Title: Ruby black mk2 vr6, the week long conversion challenge begins!
Post by: Benrevs on 01 September 2010, 18:24
After 7 months of just working I finally got round to purchasing another mk2, being disqualified for a year meant I could wait for the right car to come my way.  A 90 spec 3 door in black found its way into the workshop this afternoon and already the cogs are turning. You all know my previous orange mk2 vr6 which Chris on the forum bought from me earlier this year.  After building/owning it I cant keep this one standard either   Anyway, i will be on the road again in December so until then I will be sorting the paint out, not sure what colour to go for yet! I am sh!te at making decisions like that so I may narrow it down to a few then maybe put a poll on here
I have one picture so far!  More to come!

Cheers guys!  I am thinking something more subtle, was using some copper grease yesterday and it got me thinking!!
I think they are Wolfrace or OZ, not 100% though.  I have managed to rope the missus into sticking the headlining back on saturday, I made it sound like a fun girly thing to do!!

I managed to dragged myself down the workshop today to get a few bits done.  The headlining had fallen down at the back so I got it out, cleaned all the foam rubbish off of it and stuck it back on. It will do for now but will recover it eventually.   I then convinced the missus to mask up the grill for a fresh red stripe.... It kept her occupied for HOURS. She is pedantic so did a good job... apart from the bits she missed

Also had a crack at the faded rear bumper as it was almost white, much improved I reckon!

Have really got the bug again now   I even got up 2 hours early to get a few bits done on the car.  I set about sorting the few patches of rust.. or so i thought.

Under the window had rusted through the panel so it had to be cut out.

Cleaned back and rust treated before a coat of etch primer, i will go round skim all the offending areas with filler at a later date.

Title: Re: Ear we go again!
Post by: Benrevs on 29 September 2010, 21:41
Right then! Fairly big update now as, I have had time to work on it after finishing the last big job for a while.(pics included)  Turns out I have less than two weeks to finish the car, so I will be fully at it from now on and am expecting to be painting it mid next week. :lipsrsealed:  I have found more rusty bits as I have been taking trim off etc, seems like 1 forward and 2 back

I have finished patching up the arches at the rear and skimmed some of the bits I treated earlier on in the thread.

I then got hold of another mk2 which was 1.3 with loads of GTI bits on it, including g60 arches  a stainless exhaust, omp steering wheel, audiosport door pods and some handy panel sections!!  I picked it up as a non-runner for 150 squid, I sold the Jetta front end off of it and a few other bits and made my money back straight away... which was nice!

After some deliberation i decided that the bootlid from the breaker was in better nick than mine, so i set about repairing it and flushing the wiper and washer jet holes.

Removed the roof strips and found this on the offside:

I trial fitted the exhaust I nabbed off the other golf, being a 1.3 it needed some convincing and still nedds shortening a few inches,  but looks ok:

Title: Paint day is coming!!!
Post by: Benrevs on 29 September 2010, 21:53
My mate came up saturday and helped with a few things. We got the sunroof out and the majority of the car flatted and keyed:

I ordered a repair panel for the filler area, but they screwed up and hit me with an 8 week delivery time so... I cancelled and cut the offending section from the other mk2 then set about butchering mine:

ref the welding, did you leave it as lots of tacks or did you seam weld the whole thing before smoothing? :undecided:

The picks were taken whilst doing it.  Gotta do a tiny bit at a time or you will put too much heat through and warp the panel, especially a big one... similar story with the grinding.

Cracking progress :afro:
Title: Re: Ear we go again!
Post by: Benrevs on 30 September 2010, 20:08
I got a bit done today but not as much as I would have liked.
I had to cultivate another piece from my donor for the rot by the door.  As it had no sunroof it was missing the hole for the drainage tube, but easily sorted with the drill.

Whilst filler was drying had a hack at the front bumper. Guy who bought it decided it would be too much of a good idea to prep it.. paint on plastic= flakage!  So I painstakingly scratched it off with a blade, not finished but hey!

I also cut the new front wing ready for the g60 arches. The rears got the same treatment.  Whatever happens there will be paint on something by mid next week!  I have been eyeing up some wheels and think its gotta be Borbet A's or similar... just need money now!

Title: Re: Ear we go again!
Post by: Benrevs on 07 October 2010, 22:53
Not that bad to be honest, it hadn't spread to the joining panels too much.

I have been at it for the last week... well only four days actually working on it
The shell, bonnet, a door and the boot are ready for paint, just need cleaning off and hanging etc. I also completely forgot about blanking off the ariel hole in the wing   so I welded that up this morning, just need to rub down the primer tomorrow.  I want to start putting it back together already, this bit takes forever!!
A few pics for you:

Anyways, it is now painted and looks awesome   But the pics have been fiddled with so colour is still a mystery...  :lipsrsealed:

This is better than Eastenders!!
I have painted the last few bits now and had a day and a half of flatting back and compounding.
Even managed to get the front bumper and an arch on the car.  I cant be arsed to change the colour on all the photo's anymore so the following ones are correct   I played a trick on you and the ones posted before were of the car when it was pre painted to show up any imperfections.
These are the pictures that had me sold on the paint:

I wanted something subtle but interesting, and being close to the original colour made the job easier.

Its called Ruby Black or Rubinswartz. The car looks black in dim light, but once something bright hits it, it flares up deep purpley red... ummmm!

Would help you out guys, but sadly this car was a last chance opportunity as the workshop is closing down   The guy I worked with is leaving and I cant afford to buy all the kit. Thats mainly why I have had to hurry this project along as everything will be getting cleared out/sold.  On the job hunt for me   But I do have a rolling CV

I wasn't at the workshop today as I am going up later with a mate. Note how he only lends a hand when the hard work is out the way and we start fitting up

Anyway I thought I would at least do something to contribute to the car so I got the saws out...
I am by no means a carpenter by the way! I have these for the front which came on the car I broke
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh272/benrevs/MK2%20VR6/15102010423.jpg)

So I needed something for the back, I have some really nice Pioneer 17cm speakers which came with the car.
I am a cheapskate and didn't want to buy any wood so I utilised this old whiteboard which had been knocking about

Male + pen + white surface =cock. Oh how it made me giggle
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh272/benrevs/MK2%20VR6/15102010417.jpg)

I then puy some candyfloss inside,it didn't taste great
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh272/benrevs/MK2%20VR6/15102010420.jpg)

I have all the bits cut for the other one, just needs assembly. Eventually they will be mounted on mdf board on the shelf and carpeted.

Single wiper to fit tonight.

I have just got up (1:15pm)  after staying at the workshop untill 4 this morning!! My mate said he was up for a late one, but christ!  Fuelled by cider and other such things we got cracking. My aim for the night was to have the boot on, the doors, all the glass bar the windscreen and a few other odds and ends. We far exceeded that, and there isn't much left to go back on!
It seems that the more we put on the less black the car looks, contrast I guess.  I didnt take any during pictures as we were flat out and my phone was providing the tunes
I started by polishing and fitting the rear lenses to help line the boot up:

So here we are pretty much done, got the g60 arches to fit perfectly, the pass door however needs some tampering with.

It has been a while since my last post, to be honest I haven't done much exept go a little bit backwards

We had out wall insulation done last week, which I found out literally the minute I was leaving the house.  Only problem was my car is currently in the garage as I dont want it SCRATCHED.... see where i am going?!   i got home to find a cm of glass fibre dust on the car and scrathed down the wing where the guy had dragged his hose through.  Now I did say the keys are in it if he felt it was in the way.  He was lucky he was done and gone when I got home or i would of cut his balls off with a rusty ladel.  And realised today that the struts I put on the boot were too long and it has dented my roof near one of the brackets    I haven't even driven the car since I bought it and painted it, cheesed me right off.

Anyway the show must go on as they say.  I have nearly finished my wheel arch sub box, it just needs carpeting along with the parcel shelf.
I took a mould of the bit behind the arch and attached it to a bit of MDF. (I made that sound easy!)

Attached to car here along with a few well placed screws:

I am also going to put these through the wiring holes to make things a little neater:

Spot the dent:

I also cleaned the interior of all that damn bodyshop dust, and it looks spankin!:

Well basically, it been a sh!te few months!!  I was hoping to have the car on the road as soon as i got my license back, but lack of a job put those plans to rest.

Anyway, the car is now insured and will be getting tax in the morning.... I feel like a kid at christmas.

Since my last post I have mainly been tying up looses ends and sorting the stereo out.

I ditched the bodge speaker boxes as my mate had some knocking about he wanted to get rid of.

I drilled some 'oles in the connection plates to accept the jack plugs.

Just need to carpet the box and get some decent cables.

Then gave it a good old polish as it was covered in bits of tree and other novelties.

I have now been driving again for almost a month, but tbh have spent more time polishing the damn thing!  I fitted a brand new set of coilovers last week as the standard shocks were fubered and it was riding way too high.  Whilst underneath I have noticed it had been poly bushed by the last owner.. that's rear subframe, wishbones, anti-rollbar bushes etc. Bargain!
Anyway it drives like a dream, no bangs, rattles and bits falling off  Also did the timing on monday so she is buttery smooth.
Someone did however ding my new paintwork, knew it would happen but not this soon!!

Im going to take some pictures later, hopefully before it rains!!

Decided to do something with my wheels today as they are letting the car down.  They have been painted countless times by the previous owner so I wasn't going to strip them back as it would take forever.  So I went down to halfrauds and got some paint.

have done a few things to the car, but not much!  I finally fitted a bigger spoiler I had knocking around for ages.. I feel like a right badass.

Basically the wheels on the car are hanging and need blasting and eventually swapping for A's or schmidts.  I was at my gf's aunties bbq on saturday and I noticed a set of alloys tucked away under a bush in the garden.  Asked what they were from and they were off a renault 5 turbo....  4x100, just a bigger bore which will need spigot rings. Now these wheels are the kind you wouldn't put anywhere near a mk2 but I think they look pretty good!  Gunna put my Yoko's on and run them for a bit I reckon, dirt cheap too!

Hi mate

Did you have to bond the spoiler on with something - what did you use?

Hi!  It has bracket things that sit under the window rubber with mounting holes on, it is then bonded on the edges that come down the boot just for extra security. Can get pics if required, also think I may have two spare?  :undecided:

Righto, the reason i ask is because i am having a replacement tail gate sprayed up for my Vr (mk3) but doesnt have a spoiler. The problem i am trying to avoid is drilling through the glass of the replacement tail gate to attach it which is how they are fitted on mk3's.

If i can get something strong enough i quite fancy sticking rather than drilling.

Yea sticking is fine, use something that matches the colour of the car. Tigerseal works well amongst other things!

No problem.

I got the wheels fitted yesterday and my tyres put on.  My old ones had to come off at some point for refurbing, but I think once I get some spacers on these they look quite good. Still think I prefer the old ones though!  What do you lot think?

I am still using my phone camera, need a decent one which shows the colour properly!

I went to Volksfest at the weekend and the car was on a trade stand for Restomod bodyshop in Bristol.  It was filthy by the time I got there and drove through a field  Being useless I didn't get any pics.

For some reason after polishing cars all day I still clean mine when I get home :undecided:
I bought some new detailing wax at the weekend and had to give it a go!

always wanted to know were you get the front badge from with the red inside??
Title: Re: Ruby black mk2 resto, new spoiler and new wheels??!
Post by: Benrevs on 13 June 2011, 21:27
You have a mk3 badge so all you do is take the chrome bit off the front, paint the behind bit and the front if desired, and the glue it back together!

Nope, liquid gold furniture renovator and preserver. The main plus is that by upturning the bottle onto a sponge very quickly go me round the whole front bumper and one arch   but it didn't last more than two days. I am going to try multiple coats and see how that goes!

I haven't posted on this thread for AGES, but things ain't stopped ;)   Since posting last I have new wheels, have pretty much resprayed the car again and have generally been sorting little bits out around it.  I bought another mk2 for all the parts mine needed.
But after being away from my old Mk2 Vr I took the plunge and bought another donor... that takes the golf count up to 9

As of yesterday I now ave a week off    Which is designated to getting the car finished, If its not done I cant get to work.
I have spent a lot of time making sure I have absolutely everything covered, and think I am there!
I am going down the hydro clutch route so I got hold of an early corrado pedal box (reluctantly considering what people are asking for them nowadays) and corrado front crossmember.  I am sticking with the mk2 clocks as the mk3 ones never fit right and the mk2 ones look way better anyway.
I broke a Mk2 16v earlier this year and I nabbed the brakes and PS rack from that. The calipers were knackered though so I am getting exhange units next week.
Managed a slow two hours on the car this evening and besides the exhaust the 8v is ready to come out, but hey taking stuff apart is easy right?!  Any way ere:

I am well ahead of my schedule on the car, I wasn't expecting to have the old engine yesterday let alone have the vr in there!

I changed the pedal box yesterday morning and drilled the bulkhead for the clutch master... that is not a job I would want to do again soon  also ran the loom into the bay and sorted a few other bits.
So today, I will be plumbing everything in and sorting the wiring:
