got to breathe on my brakes and my airbags nearly deploy. I always had doubts about the brakes on my mk5 though, which is more or less the same system as the mk6.
Could be one of a few things Gizzy but before you go visit your dealer maybe try using your brakes quite hard a few times as the pads may have glazed if you've only been driving the car very gently and taking it easy on the brakes for a while.

[random comment mode]Took my car in for a service on Saturday and they had a black mk6 GTI waiting for collection. Looked gorgeous in the flesh and the first black one I've seen. Lo and behold I saw another whilst driving back home again, black really does look perfect with the Monza Shadows[/random comment mode]

Thanks, yeah I've been giving them a few goes over the last few days and there really is quite a lot of travel in them. My previous car had amazing brakes, they stopped the car immediately with no judder.  Will keep at them for a bit longer and if no improvemen I will go visit the dealer.

Yeah I love my car in the black and the monzas do look really good against the dark paintwork, so thanks for that.

Gizzy

The 312mm brakes are fine for standard GTIs but once remapped I think they suffer which is no suprise. A set of second hand Golf R and R32 brakes (Audi S3, TTS etc use these too?) would be a nice cheapish upgrade

Ever thought of uprating the pads and disc's rather than forking out for golf R/R32 brakes? Decided to do that on my vr6 and seems to have been a good decision. But then again my car is a mk3 so not sure my opinion counts here

std gti brakes are a little poor tbh. go with s3 or r32 brakes as said above :nerd:

Thought as much

I dont see the point on spending alot of money on new calipers etc when you could spend alot less on better discs and pads, you'll be surprised at the difference itll make. OE pads and discs are ok but fade far to quick for my liking.

The R32 / S3 brakes are an improvement but weigh a ton (which is unsprung) so IMHO aren't the best route.

Pads and discs on the original callipers are an improvement but again can quickly reach there limits too.

Both of the above comes from personal experience of trying both routes on my Mk5 before settling on  the Porsche 4 Pot Brembo i now have on my Mk6

Calipers (from ebay) £175 - £250
Fitting Kit and Pads - £250- £300

Plus the cost of the refurb which can be as cheap or as expensive as you like

Yes that was exactly what happened.  Thanks I can live with that.

The braking distance should be the same for cars with or without ABS. Although it may not feel like it as because of the juddering..

If it were not for the ABS feature, you would not have been able to save that poor little badger... The 'juddering' is the brakes going on and off really quickly so that your brakes do not lock (hence "Anti-lock Braking System") your wheels and prevent you from maneuvering the car while braking hard.
