When I bought my mk6 GTI the wife said, "It looks just the same as your last car" (which was a MK5 GT TDI) then proceeded to point to another car.
"Now there's a car that looks sporty and different inside." To be fair it felt a very different seating position. She was pointing to the Scirocco 2.0 TSI.
Although I don't regret my purchase I do wish I had driven one.
Has anyone driven a Scirocco? How do they compare with Golfs when driven?
-
I took one out for a test drive but that was it.
OK I suppose but the interior etc. of the Golf is streets away; the Roc looks dated by comparison.

Drove one before deciding on the GTi. Needed 5 doors. Did not like the dashboard as it is from an Eos.
'rocco 'A' pillars were so thick, I nearly had an accident!
-
i drove one. didnt like it at all!
hated the rear view mirror adjusters position. poor visibility. dated dash that looks worse than the mk5. cramped rear cabin. not so great driving position.
-
Great to drive, but the interior is really boring and they all look the same (TDI, TSI...). Also, you only get two doors, which is no good for me. If I had to get a Scirocco, it would be the R, otherwise the GTI wins hands down, IMHO.

What he says^ couldnt see out of the back to cramped nice to drive though!!

Nice cars and they get great reviews. However I just don't like the car from the back. It looks to wide and squashed down from the rear for liking. The car has a J.Lo bottom and I prefer Kyle
-
When I first saw it I was gobsmacked. Thought it was lovely. Now I just think it has dated so much and I'm glad I never pursued my interest in them.

+1 with Froggy
+1 with p3asa
Nice face, shame about the arse!
-
^ spot on. Looks gross from the rear and pretty sexy from the front. I do also like the panoramic roof you can spec on them. Hopefully the next model will have an arse-lift!!
-
I drove an R, its the rear end saddle bags that i don't like. Also the rear vision through the letter box rear window. I had no complaints about the interior myself.
-
I think you are being a bit harsh
My wife has 2.0 TSI, comes with standard ACC, better cd than golf, and in sport mode sticks to corners.
I still think it looks great, but hate travelling in the back
I have ed 30, just ordered Mk 6 candy white 5 doors 18'' monzas, sun roof winter pack
promised oct/nov..................
remember the wait for the roc.
-
I think you are being a bit harsh
Why?
Its very much a subjective thing and for me it is now very dated and doesn't appeal.
Welcome to the forum by the way

hey
ive got a new scirocco and the interior is nigh on identical to the gti. i sat in a golf r and thought the position was a bit high for me-im 6ft4-but i love the lower driving position of the roc. rear visibility was a bit of an arse at first but the side mirrors are so good i dont find it a prob now. shes got a big bum fair enough but for my money the mk 6 gti isnt a patch to look at as the mk5 gti.
-
I drove the Scirocco R before I bought the Golf - I thought it was a marginally better drive but have to agree about the interior finish being a bit behind the Mk6 Golf - not surprising as it's from the Mk5 era.
As for looks, I'd take a voluptuous rear over a skinny arse any day

forgot to mention the gorgeous 19'' laganas

my sister have rocco, the lower driving position of the roc is perfect, rocco is the state of art, gti is conservative, gti mk 6 is the best car when we talk about everyday using, rocco is best coupe for the money in that price range, gti is better finished than rocco inside, i was pick gti, but my opinion is that both cars are great, question is what you want - conservative good car for something more than drive around or pure joy in ride, in rocco you will have a feeling - what a feeling, gti - choice with a more sense
gti - worsprung durch technik
rocco - car with soul

but in actual fact ALL THREE ARE THE SAME f**kING CAR

You been on the sauce?
The Scirocco has quite a different chassis and driving position to a Golf.

Scirroco TSI also has the old 2litre engine from the MarkV

The first reply (exonian) is more less true,
The second reply (Spartacus) is not. It has the newer TSI engine the same as the mk6 golf GTI and has always done just at first in a different tune.

This is true...a shared platform, but different chassis.
They are not the same thing.

Well I think I am the only one on here who has owned both so i'll give you my opinion. I had a Scirocco 2.0TSI for a year and 10,000 miles before the Mk 6 GTI that has now covered 20,000.
Scirocco: Looks cool and funky, for a while, then it really loses the appeal.
GTI: Looks classically sporty and I still love the look.
Everyday use:
Scirocco low slung slabby doors make getting in and out and tight car park spaces difficult, rear view I really didn't have a problem with and my two kids loved the back of the Scirocco but felt a little claustrophobic on longer journeys.
5dr Golf obviously wins here!
Quality and spec: Scirocco not made in Germany but still good quality, not as good as Golf and missing the little luxuries/necessities such as bonnet strut, interior of Scirocco is a bit drab and leather quality mediocre but I have cloth on the golf so cannot compare.
Drive: Now this is where it all counts surely?? Well when I first drove the GTI I was underwhelmed in comparison to the well run in Scirocco but after a while I began to realise the subtle differences and I now think the Golf a better car to drive. The Scirocco suffered from massive torque steer when on the gas and overtaking for example and understeered hugely even in it's standard output. My Golf is Revo'd and delivers the power in a much more precise and controlled manner. The Golf is a better drive, end of in my book.
Looks: Some people love the look of the Roc but any car that needs lowering before you even get it out of the showroom should hang its head in shame in my view.

SENSIBLE POST ALERT !
Good post Gossa, a balanced if not slightly biased review from someone who's actually owned both cars. It all makes sense to me. Rocco's are a no no for me, purely cause of the getting the little man in and out ( and I mean the baby by the way in the sig. )

The 'Roc has an extremely ugly arse, unnecessarily thick 'A' pillars, has only 2 doors, is too low, the doors are too long, the boot is tiny, the view out of the rear window is awful, has a dated dash, is very cramped in the back and I don't like it.
That's why a bought a 5 door Golf GTi.

I'm of a similar opinion...
I need something I can throw spare wheels, rear beams, TVs, bikes etc in...so a 5 door makes it easier.
The 'rocco isn't a pretty car in my book (very subjective, I know) and not as easy to live with as a GTI..so I'd rather pay more and have a GTI.
I also find the 'rocco very colour sensitive.
White looks good...and, er, after that...Hmm...
-
I like the Rocco R in the 'R' blue
I bought my GTI without even looking at the Rocco because I was drawn by the pedigree of the GTI badge. I have however had a few chances to look at the Rocco's now.
1. The boot is tiny and funny shaped compared to the GTI.
2. I use my 5 seats quite regularly.
3. I was disappointed that the Rocco didn't have the updated dash from the mk6.
4. Things like the mirror adjust are in hard to reach places behind the triangular door handles - think its a bit of design before practicality.
5. Looks great from the front but poor from the back.
6. No individuality between models.
Apart from that I think the Rocco is a great car. My friend is looking at buying one and I would him encourage him to get it. He likes the build quality of my GTI, the DSG and the engine - but he wants something that looks just a little sharper. Is that not what VW built the Rocco for?
I just prefer the GTI because it's more my cup of tea.
-
I like the look of the Scirocco, but there is something about it I really don't like.
The big bum doesn't offend me too much - its the square shaped front wheel arches!
No matter how low it is, it still doesn't look right because of the shape of the wheel arches. The Roc R has 'Sports suspension' - but you could still accidently import an immigrant who was hiding in those arches!!
I was almost sold on a Roc R until the Golf R was announced. The missing middle rear seat, awkward shaped boot, and limited rear headroom put me off a bit. Plus the 4wd on the Golf made it an easy decision.
The Roc R has the same interior as a MK6 Golf - and no doubt they'll start putting that into all the Rocs soon?
-
Oh, one more thing ..... it is a pain in the arse to park that ugly arse with ease!
-
Bought a brand new 2.0 TSI Roc back in January 2009 and kept it 7 weeks. Knew within a couple of days I'd make a mistake and I sold it and bought a late ED30 - a far better car IMHO. The Roc's seating position was too high, visablity was poor etc. etc. I'd choose a MK6 GTI over a Roc anyday of the week.

Hey all
Thanks for your measured opinions on the GTI vs Scirocco.
The wife has just pointed out that we are all likely to be biased as this is a GTI forum!! ha ha ha

Absolutely, ask this on the scirocco forum and see what happens!
